Interesting theory. However, it doesn't take into account the possibility that some former members of the Paw Patrol may have simply grown up and entered a form of retirement, still alive & well. In line with this thought, it's also possible that the human leader of the group isn't the original founder, but rather was chosen by his predicessor to continue in their place once they entered retirement.

In the tracker episode it is implied that Rocky prepared his whole set of equipment not to mention Ryder is coming up with new ideas for the pups off screen before they are even used meaning certainly Ryder created the main six pups rescue sets first before recruitment and also he came up with other ideas later on not on day one because of how much pups get new equipment it doesn't make sense that if there were pups before them who just used the classic gear

The fact that they are expendable is true. They are stray dogs, you can find them everywhere and the show presents it so by recruiting dogs of varied shapes and sizes. At the same time they are not restricted to just the main city. The fact of the matter is that those dogs have all living expenses taken care of. They are given specialized training, equipment and a purpose . At the same time they have a reasonable degree of freedom. They can do whatever, as long as it does not conflict with their purpose (just like any other job). I think that Ryder has the wellbeing of the dogs as a priority (for whatever reason). Ryder does not try to cut costs at the expense of the livelihood of the dogs, nor does it look like he sees them as the equivalent of one-use latex gloves (put them on, if they get damaged or the task is done, throw them and get new ones). When Rubble joins the team, the vehicle handed down was perfectly operational. Besides some exterior wear and tear, it looked like it was properly maintained even when not in use. Also, he tries to save Rubble instead of just finding a replacement. This theory is based around the idea of "recruiting stray dogs". You can look at it from both points of view. Either you lean onto the "expendable" side (cheap and easy to replace), or on the "rehabilitation" side (a new life and a new purpose). The common ground is that there is a trade between the dogs and the community. The dogs are taken care of by the community and in exchange, they take care of the community by handling emergency situations.

While not exactly applicable to the show but more for the avalanche dog example, the dogs are just better at it than humans. Sure work dogs could be put into danger by using their tracking skills, but it's not like they aren't the best tool around. An autonomous detection system that can find a body under 3 feet of snow? That'd be a couple million dollar research contract if they didn't exist.

As someone who has been working on this show for over a decade, this was a kick to watch! I can verify that the animation team is very much in on the joke that Zuma never gets called on missions (we make internal memes of it all the time XD ). And the Rubble badge on the screen at 5:30 I think was just a straight-up oversight. It was season 1, things got missed. We had no idea at the time it would blow up to the phenom it's become but sure glad it has!

This brings up another issue: why is Ryder, a kid, managing pups to do adults' work? Has there been an instance in the show that explain why it isn't an adult that's managing the pups? Of course it's a kids' show so the main character is a kid, but wouldn't it be weird for a kid to manage a team of fire fighters and police officers? Does Ryder even get paid for his work? Did something happen to his parents? Also, if the pups are the only animals talking and behaving like humans (being able to express desires, that is) do they have animal rights only or do they also have human rights? Would them be hired for work be considered abuse or just voluntary work? Because if the previous pups died, did they die of old age/they can retire or are they forced to work until they die in an accident or die in the line of duty, basically?

the real life rescue dogs are misrepresented though. It's portrayed that they are chosen due to their expendablity, but it really should have been noted that most of the time that dogs have jobs it's because they are better than humans at detecting stuff (people, drugs, explosives, etc.) mostly through scent! They are more qualified than humans in a lot of search and rescue tracking because they have a super sense. That point of the vid does not past muster.

Well, I think the comment on the puppies being successful is great but if not it's no loss touches on that. The dogs can def be super useful, and do jobs better than humans could, but it's also true that they do not have as high a value as a human life does. Possibly. While it seems a little bit of a stretch, my own theory about Ryder might be a stretch too. Think about it: Ryder is crazy strong, crazy smart, high level of endurance (one episode he climbed all the way from the bottom to the top of the Lookout using only the fire pole, without breaking a sweat) the pups obey him without question, and the pups are severely distraught when he's not there to give them every single instruction. Also the people of adventure Bay aren't exactly bright. With the exceptions of a select few, ryder and his pups are the only ones able to handle the emergencies. My theory stretch is that maybe somehow he's manipulating their decision making so that he can strengthen his superiority complex as well as their devotion to him and his team.

The evidence and logic lines up, though I think Ryder's motivations are more altruistic. Remember he's 10, by all logic he inherited the Paw Patrol from one of his parents, meaning how it functions is just normal to him. He likely sees what he's doing as good, taking orphaned pups off the street and training them to be rescue dogs. Also at just 10 he likely hasn't been in charge long enough and has had a really good run of luck that he has yet to lose any dogs. Ryder's team isn't the first Paw Patrol team it's HIS first team. Whomever ran it before Ryder probably lost many dogs to either accidents or old age, but since this is a show of young kids the topic will be ignore or left as vague as possible and we won't see the inevitable first time Ryder loses a team member.

