Exactly, I watched this movie for the first time 2 nights ago and it was nothing like I expected. It was like a true horror movie with how dark and twisted it got. For similar themes you should look further back in time, because recent horror is just boring cliché crap that looks all the same and tries to make you scared of either technology or old memes. I can say that this movie ACTUALLY made me scared. It doesn't have the typical corny jumpscares that most modern day "horror" films have. But rather, this movie is more so of a physiological horror. Everything from the film's score (music soundtrack), from the eerie, grey, dull, harsh atmosphere of the film's setting. Seeing the conditions in which they are living in and how harsh life is for them on top of their inevitable demise, is what I found to be things that stand out to me in this film that make it a TRUE horror movie. If anyone hasn't watched this movie yet, you're missing out! It's a movie well worth your time, trust me.

flex luthor He wasn’t. I looked up the movie’s transcript. He mistakes this conversation between William and Katherine: “KATHERINE I want to be home. 67. WILLIAM Thou wilt be home by candle-time tomorrow. KATHERINE In England. - WILLIAM KATHERINE Will, I... I also have a confession to make: WILLIAM is still. KATHERINE (CONT’D) I never wished to be a shrew to thee. I have become as Job’s wife, I know it, but since Sam, since... My heart has turned to stone. (KATHERINE swells, but keeps her emotions in check) ) I had dreamed once - twas when I was of Thomasin’s years - that I was with Christ upon earth. I was so very near him and in many tears for the assurance of the pardon of my sins and was so ravished with his love towards me, I thought it far exceeding the affection of the kindest husband. The impression of it was so deep in my heart, when I waked, my pillow had turned to tears. - WILLIAM KATHERINE And, since Samuel disappeared, I have such a sad weakness of faith that I cannot shake it. I cannot see Christ’s help as near. I pray and pray but I cannot . . . I fear I cannot ever feel that same measure of love again. WILLIAM (curt) Thou shalt have of it in heaven.” What she means is that someone named Job has a wife that’s a shrew, and she has become like that woman, after losing Samuel. Her confession is that she no longer feels close to god and fears she never will again.

Love needs to be given unconditionally. This movie shows (albeit to an extreme and unrealistic level) how being puritanical can push others to evil. Do not falter yourself, but offer a hand. Do not turn to evil deeds yourself, but never turn from others so long as help is possible. Strange that such a movie can have any message what-so-ever, stranger still that it is a Christian one.
@chidorispark27226 жыл бұрын
To be honest this wasn't a really in depth explanation. It didn't delve deep enough in the smaller components that viewers witness as the movie progresses. For example, the hare that we see repeatedly throughout the movie, is it a familiar? Or when Caleb discovered the witch in the wood, what did she actually do to him to cause him to die, did she feed on his soul or something? Also the scene where the mother sees the illusions of Caleb and her baby, Caleb asks if she would read him a book, was that just a random question or was it the book of souls, because her behavior completely changed the next morning. I need answers this movie was awesome af, but I need more information.
@mirabellaolson64105 жыл бұрын
The rabbit was a lure by the witch because they were hungry. She turned into a deity just like (vampires turn into bats or rats). So they'd follow it. When it appeared in the barn it was bloody because the white goat was suckled by the witch and that is why the goats blood came out of the teat after that. The woman at the green door was probably the old hag after drinking/bathing in the baby's blood, and she probably made him come to her even tho he was fighting it. Then they did some ritual like poison apple, and ritual and get him to go home and spread the bad vibes to the rest. The mother was a bit off after all her sagas and was mesmerized by the return of the silver cup and seeing the baby, ( which was orchestrated as the power of this entity got stronger with each kill) so the book just added the things together. All in all, the father lost all his respect and power after leading the family away from the group. He lost his dignity and the wife and kids were preying upon him. When he realized he could do nothing to make them happy, he gave up. His mistake of course was teaching them all to embrace sin and not being humble enough to deserve Christ's blessing. That was the frosting on the cake. But that was how many thought back then, and some still do now.

I've always noticed that every young girl, or at least almost every young girl, develops an interest in witchcraft at some point. Even if it's the sparkly Disney version, most young girls want to be magic. They want to mix potions and crush insects and sacrifice lizards (i worked at a preschool, it got weird y'all) and cast spells. Idk why this is but my opinion is that when you're little and everyone tells u the typical "girls should be clean/quiet/well behaved/dress like this etc." and then u see a witch, a woman capable of turning anyone who tells her that into a frog, that just looks hella attractive
@indigometanoist64756 жыл бұрын
Witchcraft is actually the worship of Nature. Praying in church on Sunday is the same exact thing as casting a spell in a coven, just different names for the practice. Hollywood's depiction of witches only shows the EXTREME spectrum of witches back then. We all practice magick! ✨

