The Falcons play a 3-4 defense. Newton isn't a 3-4 DT. They wanted O cause he can play DE/OLB and DT. Morris actually said that out his mouth. He wanted a guy who added speed physicality, explosiveness, and athleticism that could play up and down the line and stand up.

He was being held in the 2nd to last play. Falcons have put a premium on arm length this year. Plus they ran a lot of stunts in LA.

Dude you just a talking head or do you do research. The coaching staff did a study and they focus on guys with longer arms and also they only take players with a certain makeup. You will notice the guys they draft love football and live in the gym. Falcons also do an extensive background check to look for the profile they will accept. so did you see the background checks, medicals ? Did you measure the arms? Did you do 1 on 1 interviews to see if players were a character fit? We would not need scouts if all you had to do was pick the guy that had the most production!!!

this excerpt from an ESPN article should answer your question on why Ruke over Newton: "Raheem Morris and Jeff Ulbrich put their heads together a few years ago when both were coaching with the Atlanta Falcons. They did an offseason study on which physical traits were most effective for NFL defenders. The attribute that kept popping up? It wasn't speed or height or anything having to do with bench-press reps. It was length. Or, more simply, how long a player's arms are -- his wingspan. That seems like a more advantageous characteristic for basketball. But it can be a gamechanger in football, too, especially on the defensive side of the ball, Morris said."

Newton had surgery for a partial Jones fracture of his right foot in January. A checkup determined that he has a similar issue with his left foot as well. So that is why he was passed up by the Falcons.
