You can put a wood beam or similar on the pushing part. That way it start cutting sooner.

Looks a clean low hour machine, judging by the almost intact paint on the splitting wedge I'd say she hadn't seen 15 hours use never mind 150. Using the correct mineral oil was the right approach, have had issues with plastic parts and seals swelling using ATF where it shouldn't be used. Putting it to work to finish off the awkward, difficult to split bits sounds a plan 🙂👍

You need to sharpen the splitting wedge. It's dull and that's why the wood shoots off whenit splits. If you had a nice sharp edge, it would split much smoother.

A good load. Free is best. I split the vast majority of it by hand. Then I saw that splitter at a scrap yard. It makes lighter work and I can see why you use the saw now. More oil is the plan. I was hoping I could get two goes out of the bottle

@@bootsowen Yes using an axe is about stress and double handing. I have filled one of these splitters with used ATF in the past, cheers

Hi, looks good and like you, I'd only use it for knots. The pace of common mechanical splitters is too slow for me. Not patient enough. I'm interested in getting one of @BuckinBillyRaySmith 's wood bullets. I second Andy's comment in double handling the logs is a right pain. Keep up the good work!

This one moves fast enough. It seems to have a leak somewhere though. so maybe that was why there wasn't enough oil. further investigation required!

Chopping wood by hand might be quicker but more work for the body, slow and steady.

It’s a trade off. I like splitting with an axe. But I dislike knots. So I’m hoping that I can make a first pass with the axe and then identify the difficult stuff and use the hydraulic splitter on it.
