Lily is just here spilling the tea - the disgusting, chai sugar sweetened, tea. I go to a school that's big for film and the preforming arts and even though I'm an english major I deal with these people all the time! It's so annoying because film boys are required to take an upper level english class and they think it's going to be easy, but then they complain about having to read stories they aren't "interested" in (Think Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, really anything by a female author). Every so often I want to point out that literally none of us are interested in seeing their film which consists mostly of a girl in her underwear who despite being in every scene doesn't have any lines.

The real irony is, I'm a bit of a film boy (if I was a film student and not a music one lel) and honestly trying to appreciate a variety of different media that might not have been intended for my demographic or taste is pretty challenging in a very film boy kinda way. Like, I don't think there's anything more avant-garde and edgy than watching Steven Universe and TRYING to like it, and then confronting yourself with the reasons you might be inclined not to like it while forging ahead with the reasons it's objectively good. That should be what wanky art people are all about if they really want to art wank as hard as possible
@alicemartin32753 жыл бұрын
You made me laugh. 😂 Good intent is already the first step out of it. I feel like what helped me out of a ladder-grading mindset is realizing a film can be many thing, not necessarily an perfect artistic representation of the human condition. That's caricatural but that's the idea. Films don't all have the same intent, the same goal... And even when they suck, you can still like them for whatever hidden reason. I don't know if that'll help you, but hey, I wasn't so carefree about art a few years ago.

The whole film bro debate has always struck me as people lashing out against those who shame others for their media choices, by shaming others for their media choices. Not even saying that the idea of the film bro isn’t real, but I think that these debates have just gone on to make people feel bad for liking certain media on both sides of isle. A cyclical cycle of toxic discourse and pretentious minimizing of others interest. I really couldn’t imagine hating on either side for what they watch since we all just enjoy what we enjoy. The only bad actors are those that disparage people for what they like or assume that what they are consuming is above any other form of media consumption. I feel that the need to dismiss the people that like certain movies as film bro comes from an equally viscous impulse that drove that asshole boy to turn away when steven universe was mentioned. Just two sides of the same coin.

At first, it was really intimidating, because there were boys who knew how to use industry-standard software and equipment and who had actually been on a film set, yada yada yada. But, when we would sit in class and talk about points and stuff, I could see how close-minded they were and how little they actually knew. There's one guy on my course that said that he hates TV because TV makes you dumb???? Dude, our course is called "Film and TV" also, have you actually watched TV???? It's good, pal! In my humble opinion, I think this idea that you need to see your idealized self represented in media is not a good way to validate yourself & probably does more harm than good. I think ones behavior is something that can be influenced by priming & repetitive consumption of media will certainly do that. If someone isn't confident in themselves internally, then looking for external validation seems like a great way to incorporate traits that run counter to their ultimate well being. We learn through repetition & conditioning which is always happening. If you're looking for validation, you're going to find it & it very well might come w strings attached.

This comment was really intended for general discussion purposes. I feel that we live in a time where there are manipulative forces attempting to sway individuals one way or another, and the easiest mark is a person questioning any part of their internal ideal of themselves. I dont think people are the sum of their actions. I'm a person who happens to be blah, blah, blah is more the case than I'm a straight, white, incredibly handsome & articulate male with a huge well that's irrelevant my point is I'm a human who has done actions& those actions do not define me they describe what I've done. Anywho, thanks for approaching my comment in good faith. That is a rare thing in this crazy, crazy world!

Man, this shit makes me realize I have the film taste of a "film boy" (although I don't think I'm "correct", or even knowledgeable about media). I don't know if I should force myself to stop having that opinion, or if that even worse than just being aware of it... This is a real conundrum. I'd honestly like to hear what would be least annoying from an outside perspective
@thesocialisthedgehog6320 Жыл бұрын
I don't think there's anything wrong with having these tastes (liking the movies of Wes Anderson, Tarantino, etc.) it only becomes annoying or problematic if you were to try to put down any other directors or styles (particularly feminine and queer perspectives). Closemindedness is what separates a "film boy" from casual fans of the aforementioned directors.
@maewillow56808 жыл бұрын
I have similar experience on my uni. Not with film boys, bc I study music production, so... music boys?? But it works the same - half of my group thinks know everything about music, listen only to old or indie or rock - "true" music (they really call it like that). I have never been in music studio before uni and they act like EVERYBODY know how to use professional software. And mass media? Popular music? My friend calls it "cancer of culture". And I'm the only person on course who cares about charts etc. That's really annoying bc, well, mass culture is often stupid, but can be really enjoyable!