If you think about it, it's a win-win for everyone. Since the dogs are strays, the elements will be very harsh to them. No one to cuddle with for warmth, no one to feed you and care for you. At least with the Paw Patrol program (say that three times fast), they get these basic necessities. Sure, the work is dangerous. But life itself is pretty freaking dangerous already. And these dogs are saving people from dying. And if they die in the line of duty, then they died knowing they helped someone: that their death meant SOMETHING! In the reality where Ryder didn't take them in, they'd die of starvation, cold weather, or some Common disease. In Paw Patrol, they die from collapsing buildings, or avalanches, or even of old age. They die peacefully with full bellies, happy memories and wonderful friends. There is no right or wrong answer here. But I'll support an organization that tries it's best to make EVERYONE a winner. If the town is so used to the paw patrol idea and Ryder is literally a child then doesn't it stand to reason that he isn't the first human to lead the paw patrol? If he was he would probably have had to work harder to prove to the town that it was a good idea. And the older folk in town are also generally accepting and used to it - they have a special button for calling Ryder on all of their phones for heaven's sake - which implies that the paw patrol has been a thing for a while, and we never see or meet Ryder's parents or even a guardian, he never even mentions them as far as I know, and he lives alone with his dogs. So what if it's not just the pups, but the entirety of the paw patrol squad, including Ryder, who are seen as expendable or replacements?

One was when Marshall was left alone in the Lookout and Katie called for help, thinking she is calling Ryder, but instead caught Marshall. Another and more recent is when Ryder left to get some repair part for Robodog and leave Katie in charge, giving her spare Pup-Pad. I love how all of these dark theories would’ve went away had the producers spent just one more week double-checking everything in the episode for loopholes or weird questions. Just one line about the Mayor getting in touch with the team’s supplier and Rubble having to ride with Marshall until then would’ve solved the vehicle problem perfectly. Also, swapping Zuma and Rubble’s vehicle numbers.

Previous pups could've just retired because they're no longer "pups", or enlisted to be integrated as certified police/rescue/support dogs, with Ryder being paid a sum of cash for a dog. Ryder is still on that grind. Man knows that puppies sell, and he knows that training them early could make for very lucrative liquid assets in the future. I wouldn't be surprised if some dogs died in action, the jobs are still risk-prone jobs after all, even with humans. As the theory states, dogs are more expendable after all. I wouldn't be surprised if there were originally some shady undertakings by the CIA to create sentient and highly-intelligent dogs, maybe originally devised as a plan to assassinate the Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. With the Cuban Missile crisis averted, the dogs were released at the prediction that their genes would probably be phased out of the gene pool, to avoid public scrutiny if documents were to arise. But this plan backfired, and the sentient dogs gained a significant genetic foothold, eventually being integrated as a core part of society itself, and the start of experimentation with other animals like cats, with the Cat Pack, to harness their properties of retractable claws and nimbleness, which could prove to be useful. Honestly, a pretty solid system for humans if you ask me. Their expendability and useful capabilities would also be useful in towards the end of the Cold War, like Vietnam. And, in wars like in the Middle East or Iraq, further reason for pursuing their integration. The only things that would spell disaster for the system is when dogs start fighting for Sentient animal rights and labor laws, go on strike, and start what is the equivalent of the Enlightenment period or Civil-rights era for dogs and other animals. It is a morally ambiguous ordeal, a question we are also tackling in the real world for the possibility of other intelligent life from humans.

The fact is, is that they just kept the tag on the bottom of the screen because either they forgot about it, or they were too lazy and figured people wouldn’t notice. (Same goes for the pup pad.) The real version I am assuming is the tag is not meant to be there and that would be the true canonical version. And for the wear and tear it is again possibly just an error that they had already added to the hat for up close shots in the show for both the hat and vehicle during season one and they never took the time to change it. And Ryder probably assumed since Rubble was still little he would have a little more growing room and gave him a bigger vehicle intentionally just like in the real world when we get clothes they are generally a little big on us because it gives us growing room but when your 6 and your in the next size a 6-8 the same clothes are meant to still fit you till your 8. All of the extra pups like Everest were already fully grown so it makes sense why they could already fit it. The numbers are probably ordered by who were the most important in the show but they made it in the show for the order of who joined first. So the numbers don’t really make sense for the vehicle now because when the show was in production they just ordered it by what they thought they should be and it became more of a problem when they got to writing this particular episode of the series. Again I am just assuming this is the case and all of these little errors might just be all be a writing issue but it could very well have some deep lore that one of the pups quit or they died. The show might have some deep lore but we can only theorize. 💭
