YES. This is one of your best theories. Seriously I always felt this way, and completely understood the dark side characters who were ex-jedi. THAT'S A LOT OF TRAUMA. Honestly I pity the ex-jedi sith more than anyone else in Star Wars ... they were forced into a cultish organisation from childhood, forced to not act on their very probably volatile emotions, and ran straight into the arms of someone who specifically looked for folks like them just to manipulate their hatred and grief and trauma for his own gain. Also, Obi-Wan is definitely my favourite SW character, but I honestly think a huge part of Anakin's downfall was his fault and due to the strain of their relationship. Part of what I like about Obi-Wan is that he looks like just a plain old kind of boring hero dude, but his character is actually pretty complex, deep, and morally grey. He's really uniquely written imo. Both the Jedi and Sith are evil, with the Sith being worse but only because the Jedi are bad in the first place. The force is ... well ... a huge force to be reckoned with, and it's super easy for having that much power to corrupt someone, even if their order is specifically designed to prevent such an occurrence.

Matt I do have to say one thing regarding Qui Gon: He was more of a Grey Jedi, and he tried to follow the Will of the Force itself. He could tell that Anakin was unlike any Force-sensitive child anyone ever encountered, and felt that the Force had intervened in some way for the two to have met. If ANYONE would've gone to check on Anakin's mother(or even try to free her from Watto's grasp), it would've most certainly been Qui Gon(had he not met his end by Darth Maul). He almost always went against the grain of the Jedi principles, which is why Yoda made his comment to the young Obi Wan in the end of Episode l, "Qui Gon's defiance I sense in you. Need that you do not." Qui Gon was offered a spot on the Jedi Council, to which he declined as he felt his purpose as a Jedi was to be guided by the very Will of the Force. He was also trained by Dooku when he was a Jedi Master. Arguably, Dooku's training would've been a more suited platform of training and teaching than that of the existing Jedi Code. Dooku understood there were many areas of the Jedi Order that were flawed, but as a Master, he was able to carve his own path in some way. Dooku was also one of the few members of the Jedi who believed they were meant to do more than being the peacekeepers of the Republic, and felt that the Jedi had lost their way(and even their connection to the Force itself) during the time of peace from a Force-user's standpoint. Even more-so when discovering the unfortunate death of his former apprentice and dear friend. I mean for crying out loud, when Qui Gon encountered Darth Maul for those brief seconds on Tatooine and Obi Wan asked him who the unknown assailant was, "I don't know, but he was well-trained in the Jedi arts." was all Qui Gon had to say. The Jedi made the foolish mistake of believing that the Sith had been eradicated, and simply set the thought of their inevitable return to the deepest corner of their minds. Rather than training in preparation for the Sith's return, they pretty much said, "Screw it, they're gone forever. Why would we need to be prepared for an enemy that no longer exists?". It was that very misguided assumption on the Jedi's behalf that led to their downfall. They had, in a sense, betrayed the Force itself through their lack of actions when they became mere lapdogs of the Republic. On top of all this, the Jedi Council placed the Chosen One under the care of newly-deemed Jedi Knight Obi Wan. Had Qui Gon lived, the Council would've gone with Qui Gon's request to be Anakin's Master(after Obi Wan faced The Trials)...and A LOT would've played out differently. Anakin would've had immediate trust in Qui Gon's teachings, since Qui Gon operated more as a Grey Jedi than anything else. Anakin would've become far more powerful under a much wiser and more open-minded Qui Gon than a 'fresh off the Jedi Knight press' Obi Wan. Anakin would've felt comfortable and confident enough to reveal to Qui Gon his love for Padme, which Qui Gon would then give him guidance on the matter as a whole. Palpatine would've met his demise in Episode lll, Anakin would've been deemed a Jedi Master, his transgression of a romanticized relationship with Padme would've been overlooked(most likely due to Padme being a Senator of the Republic), and Luke and Leia would've been ushered into the Jedi Order. In time, a more resolved Jedi Order would be formed, and the Jedi would be prepared for the next revival of the Sith with the aid of the Chosen One plus 2 offspring. TLDR; If Qui Gon hadn't died, Anakin would've remained loyal to the Jedi Order and Episodes IV-IX wouldn't exist(for the most part).

