Star Wars: The Last Jedi quickly became one of the most polarizing movies of 2017. Critics loved it, but audiences HATED it. It's only natural to ask why this might be - who is to blame for this disparity? Well, Loyal Theorists, The Hollywood Reporter has an answer: They think it's ALL MY FAULT! And while this does sound ridiculous, it turns out they're right.

@@joemorton9200 You are mistaking fan enthusiasm for critic enthusiasm. The whole reason MatPat started on this theory in the first place was 'Why do critics love this movie and fans hate it?' This the opening of the video and the original question. That checklist of the 'Five points of Story', Characterization, Character growth, Plot, Setting, and Theme are exactly what the critics looked at (and maybe one or three for camera work and effectiveness of visuals/visual storytelling) but fans don't look for those in the same way. I didn't like the character that Fin traveled with (don't even remember her name lol), found some of the humor to be distracting, didn't like the lack of logic, and it just didn't feel like a sequel to The Force Awakens (That's not a horrible thing but imo it was just one of the flaws of THIS movie). People I know have acted shocked when I've pointed these things out as if I had hated the movie. They don't even let me point out things like how stunning the visuals and camera work is, or how interesting the camera work and editing are, or how beautiful the soundtrack is, or how much of a great character Kylo Ren is. This movie is in no way a bad movie. It was entertaining and charming. It wasn't a pure masterpiece, but it was a pretty great movie. But almost no one wants to have an actual conversation about it. If I start with the things I disliked about the movie, people cut me off and tell me that I'll just eat up anything I watch. If I start with the negative, people will defend the movie like it's their child.

Chapter 7,8 and 9 did nothing for me, they were made by extremely talented movie makers but they had no love for the story. They were made by greedy creators trying to use Star Wars as a vehicle for their own ill agendas... I dislike the malice behind Rian Johnson and Kathleen Kennedy & co. I'll say this much, my friends asked me to see this film the first week it was released. I only really saw a few trailers. I had a higher hope because Episode 7 did fairly well. To think theories, too much variety in the cast, too many new characters, or whatever the reason being the film was bad, seems narrow minded. It was just a bad film, not even just a bad Star Wars film. I can say this with a lot of confidence simply because I sat down through Episodes 1-3, and I only had an odd complaint here and there. The pacing was rushed at some points, stood still at others. Things seemed to be out of place, as if the direction they wanted to go in, stopped, then started and then repeated. The real nail in the coffin for me was every major development seemed to be there just to cause a reaction and not to further the story. I know this is just an individual option, but you just seem to tell that this is a Star Wars movie in name only, a testament to a fans image of the franchise rather then a honest continuation of a story millions love and have loved for decades.

Actually, Admiral Holdo never "planned" on doing that awesome lightspeed thing. It was only after she thought it was her last resort. Otherwise, why wouldn't the other ships do it as well before they were destroyed? It was a complete improvisation.
@ApMatZe
@ApMatZe 6 жыл бұрын
well fun fact: that "awesome lightspeed thing" would have also been a hyperspace thing which makes said move entirely impossible according to star wars lore be cause hyperspace just does not work that way it also makes no sense because if u could do something like that to destroy big starships why wouldnt u just build small fighters and autopilot them via hyperspace (ergo lightspeed) into big enemy ships?

"Let me make fun of a soldier for actually thinking about saving *the frickin crew* and just call him a hothead." "Let me not turn around and do the hyperspace thing and instead just watch as ships blow up one by one." And she's supposed to be a war hero before she takes command? Blue Grape Gaming that was a red herring, meant have us not question how Luke got to Krait before it's revealed that he's an astral projection. It's basically the opposite of checkovs gun. Really late to the party, but there is the Dunning-Kreuger Effect that does also come into place, in relation to the confidence to knowledge ratio, at the earlier stages that can come into play; but you generally go through enough material to counteract that early hump, thus, generally, eliminating the Dunning-Kreuger Effect.

You really made sense with what the MAIN problems in the film are. And those are the MANY MacGuffins in the movie. To use a MacGuffin wisely to throw off the audience and keep them guessing or for an introduction is great. Hitchcock used them, the intro of Raiders uses one well. But Last Jedi had soooo many throw away plot devices and build ups that you just stop caring. Examples: Luke's lightsaber Rey's parents Snoke's pupose/reason to exist Captain Phasma AGAIN Leia's swan song Holdo's character and motivations Finn/Rose storyline They ALL make you think they are important or relavent to the saga, and they are either tossed aside or are so pointless they just seem to be a waste of screen time. Now let me be CLEAR! I think Last Jedi is overall a GOOD movie. It is awesome with effects that won't be dated too quickly with actors who play their parts, whether I like them or not, well. Not to mention some epic action scenes. I watched the prequel trilogy and this is ahead of them all. It is great, except in some areas it's not so great. It allows for much more to come with episode 9...and no one is thinking it is going to ripoff the Return of the Jedi after this.

