The bonus irony is they managed to change so much about the characters and plot that they accidentally managed to actually make a completely new movie that people might have been interested in if they hadn't called it a remake.

I used to be associated with organized crime so much really doesn't offend me. But this Snow White situation has me a tad offended as a Caucasian male. If "they" cast a white male for a black role then the actor making negative remarks about the original film and women in general constantly, the pitch forks and torches would be out. Not to mention dwarves and mining stem from my knowledge to Lord of the Rings. What's wrong with it is beyond me. But what is wrong is what Disney and Rachael Ziggyziggler are doing and saying.

I'm glad he mentioned the fact that Disney puts so many of their movies on streaming and how that doesn't make them money. So many people don't seem to understand that. You're not gonna recuperate the costs without a theatrical run or even physical media sales. Between the bloated budgets and straight to streaming releases, they're spending more money than they're taking in. Disney has gotten so comfortable with their own success, they don't even care about the quality of their work anymore.

I don’t think the problem is with having messages or real life situations in film…. Because it’s always been in film, imo the problem is that studios have done a terrible job of seamlessly implementing themes & messages into the stories. Where it feels like pushing message has become more important than telling a good story.

The major difference between Netflix and Disney is Netflix spends a lot of money on different projects different genres and the don't over use an IP. Disney, on the other hand , makes 10 of the same movies and less on new IPs. The only thing Disney Plus has is Marvel and Star Wars and old nostalgia shows. Like Netflix tv shows or hate it, there is always something new to watch. A lot might be low budget, but it still works.

I dont have data to prove my theory but i think many people just are not going to the cinema anymore after Covid, and then just forget to watch it when it comes out on the internet. But mostly i think its due to rushing projects, really bad scripting and CGI just to put movies out there every 2 months is insane and people are tired of it. It's also the fact that wages have stagnated since the 1970s while the price of goods has continued to rise. My father use to make 5 bucks (minimum wage at the time) an hour in the 1970s and he could afford rent (living on his own), utilities, groceries, and he bought himself his first brand new car. Today minimum wage can maybe do one of those.... I said all that to say, people just don't have enough money to do extra fun things like go see a whole bunch of movies. They probably pick one that they've really been excited for every 3-6 months and then wait for the others to come out on streaming or rent on Amazon prime. And also once in a while something that's a 10/10 with crazy word of mouth might get them to go.
@MarcSpctr
@MarcSpctr 9 ай бұрын
Also, the series releasing an episode per week is the main cause. TV series are different from Web Series, stuff like GoT are TV series and can be released on weekly basis but minihseries need to be released all at once, but as they are not, people tend to think, let it release everything and then I will watch, but by then (after 2 months or 8 approx episodes), spoilers are everywhere on the internet, which spoils the fun. Releasing the series all at once is surely gonna fix most of the issue with streaming.

Another reason, as Friendly Space Ninja points out, is the over abundance of Blockbuster movies. Blockbuster movies used to be an event in the theaters, but nowadays we're getting 4-5 blockbuster films a month competing with each other. The audience cannot be expected to see all of those movies, they're only going to the one which looks the best out of all of them. So, the other blockbusters which people didn't go to see loses all of its money.

Main characters getting disillusioned with themselves is not the problem. The problem is deeper if you notice these are all the MALE main characters. The current production teams are too enamoured with the "Logan formula", which features a world-weary Wolverine who just wants to die in peace and how a FEMALE Wolverine is lined up to replace him. The problem is Wolverine wasn't sick with himself or the ideal he identifies with. The world crumbled around him and his healing factor was failing him as well as his adamantium was slowly poisoning him. Luke, Han and Ben were shown as cowards who abandoned their ideals with the first sign of failure (Anakin and Ben Solo falling to the dark side) which is counter to their characters in prior films. I would put forth the theory that feminists were taking their disdain for male movie stars a little too far by trying to make these characters take the knee and make the fans hate and abandon them.

To be fair on the animation side of business, a lot of lower budgets for animated films eithers mean the artists are underpaid or (at worst) overworked, even great films like ATSV have had really bad working conditions as a result, having that "reshoot" problem that you'd figure would be easily avoided in the animation medium.

I remember a time in 2000's when all the major studios were trying to push out superhero movies. You had Batman, Superman, Spider-man, X-men, and Disney had Sky High and Underdog. Yep. They were irrelevant. For the longest time, they were a smaller studio that played by their own rules. They had a niche. And it was largely kid-oriented movies. They didn't even release big budget PG-13 movies until Pirates of the Caribbean. And they survived then and still had money to buy Marvel, Lucasfilms, and Pixar. So, if things don't work out, they won't be #1 anymore, but they'll survive as a smaller studio. It's a bit drastic to declare their death, but them Theory videos are very click-baity.

