Fun fact: This episode was originally written to have a Sawyer-centric flashback. It was rewritten at the eleventh hour after Harold Perrineau (rightfully) criticized the script for centering Sawyer even though the drama of the raft story clearly belonged to Michael and Walt. As a result, Perrineau had much, much less time to prepare for his flashback scenes than would normally be available for a cast member preparing for their character-centric episode(s). To me, this makes Harold Perrineau's performance even more impressive; he really knocks it out of the park here. Even though this episode seems to always land pretty low in people's overall rankings, I've always appreciated it for Michael's emotional flashback-no matter how many times I see this episode, those flashback scenes always hit me right in the feels. (It's also fun to rewatch this knowing that it was hastily rewritten. You can really see how some of the present-day stuff is designed to segue into Sawyer flashbacks. For example, Michael saying, "You have no idea what it's like to care for somebody else..." The camera drifts away from Michael and to Sawyer and you can almost hear the flashback "whoosh" taking you away. Then they cut back to a previously used angle of Michael, creating a more natural transition to his flashback using editing alone.)

This was probably the most difficult episode for me to watch, as it somewhat paralleled my experience as a dad. My wife (at the time), son, and I were living in California. My wife and son went on a "vacation" to Florida, when I found out she was visiting her new boyfriend there. They drove from Florida back to California in his truck, so she could move all her and my son's stuff to his house. Whilst they were packing, my wife sent my son to Oregon to be with his grandparents. I had to quickly get a lawyer, that I couldn't afford, and file in court to bring my son back to California. Ultimately the judge allowed her to move to Florida with my son, and I only had him during the summer and for holidays. There are a hundred other crazy stories about the divorce, such as my ex and her new husband deciding to move to Missouri and join an Amish community. She *literally* became Amish lol. Eventually the Amish kicked them out of their community though 😉 She ended up divorcing that guy too and is with a third guy. I just feel bad for him LOL

IMO, Susan had a good case for custody, but a poor one for terminating Michael's parental rights. Generally, parental rights can be terminated involuntarily only if the court finds the parent to be unfit. That would be something like severe alcoholism or drug addiction, or criminality, not just having been excluded from the child's life. And in most cases a custodial parent wouldn't be allowed to take a child to another country against the wishes of the other parent. Just as Susan said, I think Michael would have won the case. But she talked him into signing the papers. Sad. Harold Perrineau, who played Michael, has said he had problems with Michael's story because he felt it played on the stereotype of the absent black father. In rewatching the series, I can't say I agree. Michael tried over and over to be part of Walt's life. That Walt kept being taken from him was not his fault.
@theshadowfax239Ай бұрын

Stayed up late and finally got to watch an upload right after it posted! My main problem with Susan was that she didn’t even allow a world where she did her thing and took Walt, but let Michael still have a place in his life. The letters being hidden, no phone calls, nothing. That’s where she crossed the line for me. In a show already filled with daddy issues, Michael tried to not let that happen for Walt in the beginning. Can’t wait for the next one!
@riel4553Ай бұрын
I think I understand Susan's POV but keeping Walt apart from his bio dad and grandmother was a mistake: obviously she didn't plan on dying but life happens and it seems like she had no other family or backup, so when she died Walt was left completely alone.
@ShadowDogProductionАй бұрын
You say Michael would lose in court but the point you made earlier is why he'd win. She doesn't HAVE to go to Rome to provide for Walt. She can do that in the states. And Michael isn't suing for sole custody, he's just trying to keep her from leaving the country. He would probably win THAT narrow goal.

So you want to know how obsessive Lost fans are? After Episode 1 of this season, we spent a lot of time debating who's shoes those were that Jack saw. It was a huge mystery and the majority of fans, myself included, said that the shoes were too small to be John's. In the forums we compared the shoes in the episode to other screenshots of Kate and Locke's feet. This is how we spent our time between eoisodes. Analyzing the smallest detail. And Locke took off his shoes to be stealthy. And I'm surprised you didn't pick up on the Easter Egg regarding the number 108. It's not significant or a spoiler. Just something to ponder and maybe you'll figure it out. Lastly, Jin was saying, "Udders!" not "Others!".

