She confronted her” demons “ and is leaving the house and getting help because she finally realized that you cant fight these kinds of demons all alone. She told us all that she’ll help us fight our own demons. She reminded us that we aren’t alone and to always keep fighting. The video brought a lot of tired fighters to tears of happiness and relief. Either way, there is much more to this than the surface level reading.

I just realized the veiled lady being able to physically hurt Mary is a metaphor for self harm due to worsening depression. This series has so many layers and is such a jaw dropping representation of mental health issues. can we talk about how this is one of a very few pieces of horror media that doesn't demonize mental illness? often, the monsters are the ones that we would say as having mental illness and they're scary because they exhibit those behaviors. but here, they're just personifications of something horrible, the monsters are what these issues can do to the person who has to live with them, as opposed to the person being the monster, if that makes sense. it's refreshing.

I've been interested in this series for a while, but considering my own mental health issues I've been avoiding it like the plague. Don't be confused, I am getting the help I need and doing much better, but its still clearly an incredibly fragile balance of self care and medication. So thank you MatPat, for giving me a look into this fascinating series that I can safely digest without getting too attacked by my own demons. It might seem silly but this really does mean a lot to me. Seeing myself and my struggles represented in a way that accurately depicts how they feel helps me feel like I'm not crazy, just sick. Understanding this and seeing it in forms of media where my illness isn't just an unstoppable destructive force of insanity with no way out, but something that can be managed and addressed really does help. Even if I have to see it through cultural osmosis instead of being able to experience it for myself.

I just realized that I had been turning to drugs to escape my own fears and mental illness. I only stopped now, because an injury has made me need to take medication that would react badly with the drugs. This story scares me so much, because I'm Mary Mary. At first it was every once in a while, and was literally an accident. Just a little too much, and I found myself in the garden. Then every weekend, then every day for months on end. There's no real help for my issues, but maybe I can get help for my anxieties that are caused by my issues. I don't know what else to say. Thank you.

I actually talked to "k.", the creator and star of hiimmarymary, to ask her for advice on how to make my own series that's similar in tone and style to this, and she told me to make the symbolism obvious, but to make the story and monsters unpredictable. I'm basically confirming MatPat's theory. It was such an honor to speak with her via email, and I've been planning my own series in a similar tone for years now.

The current idea is to make it an anthology series where each monster represents mental health struggles and the series would be called "Harmless Horrors" since while mental health can harm you if you let it and is scary no matter what, if you know how to manage it successfully, it's more harmless than harmful (at least in my experience).

Secondary note: Mary mentions the house is her parents', which could (theoretically) either mean that -her mental health issues stem from some type of trauma related to her parents and/or that house, so her mind traps her there due to the bad memories or -she felt safest/happiest when she lived in or visited that house, so her mind places her there to give familiar surroundings during all of this or to taint the memories and make her feel more alone because her parents are never home

@@justaweeb9883 I mentioned on another video, I don't think the day/night cycle is meant to be *literal* day/night. I think it's meant to represent her feelings. It's day time when she feels okay or happy and night time when she feels upset. She mentions that it's always day in the garden early on, which wouldn't make sense realistically, *unless* taking into account the theory that the garden is where she goes when she's doing drugs, it could be day time if that means she feels good because that's what drugs do. Which also explains why, as her body gets used to them and she starts needing more than normal, the garden slowly gets darker, because the drugs are no longer giving her that same good feeling.

I had the impression the garden was representative of suicide. What's the most common outcome of severe untreated mental health issues, after all? 8:22 She's rubbing not her ARM, but her WRIST, where self harm is most often practiced (I don't think anyone inject drugs into their wrist, unless they're running out of veins. But I'm not an expert on this) Cutting, like a drug is a distraction from the pain. But it doesn't make things better, it only makes it worse over time. And the "regret" (I think of it as GUILT) grows because she knows it's wrong. Also, a lot of people say the house being her parents means she was abused by them, but I think since this is a COPY of the house where _Mary's_ demons live, it's possible that it's representing her mental health being a result of genetic predisposition. Like schizophrenia, depression can also be hereditary. I think this is supported by the ending, she yells "get out of _my_ house!". This may be a copy of her parents house, but it's also _hers._

im really annoyed how no one seems to pickup how well the entitiies match up with the 4 main jung arachetypes. The shadow, the anima/animus, The shadow, the self. In this case the darkness isnt an entity, just more of a "driving factor" for her mental issues. i.e. as the darkness gets more aggressive, the other parts tend to become more apparent. its a great nod to the basics of psychology and really got me hyped about this.

I feel like its a story about a girl who went through the aftermath of a loved one taking advantage of her in . Beauty represents the person telling how beautiful and perfect she is but she actually feels disgusting inside. The veiled woman represents how the girl feels society would treat her if they found out, all blaming her for what the person has done, viticm blaming. The Shadow represents the act itself.. Attacking her when she vulnerable and at night just like predators The darkness represents the feelings associated with dealing with the trauma The garden is symbolism to disassociating. I think that the fact that she appears to be living in a version of her parents house might be hinting to the idea of some kind of abuse from her parents. I think it could be verbal, saying that she isn’t good enough, which causes the existence of a monster like Beauty, but your reasoning about Regret in the previous episode makes me think that there was some kind of s**ual abuse involved with some other member of her family. I don’t know how that would play out, maybe it’s something completely different, we can’t be sure. I also think that the garden supports the idea of abuse from her family because literally getting out of the house would be a way for her to escape the hurt happening at home. It was probably when she was out of the house, avoiding the horrors in her home where she turned to drug use. The fact that she is safe from the monsters when she is in the garden could also represent how she is safe from any abuse when she isn’t in the house with her family. Edit: grammar

‘Depression’ hurting Mary physically after she comes back from the garden could be a representation of Mary hurting herself. This could also be Mary hurting herself mentally because like you said she keeps checking her arms and you see no injuries of any sort.