This message pushing that Hollywood and Disney have done in the last decade is one of the main issues for me. I can handle a lecture, or social commentary if it's done well. But everyone is doing it - and not doing it well either. There is only so many times you can see the same thing being done, before you get bored with it. I am still baffled at the notion that they spend hundreds of millions on a movie, and not having a plan before shooting. But that is an issue they have had for a long time, especially around the time frozen came out. A lot has to change if they want to turn things around, some are doable. But one of the big issues is mind sets, and those are not easily changed.

Disney’s BIGGEST mistake is that it went to war with parents, the people who made their company. The Florida debacle where Disney decided to insert itself into politics and go to war with parents was the death blow. Every thing they did after that made people feel like they were operating in bad faith. Every message felt preachy and glib. They stopped listening to fans who paid for their stuff and started letting activists, who don’t give two hoots about profits OR pay for their products, make their decisions for them. Their innovation team HAS to be able to work in freedom from political pressure. You can’t innovate and take chances when you have 10 diversity coaches breathing down your neck, telling you “a woman should say that” or “that old guy needs to be taught a social lesson.” I know it’s cliche, but go woke, go broke. Guardians did well because it wasn’t woke. Thor did poorly because it tried to duplicate humor and it went too far. The Little Mermaid was beautiful but it was a pointless remake that didn’t need to be retold. Snow White is gonna be a massive failure, it doesn’t take a genius to see that coming…you hired a feminist millennial actress who hates the story to play Snow White. No one wants to see that.

I've seen film theorys' video on this a few times now and i'm still confused on how movie budgets work. If a movie makes double the budget back, shouldn't that mean it did well? Or is it that if it doesn't make over a billion dollars worldwide it's a flop? I'm so confused 😂😂
@48Hybrid70

It depends on what that budget actually entailed. Saying a movie took $300 million to make is one thing but they always leave out how much they spent to advertise it, which is also in the hundreds of millions. Like pointed out in the video, a $300 million dollar movie actually costed the studio somewhere in the $450-500 million range by the time it hits theaters. So it making $600 million really means it made $100-150 million. Not a good return on investment

What Disney needs too do is 1. Lower Disney+ Subscription Fees 2. Slow Down Film/Show Releases Both in How many films and shows are released every 1/4 but also drag the gap between episodes out to be bi-weekly instead of weekly 3. Promote Older Content, some of which no one has seen it was on air decades ago because it was never released to VHS or DVD 4. Charge for new Films that where just at the Cinema for at least 12 months after going too streaming even if it is only a 4 to 6 dollar rental fee for 48 to 72 hour period to watch 5. Use less CGI in Live Action films, I am not saying not too use any but use 50 to 70 percent less (Use more Practical Effects and Sets!), Also pay the CGI Teams more with more time to do the work! 6. Bring Shows and Films back down to earth more TMNT Film from the 90's and less TMNT from 2017 less Skybeams Aliens CGI again more Practical less CGI

I agree with MatPat's reasons and solutions but here are some other reasons for Disney movies failing in many people's opinions (especially Marvel): -> Actors attacking majority of audiences who pay to watch movies -> Destroying legacy characters in the name of diversity and inclusion -> Changing history of legacy fan-favorite characters to fit their agenda -> Differing from source material due to which the fan base even exists like comics or books with cheap tricks like race swap or gender bending -> Hiring nobody writers and directors to shoot high budget movies, intentionally attacking audiences through their movies or shows -> Preaching to audiences rather than entertaining with a fantasy -> Politicizing movies with subtle messaging and dialogue -> Not being a family-friendly movie for kids -> Movies outright telling majority of paying audiences to not go see the movies -> Audiences hating the past and views of actors in the movies -> Not listening to fans telling them what the y want to their faces and instead caving in to loud activists online to get a good D&I rating -> Fudging numbers to make it seem like what actually flopped had done well and vice versa due to political reason and pressure -> Censoring reviews and ratings that don't agree with what they want to promote -> Repeating the same trope of superhero films repeatedly -> Unlikable strong independent girl bosses who are born perfect but are just misunderstood by society and don't overcome any hardships or challenges to prove that they're deserving of their strength/powers -> Degrading male characters to lift the female leads up even higher -> Promoting certain characters to only a small portion of the audience based on race, ethnicity or gender while threatening or pressuring others to come watch them or they're deemed racist, sexist, misogynist, transphobic, etc. -> Over-saturating fans with an over abundance of shows and movies that force viewers to watch all of them to know what's happening in another show or movie -> Over-spending on movies that would do well with better scripts instead but they rely on CGI and special effects too much -> Underpaying writers, animators and CGI experts under heavy time restrictions to finish work that would take sometime double the time given -> Pandering to an audience base that doesn't case whether they succeed with an IP or not by paying to watch them or buying merchandise as long as their propaganda is put out -> Not knowing when to stop with sequels and instead make spinoffs or character adjacent separate film -> Poor writer, film design and story line, where they seem to forgot plot lines, powers, abilities, skills and devices explored previously by the end of the show/film

