There's actually another way this could have gone down; the movie just never happens. I mean, we could have followed Simba after he gets kicked out and see him form a coalition and then take over a new pride (ok actually that would be a reallly cool movie) but Scar might have just never challenged Mufasa. There are cases of up to three male lions ruling a pride simultaineously with shared power, and that could have happened here. Mufasa and Scar rule equally, kick out Simba, the Pride Lands never dissolve, and SImba probably goes and takes over Zira's pride or something.

Also worth mentioning is that Pride Rock wouldn't be devoid of vegetation like it shows in the movie. Without herbivores for the lions to feed on the foliage would have grown exponentially larger. The actual directors said in interviews they want the movie to be more realistic in more ways then one. This is also supposedly why Simba's dad doesn't care for him as much, because (Directors quote, not mine) it would be more realistic. These guys have no idea what realism is.