Spot on. You have to wonder about the agenda of this film's defenders when they keep trying to find scapegoats to bash for the hate surrounding it. It's particularly despicable when they lump together people who dislike this movie into neat - but wrong - little categories (like the alt-right) to fit their distorted worldview.

Being a DanganRonpa fanboy I thought it was sending a message that sometimes no matter what you do, you can't fight back, they always had that glimpse of hope, it being hidden a bit, things go right again, they have it just in their grasp, then it crashes and sacrifices must be made. I enjoy these story lines used in war movies. Example of this in the 8th Starwars movie is definitely the fin and rose story arc and the salt mine arc. (On my phone, will type it later)

Yes dude, the urge of fans to constantly speculate makes them want things to go in one direction. Nobody wants to be surprised at the movies anymore. TLJ did very unique things and strayed away from what was done before but did fans want that ? No ! The fans just want the watch the same thing over and over again. The force awakens followed almost the same template to the OG star wars and people loved it. But as soon as you deviate from the story and characters a bit you receive backlash. The reason critics like it is because they want to see something new. If you dont believe this another example is the alien franchise. As soon as Ridley Scott attempted a different vision with Prometheus, Alien fans were like this is a new and original story we don't want it. Give us the same thing over and over again with slight modifications. Thats why covenant suffered.

Cope. Andor is very different and amazing. It you want to sUbVeRt ExPeCtAtIoNs the writing has to be really good. You also have to have a decent understanding of the property to pull it off. Cobra Kai is a perfect example. Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg are massive Karate Kid fans. They love the property and dreamed about how world would evolve. If only Disney hired the equivalent people for Star Wars. Besides, TFA is trash too. I've been saying from the beginning that Rey is a Mary Sue.

My main problem with the movie was that it seemed to tease interesting risky stuff, only to take it back. "Oh my god, Leia just died!" Nevermind, she suddenly has has the force and didn't die in the explosion or vacuum of space. Or more importantly, how they spend two movies trying to show that Kylo has some light in him and Rey has some darkness in her. Then, at the climax of that arc, when the first order cruiser is in flaming pieces, snoke is dead, and the Rebel fleet is about to be destroyed, Kylo offers to let the past die out, so that they can start a new future. One without light and dark, without imperial or rebel. Something new, something to break the cycle of violence spanning like 8 movies. But then nah they fight over a lightsaber for 30 seconds and take it all back. Like, I enjoyed the movie over all, but it kinda felt like they were just saying "Nothing really had any consequence, the sith and jedi will continue to fight forever, because we like money."

1:34 well mattpat I only watched all the starwars movies in 2020 and I am surprised to say that the only thing that was spoiled to me is the “I am your father “ moment . How did that happen is simple. In my account I had never searched or watched anything related to film-production or clips or tv shows.

The whole disgust with the movie isn't solely based on theories. Its based on canon as well. Why are we to assume that "as Kylo gains more power his opposite in the light rises as well to bring balance" is good enough? This entire franchise prior to this was telling the audience that no matter how much potential power a force user has (even Anakin), THEY MUST HAVE TRAINING. Rey should not be able to defeat the Praetorian Guards (who are essentially cousin or brethren of the Emperor's Royal Red Guards) with little to no training. Astral Projection is a part of Star Wars canon but PHYSICAL projection is not (Luke kisses Leia's forehead and the projected dice can be picked up). Also, when you mislead the audience (playing Darth Plagueis theme song during Snoke in TFA) and tote Rey's parentage as important, you are going to piss off people. At least if Rey had a lineage to a famous force user, it would at least provide context and make the Praetorian Guard fight scene more plausible. They said in interviews Snoke is mysterious but he is not a Sith Phasma will have a bigger role in the next film But in the end they pulled the rug from under us and basically gave us a soft reboot. How is that acceptable? I understand that they chose an underlying metaphorical theme of "letting the past go, not everything will meet expectations, failure will become a factor in the path to success, rebirth etc" but I am still pissed because I understand what they are trying to accomplish, but still choose to wanting to see the other things they dismissed. I also understand that a lot of people who loved the movie most likely do so because everything that was setup or theorized seemed like a recycled cliche of the franchise and thus thought the perspective was fresh and not circular. I want circular. I want lore. I want Snoke to be some mysterious entity more dangerous than the Sith. I want Rey to be some reincarnation of the First Jedi and that the Jedi must end because their "religious" system has misguided their ways. I want Kylo to become an embodiment of a Grey Jedi by flip flopping between Snoke and Rey. Just give me anything related to actual lore for god sakes!

Jerry Blizzard again that proves his point you are left assuming that these things would be okay and that they are okay to contradict prior circumstances. That's the problem. Some are okay enough to let slide (astral projection I guess and the physical tangible connection of opposite users surroundings) but others just seem unredeemable.