@hello world Something tells me the whole "Jedi are not allowed to form attachments" is because George Lucas was heavily affected by his divorce in 1983 and maybe didn't truly get over it (not that I blame him). The whole Jedi Order was also molded after Buddhist Monks from what I read in articles and watched in special features. He might have allowed those two things to have a little too much influence on the Prequels than it should have. I mean, come on. Marriage and attachments lead you down a dark path? What kinda of logic is that? Sure a divorce is heartbreaking and sure you're going to blame the other person amongst other things, but this is just ridiculous.

I think that’s why anakin really WAS the chosen one, he DID bring the force back into balance. For centuries there had been no sith, only light side, only when he became Vader did he bring back the other half of the force
@grimlord31812 жыл бұрын
"For centuries there had been no Sith" Umm, did you actually watch the movies?
@stocky71342 жыл бұрын
@@grimlord3181 The sith were basically "extinct". Like the Jedi said they had been for millennia. This is because of the sith rule of 2. "Bane's Rule of Two mandated that there could be only two Sith at a given time: a Sith Master to embody power and a Sith apprentice to crave it." The sith were lurking in the shadows following Darth Bane's plan of following the rule of 2 so that the sith could grow more powerful than the whole Jedi order and exact revenge. "The Rule of Two's establishment coincided with the creation of a plot, known as the Grand Plan, for the Sith to corrupt the Galactic Republic from within, diminish and disgrace the Jedi Order, and eventually rise and conquer the galaxy; the Sith would soften up their enemies before zeroing them in for total subjugation." This was eventually done by Darth Sidious. Now there's an argument to be had that I think @eternalmiasma5586 is trying to say here. The light side of the force was more powerful than the dark side in terms of numbers and probably power for a long time after the Jedi-Sith war. This argument relies heavily on the fact that some say the Jedi interpreted the "prophecy of the chosen one" wrong. That the chosen one was supposed to bring balance to the force, but the balance means equal power on both the light and the dark side. To me, all light side and no dark doesn't seem too balanced. Like day and night.

True, but we must also take in consideration the mentality of this galaxy. For them, the Jedi Order was a religious, honorable army of peace keepers. They were THE Jedi and joining their ranks was the greatest honor one could ever achieve. So we have a lot of parents happy that their child gets to bear that honor. Another aspect is the Force. These children had great power and were too dangerous to be left alone. Imagine a child throwing a tantrum in the middle of store and bringing the entire building down because they wouldn't know how to control the Force. So the Republic gave Jedi right to take these Force sensitive children into training, so others may live without worry. You said it yourself, these children are not mentally prepared, so they need someone to constantly watch over them. If they lost control in the middle of temple, there were hundreds of masters ready to jump in and help. I cannot deny that at the end, Jedi lost their ways and basically became super soldiers for republic, but reasoning stands. They were founded to take care of all force sensitive children in galaxy and make sure they do not harm others and also use their powers to help. We can argue that its kidnapping, but in universe where random children can have power to level buildings just by throwing tantrum, I'd say that Jedi or something similar is a necessity. And one last thing. You assume that these children know they lost the family, but Jedi take them so young that they barely know who their parents are. For them, the Jedi are their family. Masters that take care of them are their mothers and fathers. Other younglings and padawans are their brothers and sistes. You remember in Episode 2 as Yoda was teaching the younglings? He seemed like an old wise grandfather, slowly and patiently teaching his grandchildren. Of course, that is my point of view. Feel free to hate it or ignore it, but you will not change it. It's complex. The Jedi did NOT like to train anyone who was "too old" while the Sith took in those like Dooku and Anakin. The Jedi tried to squash out individuality while the Sith actually encouraged it (to a large degree.) The Jedi were falling into apathy while the Sith, to their credit, had learned of their biggest failure, their infighitng, and thus Darth Bane instituted the Rule of Two to get around that, plus by making the apprentice get strong enough to defeat the master in order to take over, they were getting better. Of course, the Sith hated relationships and caring just as much, and likely even more, than the Jedi (see how Sidious abused Maul, for instance, or how Sidious grinned when Vader went "Nooooooo!" whne learning of the death of Padme.) Also, the Sith are indeed far more power hungry than the Jedi. Also, to be fair, Anakin never denies that Palaptine is evil, when Obi-wan states it. He just says "From my point of view the Jedi are evil." Meaning, that, yes, he believes Palpatine to be bad, but the Jedi are equally bad, and if Palpatne will get him more of what he wants than the Jedi, he'll take Palpatine's side. It's clear, from Anakin's dialogue to Padme, that Palpatine is just a means to an end for him. Once he's found how to save her, he wouldn't hesistate to take out Sidious and rule himself, and even suggests that to Padme that the two can take over the Empire and rule the galaxy together. Even Sidious, when he said "Darth Vader will become more powerful than either of us" was expecting Anakin to beat Obi-wan and KNEW that, sooner or later, Anakin would take him out as well.