Bruh the one thing that KILLS me is ever since Disney Plus started is there are SO SO MANY shows that SHOULD HAVE been movies and some movies like Eternals where all I could think from a third to halfway on, was this dumb disjointed movie would have made an EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT TV show with just a couple of half decent writers....I mean you have a ensemble cast literally joined together through time and space and theyve done what theyre doing before...just so so many beautuful beautiful narrative themes could have been explored with that premise and the comics would do a lot of the work for a writer. Plus with a TV show each character can have a solo story and they could still have some overarching big story ideals that deal with religion, creation, and God. It just seems like they got their buckets confused or someone was trying to sabotage Disney with some of these choices.

Hey Jaby, great video! If you're looking for more story-driven game content, I recommend Telltale games. They are interactive games with choices that can alter the story. For a good game with smooth pacing, I recommend Batman: Telltale as it's an original Batman tale. If you are down with watching a mystery story with folklore characters I recommend Wolf Among Us. It centers around a spring of murders happening in the Fabletown where all the folklore characters in history live and the Big Bad Wolf is the detective. Give them a try, love the content.

Vfx/Cgi overuse is a crux in this topic. Films used to be full of people excellent in their craft. The last decade pushed filmmakers (and producers) into the "film first, fix later in post" mentality that balloons these already gargantuan budgets. Matte paintings, cyclospheres, stop motion, tricky editing, and other in-camera techniques are tools left in the dust. A shame. Filmmaking used to be just that. FilmMAKING. Now it's filmtinkering. And it's no surprise these execs are burning money left and right.

Ironman Incredible Hulk Avengers Black Panther 3x’s Infinity War Endgame No Way Home (left confused by decision and not impressed) Wakanda Forever (the best quality of Phase Not 4 Me and still disappointing) Many Disney+ projects skipped and a Loki walk out. I do have all the movies in 3D though and still haven’t watched the new ones.

9:25 EVERYTHING requires CGI and VFX, even using props is part of the CGI pipeline and they don't work well today with out VFX, in fact a lot of Animation and VFX studios encourage prop artists if possible, the problem is not VFX, its how its used. The problem is since VFX and CGI make a lot of things possible, they want to release more things faster, overworking and the pressure overly increase on the VFX artists and Animators, this create a more rushed project and lessens the quality. The biggest problem with Disney and Marvel was they made huge changes when everything was finalized with VFX and they push and rushed VFX to re do things that take months to make to a couple of weeks before release, therefor lessening the quality of the artists work, this usually leads to point the fault on VFX but its not us, but the direction and the big heads that control the production of the projects. Corporations don't listen to Animation Supervisors or VFX artist supervisors, we Animators always ask for more time to deliver a better quality but the corporations never listen to us and our warnings and just want to release the project faster. VFX and Animators don't have much of a saying sadly and we are thrown under the bus when things fail.

With all due respect to Film Theory, the films are done years in advance, sometimes half a decade. You can't space out things that take 2-5 years to make, you can't possible know what's good or what's bad ahead of time. The problem with Disney they are in the art making business. You're not a fast food chain, you're product has to actually connect with people. The bad thing about movies as as an art form is that it's a business; the bad thing about movies as a business is that it's an art form. Disney better stop making these remakes and take chances on talented artists who have stories that can connect with audiences.

I feel like people have a misconception about Disney that they NEED to make there money at the box office but they very obviously don’t you can look up Disney companies actual revenue and see there still making a profit. From my understanding most of there income comes from just owning a ton of IP and licensing stuff related to that IP. They don’t need to make a profit at the box office because they can sell toys and tickets to Disney land Halloween costumes and t shirts to make that money back and then some. Where Disney would actually be in trouble is if people just fully stopped liking there new IP. Which yeah ok things aren’t looking great on that front right now but I am sure they’ll figure it out.

With a budget of $300 million USD, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny would need to make at least $800 million USD just to break even, so it would need to make over $900 million USD in order to actually make a profit. Since when did an Indiana Jones movie bring in those numbers? If it didn't do it before, why did they think this one would do it, not to mention that Harrison Ford is 80 years old, for crying out loud, so it's hardly an Indiana Jones movie just because of that as well. That movie lost money the moment it went into production with that ridiculous budget. When writing a script, you have to keep the budget in mind. You can't just write ten locations into your script with no concern over how much that will cost.