Susan is not saying that Michael can win custody she's saying that he can prevent her for leaving. So she loses a better-paying job, Michael would be broke, etc. etc. When Michael stopped fighting for Walt then, he was sure that at least Walt would be safe and well-taken care of, Things changed and now Walt has lost everything. Once again, for the greater good Michael should've left Walt at the island but because of their history he didn't want to be separated from him. And now this happens.
@letsrock1729Ай бұрын
No half-decent parent would leave their 10 year old on an island in the middle of nowhere with a bunch of strangers. Michael taking Walt on the raft has nothing to do with their history. As a parent, wherever you go, your child goes with you...that's just automatic.
@riel4553Ай бұрын
@@letsrock1729 Lots of parents IRL leave their kids on land instead of taking them on a raft across the ocean, and then arrange things so they can be safely reunited. On the other hand, lots of parents do take them; don't know if you're old enough to remember Elián G's case: he was taken without his father's consent by his mother from Cuba to the US. She died along with 10 other people. Elián made it to the US but was too young for assylum so he was returned to his father.
@letsrock1729Ай бұрын
@@riel4553 Well, it's not something I could ever have done (because however bad things are, it could very easily be FAR worse for your child without you being there to protect them), but true. However, it's a bit different leaving your child with (presumably) relatives/close friends, which Michael wouldn't be doing if he left Walt on the island. Also, it's one thing to leave your child somewhere temporarily if you actually know where 'somewhere' is....but it would be insane to leave your child in a place you didn't know if you would ever be able to find again. I'm sure I'm old enough (I'm in my 50s) but I'm from the UK, so that case was never on my radar.
@riel4553Ай бұрын
@@letsrock1729 I'm on the USA side of the pond so there are a lot of raft stories on my radar, and of course the fatal ones are the ones on the news. When LOST presented the raft storyline I kept thinking 'do they really want to take Walt? What if he ends up alone like Elián? At least that raft was on a known route and not so far from land'. Elián's story must've been on the writer's mind. His mother took him away from his father bc she thought it was the best for him; she died and Elián's father had to become Michael before Michael with half the world telling him to just give up his son and let him stay in the US with strangers.

@@riel4553 Oh my god, this is absolutely tragic. That poor child and his father. It's very possible that I didn't know about this because I've always tried to avoid the news as much as I can for my own mental health. I end up feeling devastated for people I've never met and not being able to get their tragedies out of my head for ages, which isn't helpful for me or anyone else. In terms of the show, if I'd been in Michael's shoes, I would have stayed on the island with my child and let other people go to find rescue. The raft never seemed like a safe plan at all...a tiny vessel like that on a vast depthless ocean is the stuff of nightmares for me.