@@ramblingentertained Considering the monastic tradition, which the Jedi Orders are modelled upon, is responsible for the vast majority of intellectualism over the past 1000 years; responsible for philosophy, critical thought, and the preservation of immense amounts of knowledge? Considering the institution of the University is born out of that same tradition? Considering that the vast majority of people entering any trades, be they scribes, soldiers, architects or scientists, all left their families to apprentice abroad? I'd say it worked fine for them.
@ramblingentertained4 жыл бұрын
GreyHunter Like which one? By which one I mean which monastic traditions.
@GreyHunter884 жыл бұрын
@@ramblingentertained Well, to take a purely Western example, the Benedictine and Dominican orders come immediately to mind. By its very nature, most monastic living involved a lot of introspection, and the copying or illumination of manuscripts was seen as an important devotional activity. Monks maintained large libraries of ancient and seminal texts, and spent lives copying them down by hand. Even if the individual monks themselves didn't fully understand the texts, the mere fact that they made copies of them ensured that countless of these treatises and documents survived when they would have otherwise been lost to time. Aristotle, Galen, and others. They also spend lives in introspection and thought, and many orders (such as the Dominicans) prioritized intellectualism and teaching. They produced many of the greatest intellectuals of the Medieval era, such as St. Thomas Aquinas, William of Occam and Anselm of Canterbury. Many modern people dismiss these philosophers since their primary area of thought was religious in nature, but one cannot divest 'religion' from 'philosophy' in most pre-modern societies. The fact is that the vast majority of professions required one to leave their family at a young age and often never go back. This is as true for a young child sent to be a servant on some noble's estate, as it is for the son of a noble who is sent off to squire for some older knight. The nuclear family as we know it didn't exist, and outside of agricultural families working the same plot of land over generations (who do make up the majority of people, don't get me wrong), it was seen as very normal to 'give up' a child to a higher calling or better life.