Autonomic rey's parents are completely pointless to the story. The theme is complete and utter hopelessness. The new republic is incompetent and got It's head blown off, the resistance got cut down to a handful of people on an old freighter. Meanwhile the first order still has thousands of ships at its command. As far as I'm concerned they wrote themselves into a corner.

I'm actually writing a research paper about consistency in writing, although I'm focusing on mystery novels. To ease your sorrow about having your theories called garbage, I can tell you that theories are inescapable in writing. Your audience will always try to think ahead and construct with the pieces of information already available to them (and this applies to fanartists and writers who create stuff way before seeing a movie, too). Theories are just another way of audience and community engagement. To demand that your audience *doesn't* play with the toys you've set up is basically asking them to become braindead so that any illogical, cynical thing can be shown to them without much critique. Big corporations, I guess, don't like the fact that audiences are more than sacks of flesh that throw money at them. It' s also emotionally significant. If you imagine an awful theory, you cope much better with less ridiculous theories possibly becoming canon. To go back to consistency, in mystery writing, it's the most important thing, because a mystery novel must give the reader a chance to solve it on their own, and, as such, nothing must be hidden. If there's no consistency, there's no logic thread. Loose ends must be tied up, there has to be payoff for the things set up, and none of the information must contradict. Also, no deus ex machinas, since using it is basically saying to your audience that all of the deduction they did before that point is worthless, since none of that is relevant anymore. To break these rules, you must be masterful, and know what the rules are. The Last Jedi had a potential to break certain expectations, like Rey's parentage, but did it so clumsily and unbelievably that it was a trainwreck. In other words: keep theorising, MatPat. And everybody else, too. Engage with the content creatively, and maintain the logic of a series you like. Keep playing with the Lego pieces the creators provided to you. Theories are a natural product of audience's creativity, and are absolutely fine. They're integral to how we function (what are predictions or speculations if not theories?), and you should not feel ashamed for asking that your favourite creator's work makes sense and connects together smartly.

SinerAthin consistency applies to any work. You can create a fantasy universe as insane as you wish, but it still needs rules to function properly. Things don't need to make sense in *our* world, but they have to, in the end, make sense in the one you're presenting. If, to make your story work, you have to retcon existing rules, the world build up itself needs a restructure. In other words, as an author, it is one's job to make sure the audience gets invested, and audience gets invested when your world makes sense to them.

Eh, I think the outrage over TLJ is massively overblown, but even just the script as shown in the movie could have been done better itself. It would have been better if Luke had tossed it to the side as in "been there, done that, got the T-shirt" instead of the "f*$! that" toss that we actually got. I'd like to think the Leia scene could have been done better. Lots of scenes.

Holdo didn't tell anybody on board the transport her plan because she thought there was a mole... she wasn't aware of how they could be tracked through lightspeed, she thought someone was giving the First Order information so she couldn't tell anyone her plan or it would fail. Especially Poe, who she thinks Leia didn't trust seeing as he last official action was to demote him to captain.

@@Funko_pop_josh been awhile since you've watched it eh? the same technology was also used in Attack of the Clones in 2002 it's very common to put a tracker on someones ship no reason to assume there's a mole. totally ridiculous assumption in that universe The death star tracked the millenium falcon to Yavin in 1977 via a tracker, and Obi Wan tracked Jango Fett to Geognosis in 2002 via a tracker. You don't suddenly need some radical new technology in 2017 to do it, and no one in that universe would assume you had said new technology if you tracked them, theyd just assume you had attached a tracker to them. Leia assuming instantly that there was new technology at play (despite her being the one worried in 1977 about the "ease of our escape, they let us get away") is absurd. it's always been a bs excuse for holdo's behaviour and it's never even stated in the movie that she's actually worried about a mole i might add. HAHAHAHAHAHA! Ok, look. Put ANY of your fan writing out in print. Go ahead. Now, wait to see if you become a best seller. If you don't, you'll know why your writing is not being chosen to make movies of. Your personal preferences, esp. if they happen to be for your own work, aren't exactly a good way to judge if something is actually objectively good, or likely to be seen as good by the majority. The majority thinks these writers are waaaaay more talented than the fan fic out there. If you think they're better, that's your idiosyncratic opinion. You don't make money on movies based on a tiny fraction of the overall population. The fact these movies continue to rake in millions means the majority (who don't even write reviews) enjoy them. Get it? The majority disagree with you. Just maybe, these writers actually *are* better, but you prefer something other people don't. That's fine. But you can't then pretend the franchise should turn on your tastes because they have to make money. Make your own movies and see if maybe you can become as popular, or at least make a go of it.

I don't think not following fan theories hurt the movie. I think not following or accomplishing anything within the franchise is what hurt it. I'll admit, I liked it but I'm not much of a Star Wars fan. But I couldn't help thinking there seemed something very wrong about Episode 8 starting and ending with a small rag tag resistance again a Sith ruled Empire. Isn't that the same situation they were in at the beginning of Episode 4? Shouldn't 5, 6, and 7 have advanced the story?
