So, I was thinking about this movie recently; and while I do wish Jack and Rose could have lived happily ever after, I think Jack's death was necessary. Not for Rose, but for the audience. As time goes on, the disaster becomes more and more just a footnote in history, detached from the actual trauma of the event. We can look back at the reports of the sinking, and all the death, and realize how horrible it must have been; but it is still just numbers to us. By the time the movie came out, the Titanic had been at the bottom of the ocean for more than 80 years already. Very few survivors were left alive, and for most people; several generations separated them from the wreck. I think having Jack, the charming co-lead of the movie die, after we spent so much time getting attached to not only his character, but also his growing relationship with Rose; was meant to be the emotional punch necessary to make the wreck feel real to us in the modern world. Seeing their adventures aboard the liner, you really began to root for the couple. If it were any other movie, they likely would have gotten their happy ending. But Cameron wanted us to feel the loss, even a little bit, that the survivors and family of those lost aboard the ship felt; by taking this character from us, just inches from the finish line. In that way, Jack is meant ot be a stand in for everyone who lost their lives in the disaster.

I think it’s very very important to mention that the German navy HAD a reason to sink the Lusitania because there was apparently ammunition and weapons aboard the Lusitania and the Germans basically said “oh that’s a cargo ship carrying stuff to supply our enemies” so the U-Boat sank the Lucy other then that the German Navy (to my knowledge) didn’t sink any other ocean liners on their regular routes carrying paying passengers
@BuckClucks10 ай бұрын
They had a reason, but it was in breach of International Law the way the attack was carried out. You had to ask the merchant ship for boarding permission to check for war material, and if you found material the ship had to be scuttled and all civilians onboard rescued, or if close to shore, put into life boats and they can make it to shore. Germany attacking the Lusitania never even said that a attack was coming. And it was also a guess whether or not the ship was carrying war material. And in the future Germany sank many civilian ships that had no war material on board.
@anonymouschicken204 ай бұрын
Wow, it's very logical to think that typical American and British civilian ships carried spies and secret supplies. Most ships sank because of that hypothesis would've been mistakes, but Lusitania just happened to actually carry spies and secret supplies. The Germans just had a lucky hit that time...

Jack could be a time traveler, but it is much more likely that the people who worked on the movie had some errors in researching. But I do like the tangent you took with Jack being a time traveler changing history to save more lives in the future. [ This reminds me of that time where people thought that an unreleased footage from a 1928 Charlie Chaplin film showed a time-traveling woman in the background walking while appearing to talk on a cell phone. ] [ Just imagine if the Hindenburg didn't explode, would we all be flying on rigid airships? ] [ Added note on 1/10/2021 - not really new to the channel, been a sporadic viewer ever since MatPat hosted "The Runner" ... I was that person who won some monetary prizes from doing sketches of each team in the game ;) - those were fun days. but back to the point, i am fully aware of the style of theorizing Matpat does but most of the times there is a thread of in-world evidence and logic to back up his main point ... this one just seemed a bit lacking. I'd imagine that if he wanted to he could also craft a similar "Time-traveler" theory based upon some of the in-world time inaccuracies in Wonder Woman 1984 ;) ]

Let's not forget the whole story was told from a 101 year old Rose's perspective. A 101 year old who is about to die at the end of the movie could easily confuse Lake Wissota and Santa Monica Pier as something Jack said. I believe that could be a clue as to where Rose did most of her ice fishing later in life and the pier as something Rose definitely visited in the horseback picture between 1917-1923. Same thing with "Molly" Brown. She confused Brown's name she went by on the Titanic with the name she heard for years and years after the sinking just as she confused actually doing the activities with something Jack actually said.

That's a great analysis, I've never considered that before. She couldn't remember all those tiny details accurately like 80+ years later.
@ericschultz40043 күн бұрын
@@tqsuited I think James Cameron might have purposefully ignored some of those details in order to make the story more of a feel of one coming from an actual 101 year old. And now that you mentioned something, I could dive further into a lot of the internet hating on Rose as a "selfish {you know what}" and bring up what I really think happened in the story. I think Cal was just a really cool guy who might just be a victim of heartbreak and the stories of him chasing her with a gun might be over exaggerated. Here's the first thing I go to though: so, the posit is that in Jack's original timeline, the Titanic never crashes and sinks. So what his entire mission would boil down to is knowing EXACTLY where a particular iceberg will be in specific moment to make sure the boat hits it. Unless you're saying that he was taking several different trips beforehand to scout where all the icebergs were in the Atlantic, it's not like there's available information in the future on the coordinates of icebergs from the past.