I love that Obiwan says "Only a Sith deals in Absolutes" when the jedi literally brainwash kids to deattached themselves from their emotions and become warriors. Jedi are not technically evil in the way of how they attain new recruits. They are not kidnapping kids because the parents, if they have any, are aloud to say, "No, I do not want my child going away." However, children are not allowed to see their parents because as mentioned in canon, attachments can lead to the Dark Side. Does not mean they can't have relationships with others, and the Jedi are not said they shouldn't be cold hearted, but they are to have compassion, not attachments.They have to be taught from an early age in order to fully build a strong foundation into the Jedi Order. Also, everyone knows it is hard becoming a Jedi, so the younglings would need years in order to perfect their training and hopefully becoming Jedi Knights. Of course, anyone who's anyone would tell you the Jedi Order had its flaws as the Jedi soon became prideful and arrogant, and their rules also were sometimes wrong and unfair, which is why some Jedi were "grey" Jedi. They respected the Code, but when necessary, they would disobey tradition in order to do what was right. As many people would also tell you, the prequels show you the flaws in the Order. But how they went about recruiting their new students was not entirely wrong, but I see what your getting at. Know that I enjoy your videos, but I love Star Wars a lot more. Thing is, in the Legends continuity, there's a specific event that the Jedi committed (under the Republic's orders) that confirms the evil of the Jedi, and created the undying enemy that is the Sith: They committed genocide against the Sith populace. Not just the actual force users, but the civilians, too. Men, women, children, all were murdered in an attempt to completely wipe them out. This is why the Sith are constantly focused on hatred, fear, and revenge: because millenia before, the defeated civilization that could have surrendered and made peace... Was completely eradicated. And the survivors fled, remembering this genocide and creating the evil Sith as we know them today.

The way I describe the difference between Jedi and Sith is this: There were once two Park Rangers tasked to help preserve a national park. One Park Ranger sought to preserve the park exactly as it was, clearing brush to prevent fires, driving away wolves to protect the other species, and carefully balancing the relationship between the wildlife and their environment. The other Park Ranger disapproved of this methodology, as it goes against the natural order. Wildfires are necessary to clear away old growth, wolves are needed to keep herbivores from doing damage to their surroundings, and too much micromanagement would require a lot of manpower and would wind up being wasteful and hurting what you intend to preserve. Both the Jedi and Sith philosophies are correct, from a certain point of view. The Jedi trend too much towards preservation, to the point where life becomes stale and loses touch with real life. The Sith trend too much towards darwinism, which leads to death, anarchy, or totalitarianism because they don't have a real plan outside of "survival of the fittest".

Looking at it from the perspective of the extended universe, the official Jedi Code is extremely different from how it is portrayed in the movies. Balance, control, and mastery of one's self, and therefore the world around them, is the entire focus of the Code. The Jedi Code is not evil, but it is also not inherently good. It's neutral by design, and that causes some major issues. If you were to classify the Jedi and the Sith Codes in terms of D&D alignment, Jedi Code is entirely Lawful Neutral with no room for being anything else, while the Sith Code is Chaotic Any. The Sith we see in the movies are all evil, but the Sith in the EU are not always evil. Many are Chaotic Neutral, and some are even Chaotic Good. Interestingly enough, most fallen Jedi tend toward LAWFUL Evil, like Darth Vader. They still have their own strict code and rules they learned from the Jedi Code, but they follow a darker path motivated by selfish desires. Their desire corrupts the Jedi Code, but the opposite cannot happen to a purely trained Sith who follows the Sith Code directly. The Sith Code emphasizes freedom to such an extreme degree that it does not mandate an abandonment of all emotion. In fact, it EMBRACES emotion. Most Sith do trend towards evil due to following selfish desires regardless of consequence and who gets hurt in the process, but selfless Sith who actually desire to help those in need did exist. It's honestly really interesting how the Jedi Code is, in its attempts to be neutral, the SOURCE of most Lawful Evil in the Star Wars universe. Placing those strict restrictions on those who follow it only winds up leading to repressing your resentment instead of letting it out in a healthy way, and that fundamental flaw is what leads to most of the events of the Star Wars movies.

sorry but the jedi code is NOT neutral. it is the rejection of all emotion and empathy. (note: yes they are encouraged to have COMPASSION aka understand others problems and emotions but are not allowed/supposed to feel for those they interact with.) that is not neutral. its the other extream. the sith embrace all emotions 100% and the jedi reject emotions 100%. or at least those are the ideals they are supposed to work towards. the reson grey jedi/sith are the best is quite simple. they are funtional human(oid) beeings with an stable emotional framework. can the hate? sure. are they consumed by it? no. @@aeonreign6456 1) both sides do what they do for fundamentally selfserving purposes. they amass extream amounts of power (disregarding nearly everyone in their way if nessesary/doesnt serve their purpose) in a bid to fulfill their "ultimate goal", which happens to be the eradication of the respective other order... does not sound very neutral to me... 2) stepping away from the chart for a second: both sides are pseudo religios extreamists and fanatics, deadset on the genoside of the other faction. unsurprisingly this is seen as a fundamentaly evil act.

