How to Make Filipino-style Beef Picadillo
✅Ingredients
1 tablespoon canola oil
1 onion, peeled and chopped
2 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
1 1/2 pounds ground beef
1 tablespoon fish sauce
1 cup tomato sauce
1/2 cup crushed tomatoes
1/2 cup water or beef broth
2 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed
2 medium carrots, peeled and cubed
2 tablespoons raisins
salt and pepper to taste
✅Instructions
In a pan over medium heat, heat oil. Add onions and garlic and cook until limp.
Add ground beef and cook, breaking to pieces with the back of a spoon, until lightly browned. Drain excess fat, if any.
Add fish sauce and cook for about 1 to 2 minutes.
Add tomato sauce and crushed tomatoes.
Add water and bring to a boil. Lower heat, cover, and cook for about 10 to 15 minutes or until beef is cooked through.
Add potatoes, carrots, raisins. Cover and continue to simmer for about 3 to 5 minutes or until tender.
Continue to cook until sauce is reduced and thickened. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

This is one of my favorite Filipino dishes and so easy to make. A balanced meal even without the rice. There are Mexican, Cuban and Puerto Rican versions of this dish. The addition of raisins and olives gives the dish a fantastic contrast of flavors. Sweet, tangy, salty! It's like Menudo or Caldareta but much quicker and easier to make.

Compare to the Thai dish Pad Kaprao. The cuisine of the Philippines is world class! The flavor profile is excellent and it is frugal and so delicious with rice.

Only time I've had this is when by ex-wife's grandma made it and it was so good. This version looks about as close as I've seen to what she made so I'm keeping this recipe. I think when I make this I'll also use the white/green raisins along with some really good jasmin rice. Can't remember now which brand we got at the filipino store, it was either the "dragon" brand or the "elephant" brand lol.
