When I was little I always laughed so hard at this scene. I think because I understood that when it's something you should probably not do you want to more. Like in school during tests we had to quiet but sometimes people crack you up to the point of tears and I can't control it.

Ed Wynn was a legendary vaudevillian comedian and tv host before his son convinced him to give serious acting a go. Turns out, he was a natural. He earned an academy award nomination for playing against type in the Diary of Anne Frank. I learned through dvd commentary that Julie Andrews found it very difficult to keep a straight face during this scene because she found Ed Wynn incredibly charming and funny. Dick Van Dyke, as a big fan of vaudeville, knew of Ed Wynn's reputation and was also very happy to be working with one of his professional heroes.

It's a good thing that Uncle Albert never died laughing since at the end of the movie it was mentioned that Mr. Dawes Sr. died laughing.
@afriendofbean2 жыл бұрын
@Ryan Swanson My guess is that Mr. Dawes Sr. is more of a senior citizen while Uncle Albert is more young where maybe laughing caused Mr. Dawes Sr. to get a heart attack since he was very old looking like he had a medical condition while on a cane especially in the scene when he tried stealing Michael's tuppence, he almost passed out two times while Uncle Albert is probably more young and healthy and laughing didn't cause any problems for him especially since he was laughing for three days floating in the air as Bert mentioned from 0:56-0:58.

Once you know that Uncle Albert is the voice of the Mad Hatter from the Alice in Wonderland cartoon you cannot help but see this as a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, with Bert as the March Hare, and either Mary or Jane (and to a lesser degree Michael) as Alice.

Well, the wire scenes (which were mostly long shots) were done with the sodium vapor process (nowadays known as green screen) pioneered by Ub Iwerks for Walt's Alice Comedies, but for the closeups, more practical effects were done like having the actors going up and down on a teeter-totter.

I think the smartest thing for Mary Poppins to do would've been to either just let the continuous & contagious laughing run its natural course until something Sad catches their eyes, ears, memories, or thoughts or she should've just simply said something sad like it's time to go home & puts them back on solid ground.

I’d laugh forever if I thought I could fly. He’s an old man. What’s the worst thing that can happen? He dies laughing? Gimmi a break. With so many people dying of suicide and depression, let the guy be happy. Just always confused me as a kid.

I agree. I remember end of the of the film, Mr. Dawes Sr. died at the end of the film for laughing and floating in the air after hearing the joke from George Bank's which was "a wooden leg named Smith." Also, not only was too much laughter fatal (as you mentioned) but, maybe another reason why Mr. Dawes Sr. died of laughing was because, he was getting very old and died from old age.

I love this song. But it always makes me cry when I hear it. It's because this song came on during a very sad time in my life and I tried cheering up by singing this song and it's lyrics but I was actually crying during the laughing parts. In that sense, the chorus lyrics sound more like a person in denial and forcing themselves to be happy during a sad time. Still love this song though.

My boyfriend and I just last week were talking about this song and about Uncle Albert himself. What’s his story? Is it like Encanto, where he’s the estranged black sheep of the Poppins family? Is he using laughter to cover up trauma of some kind? It’s never made clear.

I wonder if Uncle Albert was outside laughing, he would float up very high in the sky and would constantly laugh going up and up and up being unknown if he would reach outer space. Perhaps the only reason he stopped floating up soon because the ceiling stopped him from constantly floating up. However, I'm guessing this laughing and floating up is because Mary Poppins is around which causes magic in the neighborhood and if Mary Poppins is not around, people could still laugh without floating up.
@afriendofbean11 жыл бұрын