Kinda like how the Catholic Church’s suppression of sexual desire towards women lead to some priests dark abuse of children

But it’s this kind of tempting freedom that draws force users to the Dark Side. Leaving the Jedi Order and becoming a Sith is just breaking free of one form of imprisonment and becoming trapped in another. Once someone sets down the path of the Dark Side, for but a moment, it will forever dominate their lives as a whole.

well, it is said that they take kids that young so they can't easily remember and feel loss- and they aren't allowed to take the child if the parent says no, because that would be against the Jedi code. Although if parents heard that their child could become a strong powerful Jedi, they'd most likely take it. Because becoming a Jedi would be an honour.

People who try to paint the Jedi as evil forget that the only two times in SW canon you see Jedi take children... they're asked Shmi was asked multiple times. Jedi training is basically a boarding school. The idea that you can compare this situation as parental abandonment is just forcing an argument People who think Jedi are bad are simply contrarians and moral relativists. The fact that matpat tries to argue that the storntroopers are innocent bystanders speaks volumes. There's no real argument against the ajedi so he makes one. And why doesn't he acknowledge the fact that the vast majority of the Jedi in star wars history become functional and normal adults? Because it goes against the narrative that there's something wrong with the jedis methods. I mean how honest is someone whose only argument against the jedi is the single worst case of PERSONAL failure. If you stop to actually analyze the plot, matpat ... you'd realize that the reason anything goes wrong in star wars is due to sith manipulation... that was the entire point of the prequel trilogy. They didn't lie about their ability to the Senate. Palpatine was actively diminishing their ability to sense danger. It was a development throughout the plot. You're blaming the Jedi for being forced into the position of general by the sith... and then saying they're evil because they lost at defending the galaxy. Contrarianism fools people into thinking they've made good arguments. Channel doesn't deserve a sub after this video.

@@nunyabysnss9755 It's not putting the kids in a boarding school that's the problem. It's putting the kids in a boarding school *and then cutting off all contact with their families that's the problem* here. Whether the child and parents consented isn't the big issue. The big issue is *those kids are never going to see their parents or siblings again* . That's not talking about the *other* issues. The issues that made taking children so young under peacetime circumstances necessary in the first place. They're taught not to have emotions at all. They're not allowed to start families of their own *at all* as of the Russan Reformation (far earlier then that, really. It was even Taboo in KOTOR, 4,000BBY). They're told not to have anger, fear, be passionate about anything or anyone that isn't the Jedi order and the Republic. They're not even supposed to grieve. You either try and fail at that. Or you succeed and become the clinical definition of a sociopath to one extent or another. You're asked not to have ambition;but that's so hard wired into the psyche of any species that managed to crawl off of it's homeworld in the first place as to be non-senseical. You're going to have an easier job cut out for you trying to bring an oasis to the desert by peeing in the sand. No wonder students keep falling to the dark side: Power is the only thing you have left. And it's pretty clear that some folks who wrote for the EU had that opinion too, look at EU Luke Skywalker as the example. Or Kreia from Kotor II, who was a singular voice of reason somehow and pointed out both sith and Jedi are full of lunatics.

2 years later, episode 6 of Book of Boba Fett is really helping support the whole mind washed jedi theory here. It also helps support Asohkas reasoning for not taking Anakins offer to rejoin the order, she took it as her opportunity for a free out from an order she now realised never trusted her, but only used her.