Well the ww1 theory is kinda not accurate. Titanic had 2 identical sister ships Olympic and Britannic and when the war broke they were taken by the British government and Olympic has been made into troop transport and Britannic was made into a hospital ship. If titanic would survive, it would probably also be refited as a troop transport. And that would mean that if it would be sunk, there wouldn't be any American passengers on board and US wouldn't join the war early.

I know Mat prefers to make it zebras rather then horses, but it's much simpler that she doesn't remember it correcly and make up blanks in her memory. Because human mind doesn't remember anything at all, it just recall HOW we remember that event. That's why mandela effect or deja vu exist. It is how your brain alter your memory because more time passes and more blurry that memory is. It's like old magnetic tapes. MatPat: *TIMETRAVEL* Edit: let me clear something up. I get that it wouldn’t make sense for the directors to purposely add incorrect parts in the movie- I’m just saying I think it’s funny that , to make the storyline make sense, matpat would insist on time travel rather than a more realistic answer. @omniverse79763 жыл бұрын
Yeah that could have killed even more people. The thing with humans is we learn from mistakes. Without the titanic sinking it would have caused those Maritime Laws to not exist for a few years or maybe ever. Or like how before 9/11 airport security was nothing like it was today and it was really low. After that day we fixed it so it would never happen again. To be honest if I had the ability to time travel like Jack…. I wouldn’t change a thing. We’ve survived this long and we have become a better species for it. For everything that has happened to have been possible it required these tragedies and sacrifices and I wouldn’t change any of them

I think you're missing the more obvious Film Theory here; Jack is a time traveler, sure. He comes back, orchestrates a situation where he can get on The Titanic and sail across the globe on the historic vessel, which in his timeline is legendary. He's not some temporal agent, he's just a rich guy on a time travel holiday, playing a character. But then, he does something he's not supposed to do. He sees Rose about to jump and saves her. This sets into motion the events that cause Titanic to collide with the iceberg. This is why Jack is so surprised when the iceberg hits - This isn't the way history is supposed to go. He still has a plan, though - He'll bail out and head back to his own time before the ship sinks, so he gets Rose onto the lifeboat and then he'll be off... Only she doesn't get on the life raft. Now he needs to stay or she'll surely die. That's why he's so upset with her for jumping off. Ultimately, he dies and she survives and the whole timeline is messed up - And time travel is never invented for some reason and instead of being a time traveler, Jack ends up an actor...

I honestly kept thinking his theory was going to bop into this one directly. His theory is good but not as good as "Terminator: Titanic" if only because his premise is based on the idea that people in an alternate future timeline where the iceberg disaster doesn't happen, somehow have figured out it would happen. Which given no one is there to see the iceberg, the ship famously states it's "iceberg proof" to paraphase it; which also would be way more glanced over in a history where it doesn't run into icebergs, etc. It's a lot of, "we know stuff from history were people were now never at, in the middle of the ocean, at night" to buy into them discovering that this one girl's suicide saved the ship but was disasterous in various other ways.
@GriFFonRec43 жыл бұрын
@@GreyUsurper Whats more likely? That the writers and director all missed crucial details in their props and stories, or that they missed the fact that it would be pretty hard to predict an iceberg hitting the titanic if the titanic didn't hit an iceberg in the future. Your statement is 100% logical and actually is hard to argue against, but at that point we are arguing who made the biggest blunder. They could have just had Jack tell time appropriate stories or have him with unfiltered cigarettes and such, but they didn't. But thinking so far ahead as to how did the future even know there was an iceberg to hit in the first place is more of a missable plot hole in my opinion. All time travel stories are going to have plot holes, just depends on how big and noticeable. Yours is actually a very crucial and insightful one, but ultimately pretty small and missable if you aren't a gigabrain.