Honestly, the older I get the worse I feel for Michael. And Harold Perrineau as well. He's such a phenomenal and, imo underrated, actor and he had to fight tooth and nail to get this episode from his point of view showing Michael actively wanting his son back. I forget who this episode was originally supposed to be focused on, but I do remember Harold being pissed about Michael being written like a stereotypical "black dad" who seemingly doesn't give a shit about his kid. Basically whenever we see a scene that shows how good and caring of a father Michael is, it's because Harold fought for it. It's that kind of behind the scenes information that I found out after the fact that make me resent people like Carlton Cuse and appreciate the actors so much more. Without the actors investing themselves in their characters and fighting for them, there are several of our most beloved characters that would have ended up being carbon copy stereotypes of whatever race and background their portraying for the sake of appearing diverse. The performances we got added depth and made that diversity mean something more than a bunch of white guys trying to pretend to be inclusive in the writing room.
@mikemoringАй бұрын
It was originally written to be a Sawyer episode before Harold (rightfully) criticized that decision. It's a minor miracle that they took his criticism to heart-especially considering what we've learned in the intervening years about the unfortunate toxic atmosphere in the Lost writers' room-and the show (certainly this episode) is much better for it. Damon has frequently stated that one of his single biggest regrets about his Lost experience was how under-used and mistreated Harold Perrineau was. It's nice to see that the two of them seem to have buried the hatchet (they appear to have a very amicable relationship on social media, always showing mutual support and singing each others' praises), but I'll always wonder what could've been if they'd truly harnessed the potential Perrineau brought to the table. (And I say this as somebody whose all-time favourite show is Lost.)
@screamr2d2Ай бұрын
@@mikemoring Exactly, that's what I was alluding to about the writers and Darlton. I was pretty sure it was Sawyer who was supposed to central that episode, but I wasn't a hundo and didn't want to spit false facts. You are absolutely right, it was a minor miracle and I gotta say that since I learned of the struggle I appreciate Michael a lot more.
@screamr2d2Ай бұрын
@@mikemoring And yeah my take is that Damon isn't a bad guy and probably didn't realize how bad it was, but definitely owned up to not doing anything to make things better. Carlton Cuse is another story. The things I read about him made me feel physically ill.
@mikemoringАй бұрын
@@screamr2d2 I think you've hit the nail on the head. It's pretty well publicized that Damon was in way over his head when Lost began-he was barely 30 and suddenly found himself at the helm of a massive, global phenomenon. He had no real leadership experience. He admits that he actually spiralled into utter despair in the early days of the show and basically demanded to have Carlton brought on to help him get things under control and act as a mentor. The irony, of course, is that Carlton-though experienced and ready to crack the whip and play the "strict parent" role to keep things under control-brought a lot of antiquated ideas about leadership with him. And Damon, who had longed for somebody to take on that role and provide the support that Cuse provided, felt-in my estimation, anyway-powerless to intervene when it came to the... less-savoury aspects of Carlton's approach. I still adore Lost, blemishes and all. It's my absolute favourite show in spite of the unpleasantness that some people reportedly experienced behind the scenes. And I still get a kick out of Carlton and Damon's hijinx-I just recently listened to a 20th anniversary interview with Cuse and he came off as delightful and charming and funny as I remember from the Official Podcast days. It's just a shame to know that it was such a painful experience for some people. And it's always unfortunate to learn that somebody you otherwise like is/was so capable of the kind of carelessness that causes distress for others. I have to remember that Lost walked so so many others could run-in so many different ways. And I think the same is true of Damon's time in the writers room on Lost. You can tell that he has made a conscious effort to recognize his past failures and is dedicated to shaping more positive experiences in his creative collaborations. The Leftovers was a huge step forward (and an utter masterpiece) and Watchmen (for which he hilariously replaces Carlton with a newer model) is yet another leap forward in that regard.

@@mikemoring Yes I agree one hundred percent. My stomach may have dropped when I first heard of all this, and I'll admit I was thoroughly depressed for a few days, but I still live and breathe this show and consider it a success story, BECAUSE it's a rare case where people did actually learn from their mistakes, not to mention the actors loved their characters so well that they stayed and fought for them, and in some cases won. Nothing could diminish my love for this show. Especially knowing how it has effected so many people in the most positive ways. I just don't credit the same people I used to for that. Hell, I used to be so misinformed that I actually thought JJ Abrams was the one responsible for its brilliance! It's embarrassing to admit, but I first watched all six seasons on DVD the year it ENDED, binged in about a month by myself basically in a cave with no outside influence. The only thing I knew at the time was "it's a JJ Abrams production! You gotta watch it!" And I did and it literally saved my life. I'm just happy I'm more informed now.

He also worked to try to save his relationship and salvage that before Susan ran off with Brian. Susan could have provided a life for Walt WITHOUT cutting Mike out completely and utterly. It's one thing to feel like her son would be best off moving with them, it's a TOTALLY different thing manipulating a man to adopt him and force Mike to give up his PARENTAL RIGHTS, especially when he clearly loves Walt and wanted to be a father. Episode 2 was originally going to be a Sawyer flashback episode, they went as far as filmed it but realized after filming that either the Sawyer flashbacks didn't work or (most likely) that it didn't make sense for the episode to be centered on anyone but Michael. The deleted Sawyer flashbacks never appeared in the show in any way and what it was rumored to be about never actually became a plot line.
@jeffwontshutupАй бұрын
If you listen to the Lost rewatch podcast, The Storm, as well as other sources, you learn that a portion of the discarded Sawyer plot was used for a later Sawyer flashback but with different actors because the actors they used the first time were no longer available. It was supposed to be the story of a con he mentioned aloud in season 1, but when they do eventually recycle it, it's rewritten to fit the Island arc of episode it was finally used in (and no I won't spoil which episode until Elie gets there). But in this episode if you watch closely you can see how some of the flashback cutaways look like they should be on Sawyer but then the camera flips back to a quick shot of Michael to accommodate the rewrite.
