Thanks for the BROLL education. Here are my notes for others to copy: 1. WHERE: A wide shot - WHERE it’s happening 2. WHAT: A closeup on the hands of a subject - showing WHAT is happening 3. WHO: A closeup on the face of a subject - showing WHO‘s doing it 4. LINK: An over the shoulder shot (OTS) - linking together the previous three concepts 5. CONTEXT: Alternate shot An unusual, or side/low shot - providing story-specific context

This is great because a lot of times people don't EXPLAIN how to get B-roll. They say, "oh, 120FPS go out and film". It is like WTF no, SO much more goes into it than just walking around at 120 fps. A lot of times we watch movies and we realize it looks good but not WHY it looks good. We don't know what to look for to understand why. Thanks for not just showing different shots, but explaining them and how they are used.
@NicksFort6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the thoughtful comment. I think having a good foundation is important, especially for b-roll. The filmmakers that I look up to aren't whipping around in 120 all day. They are thoughtful in there coverage and story driven. B-roll can be really cool but it's more important for it to serve it's purpose first...then once you can combine the two...well you're making cinematic work!

Besides absolutely "spot on" information, you've taken the time to actually incorporate such footage properly into your tutorial to tell a very good story. Most lit and straight to the point video, no bs. Just upgraded my a7rii to a7riii, and got the same 16-35mm lens, is that a good lens to film with? I’m 95% photography but wants to get into a bit of filming, advice?
@NicksFort5 жыл бұрын
right on Tuan! yeah I have the 16-35mm f4 and I use that often for filming. Almost all lens for photo on the sony are good for video depending on the shot. Macros are tricky, but if you want to learn the macros trick I made a vid about that also: kzbin.info/www/bejne/imPIgY19arB6i5I

I opened up youtube this morning with the thought of ‘I still have no idea how I’m gonna film B-Roll’ and you’ve REALLY transformed my understanding. I’m going on my 1st trip that I will be filming for my youtube channel on Friday and seriously needed to understand more of how I can capture some effective B-Roll. I too loved Peter McKinnon’s video on B-Roll, but this really was just as good an educational experience for me, if not better. Thank you so much!

Well I hope the trip went well and the broll came out good?

Nick, thanks a ton for your vid ! Just got my Dji spark and I’m trying to learn how to tell my stories from the air.... I was researching the Dji hand gimbal (I think I need one) when I somehow came across your very enlightening tutorial... I plan to definitely use this outline to make my first story.... Didn’t really know how I was going to get it done. Thanks

Awesome Thomas! If you have the handheld gimbal and the spark you can get a lot of content with those two tools! Happy to have you at NicksFort and hope the filming goes well!

Yeah you know it's funny, just making this tutorial really reinforced these ideas into my shooting style. It's easy to get caught up in a trend and be tempted to skip the basics. But getting those five shots is huge!
@ArvinConcepcion6 жыл бұрын
NicksFort Yeah thats why its more better to stick to the basics, trends can die but the basics have been around for the longest time.