There’s a deleted scene where Jack’s walking along some promenade with rose where he says when he was in Paris he didn’t like Dadaism. But Dadaism wasn’t invented until 1916 so that’s another piece of evidence.

Honestly, after seeing this theory, I’d really like to see a version of Titanic from Jack’s perspective. All of the moral and emotional turmoil of having to sacrifice the thousands to save the millions, as well as his perspective on his relationship with Rose. Just imagine it, being conscripted for a suicide mission where you are going to doom more than 1000 innocent people to a watery grave and having reservations about that. Jack might think of abandoning the mission at the last minute, but then sees Rose trying to commit suicide. How can he not save her? Would he feel guilty about his relationship with her or not? These are all things I’d really like to see.

Not to mention in this AU Jack is likely being sent on a one way trip. He probably knows he’s gonna die and go down with the ship never to return to his original time. That’s a pretty hard pill to swallow, anyone can lose their nerve. But he saves Rose at first so she wouldn’t commit suicide but then he sees how unhappy she is so he’s determined to save her in a more meaningful way. He definitely didn’t plan to fall in love but that helps give Rose the strength to not just survive but live. So him going back in time falling in love with Rose and his determination to save her gives him the conviction to carry out his mission with minimal regrets (thousands of innocent lives are still sacrificed after all) but at least the girl that was originally going to die was now saved and granted a better life.

I feel like if he is that omnipotent to know that saving her would change the course of the world war he does not really have any moral obligations anymore. I mean at this point is more like a god! He probably lived through thousands of different timelines to find the right one where the events happen the way they are meant to.

Jack's presence on the Titanic actually caused the sinking in a simpler way: if the lookouts hadn't been distracted by watching him and Rose kissing, they would have seen the iceberg a few seconds earlier and the Titanic would have missed it.
@rkbkirin59753 жыл бұрын
Haha, that is a good point that should have been included. Whatever mechanism Jack is using for time travel, he clearly has access to key points of probability or else how would he have been able to win the ticket in the card game in the first place. He already knew what hand the Swede was going to play and how to beat him. (This rabbit hole just keeps on going!)

@UPRailRoad-xg8cb2 жыл бұрын
Not just that but there are several saftey features, regulations etc. that went into effect due to the sinking of the Titanic. The lifeboats was the most noted change but several others include development of the ice patrol, all ships required to have radios on 24/7 to answer distress calls (because of the issue involving the Californian), raising the height of the water tight bulkheads (check out what they did to Titanic's sisters, Olympic and Britannic after Titanic sank), eventual improvement of hull design due to greater understanding of metallurgy and the invention of welding which did away with the riveted hull design Titanic had. Long story short, many safety features the maritime industry has today is a direct result of the Titanic sinking. I know if I had the chance to go back in time to save the Titanic, I WOULDN'T! Yes it's sad that 1500 people lost their lives because of it but it had to happen to make the ships of today much safer to sail on.
@AngerMaker4132 жыл бұрын
@@UPRailRoad-xg8cb you don’t think another ship would have just experienced the same disaster and then those measures would have been put in place? If it wasn’t the titanic, it would have just been another ship to make history.
@TheNinjaNiky2 жыл бұрын
@@AngerMaker413 not necessarily. If it was a lesser known or not as big of a ship, it probably would've been swept under the rug. It would've happened eventually sure, but it's likely a lot of ship's would've sunk before that, as they have always been doing lol
@UPRailRoad-xg8cb2 жыл бұрын
@@AngerMaker413 Add to that imagine if it was a bigger ship. If Titanic hadn't sunk, it would have lost the title of worlds largest ship to S.S. Imperator just one year later. The toll could have been worse if it happened to Imperator. Also consider if it happened today with a modern ship such as on of Royal Caribbean's Oasis class ships (the current largest passenger ships in the world). Those have a capacity to hold 7,000 passengers and crew. It could have been 5,000 lives lost instead of just 1,500. All things considered, we were lucky it happened to the Titanic and not an even larger ship.

If Jack was a time traveler, he really WAS pretty smart because the sinking of the Titanic was a major reality check. It’s lack of rescue boats and lifeguard suits was actually a serious issue that nobody took seriously at the time. However when thousands died on the Titanic, people paid MUCH more attention and precautions (that have saved an *unprecedented* amount of lives) were put in place.