Tarantino is among the best modern mainstream Hollywood directors (although I grew tired of him after Django cause everything after that felt like more of the same to me), but, like, you aren't supposed to stop there. It's skillful, but his stuff is easily digestible pop entertainment. There is more gripping dialog, there are more intriguing characters, there is better action, there is more intense tension, there is more hard hitting shock, there is tighter writing, there is deeper engagement with themes, there is more fun to be had and there's less "Hello, I'm Roman Polanski, I'm your friendly neighbor and a filmmaker and there's nothing else notable about me. Thanks for saving my wife, wanna have a beer with me?" Seriously, why does no one talk about how Quentin casually put that pedo fuck in Once Upon a Time without doing anything with him or ar least acknowledging what he did? You just don't put someone like that in your feel good ending
@tvsonicserbia5140 Жыл бұрын
Which movies would you point to as being better in the things you mentioned? I'm geniuenly curious. I'd agree with almost all of propositions you wrote, but I still think the very fact you wrote all of those things points to a very unique quality of Tarantino. He tries to embody all of the things he finds important in cinema, almost always within a single film. His cinephilia and knowledge of cinema history is almost unparalleled. The entire history of cinema becomes pretty much palpable when watching his films. The more you learn the more satisfying they become. That's why I think he is so appealing to film students, not just because its funny and witty and shocking. Yes they are very entertaining (well I find Hateful 8, Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction extremely boring entertainment wise, but generally speaking), but I don't see how that makes it easily digestible or shallow.
@doingitwelldotbiz Жыл бұрын
@@tvsonicserbia5140 kinda telling that you breezed past the point about Polanski in order to wax poetic about a so so director. Feel as strongly as you wish about Quentin, but please be aware when you are missing an important point in a critique. I’m not going to disagree about the reasons you have for enjoying his work. Taste is subjective and sublimity is a myth. But, part of the overall problem stated in the video, is that film boys will defend their own, regardless of who else is hurt by their lack of scruples or inclusion in the argument. Like what you like, but be aware that ethics in an industry are very telling of who is being prioritized by it. If you are going to be vocal, six years later, about defending a director who is exceptionally problematic to a loooot of marginalized groups, please expect to engage on that topic. Ignoring it is an exact representation of the problem. You like movies more than you respect the real lives that are affected by influential media. If that’s true, that’s true. But be aware that it’s true and don’t rebut an argument unless you are willing to engage with the entirety of its substance. If that’s not what’s true about you, be aware that many folks will read it as such. No one with that much clout needs to be defended. No one with that much influence will ever know you opened your mouth to offer respects to their legacy. It might make you feel better about being challenged on why certain people are not objectively great. To me, arguments like this make me feel like shit. My existence is justified and invalidated, largely, in the court of public opinion and I don’t have any patience for those who are so hurt that all folks don’t universally worship academic ability. Cultural competence and human empathy are my minimum standards for enjoying media. I won’t die if I don’t consume problematic media. It is a luxurious old privilege to feel that defending a cis het white man with more money than either of us will ever encounter is a worthwhile use of your time and efforts. Particularly when your main point is how many films he knows. Who wrote all those films? Are his movies largely circlejerks to the lasting legacy of patriarchal hegemonic structures promoting the work of just a few people who happen to all have light skin and a cock in their pants? I’d say so. I doubt you’d ever be bold enough to cop to that. Grow up and learn how to value witnessing other people’s perspectives, please.

I think I have been something of a film boy. It's easy to hold up the thing that appeals to your demographic most and see it as the "masterpiece" and the "definitive work". Maybe I'm simply self satisfied with the notion of seeing white men, who I can easily project myself onto, reflected back at me on the screen. I sometimes desire to be that guy. My excuse about lack of representation in their films is that the ideas being expressed may not be exclusive to simply WHAT the characters are, the labels that define them, but WHO the characters are, in their actions and approach to life. I don't know if that's cope or not but I always figured, of a woman who relates to the character of Leonard in Memento, why could she not see herself in him? That Leonard's relatability is gate-kept by the bounds of gender? Personally, I liked to see myself as the character of Jyn Erso in Rogue One, in her frankness and capacity for optimism in the bleak circumstance. Obviously, I don't think I should reject identification with her just because we aren't in the same gendered box. That characters on screen are meant to represent anyone as part of a monolithic social category annoys me.