david hewitt She didn’t have an affair. She confesses to not feeling close to god as she did before losing Sam. She had hit her husband and makes the remark she has become a shrew, like Job’s wife. I looked up the movie’s transcript: “KATHERINE I want to be home. 67. WILLIAM (silence) Thou wilt be home by candle-time tomorrow. KATHERINE In England. - WILLIAM (silence) KATHERINE Will, I... - WILLIAM (silence) KATHERINE And, since Samuel disappeared, I have such a sad weakness of faith that I cannot shake it. I cannot see Christ’s help as near. I pray and pray but I cannot . . . I fear I cannot ever feel that same measure of love again. WILLIAM (curt) Thou shalt have of it in heaven.”

@Gromph Baenre naw, the baby was definitely Kathrine and Williams. There's a good amount of dialog talking about it. Off the top of my head I'm pretty certain the dad refers to Sam(the baby) as Calebs brother, and the mother says something about Thomasin losing her brother. and when William is trying to console Kathrine he saying something about how even though they lost Sam they were still blessed to have 4 children without any problems.

I just wanted to personally thank you for actually offering an explanation and interpretation of the ending and not just another summery/review like most other supposed "ending explained" video's do. Job very well done.
@Len1246 жыл бұрын
You've given a very literal interpretation of the film (which may very well be the correct one), but I sort of took it to imply that the events and motivations were ambiguous, at best, and open to interpretation. Some of the scenes, as you said, showed the characters misinterpreting or deliberately deceiving each other and seemed to imply that the supernatural elements may have been the result of paranoia and hallucination. The atmosphere created by a combination of zealotry and living on the border between the most remote outpost of Christendom and a dark, primordial forest populated by 'heathens', acts as a crucible for the type of collective madness that leads to historical tragedies like the Salem Witch-trials. Colonial New England is like a physical manifestation of the divide between God and Satan, good and evil, the known and unknown, the secure past and the threatening future, and the precarious position one is in when they skirt that boundary. Also, William mentions the 'blight' that's killing their corn, and one of the interpretations for the mass hysteria around the witch trials of New England is the effects of ergot poisoning; a fungus containing an alkaloid related to LSD that infects cereal grain crops. It can cause hallucinations, obviously, as well as seizures and glossolalia.

Super old comment but I like to think the paranormal activity franchise and conjuring franchise does, too. Very similar concepts. It’s also my head canon that the Blair witch is, in fact, Thomasin and the town is near where they settled in the 1600s.

@@chrishealton3830 The timing of your comment is uncanny! I was speaking about this very subject just last night at work! We were discussing movies that we thought could share the same universe, and I told him that I thought The Witch and Hereditary took place in the same universe, and I also updated my idea and included The Blair Witch Project. It's pretty cool that we had a similar idea! 🙂 Just for fun, here are the ideas I had. In my head canon, Walter Hill's The Warriors is kind of a prequel to John Carpenter's Escape from New York, and Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven is the spiritual final chapter in Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy. William Munny is the Man with No Name. Take care!

The VVitch ties with John Carpenter's The Thing as my favorite horror film of all time. It's an absolute masterpiece from start to finish and one that I derive something new out of with each viewing. Speaking of The Thing I've said before that the two films are actually quite similar despite their settings. Both feature a small ensemble cast; both movies take place in a secluded area pretty much cut off from the rest of the world; both movies deal very strongly with the subjects of distrust and paranoia; finally both films deal with an enemy that is relatively unseen in it's true form throughout the movie. I'm loving this channel. Keep up the good work.

This film is amazing I love that it shows what puritans thought of witches While most witches are pagan or neutral on faith im sure some are satanic but the puritans and Christians and Catholics(no offense to anyone) really were radical violent people who were paranoid and killed those of different faiths and beliefs.. Some are still like that but besides that the film really shows the horrific side of like you said religious oppression and depicted horrific witches and ect. And yeah I love this film!

the film's major flaw was it showed you immediately that the witch(s) presence was real. The film would have been more suspenseful if they kept it ambiguous whether or not they were victims of a witch. If you think back about the film and take out all the scenes showing the witch(s) it would have been a lot more spookier.

Actually that's not true, it's never made clear the witches are real. I only watched the popular movie The Witch (2015) recently, at the recommendation of a friend, marveling at the story written and directed by the same director of O Farol (2019), Robert Eggers. To my surprise, it is, in my view, a reactionary production for replacing witches with the medieval pecha of terribly demonic creatures. Another frightening approach to this work, averse to women and even moralistic, is theocentrism, pointing out deviant behaviors of unwavering faith in God as satanic manifestations. I was wondering what made a lot of people get on their knees in the face of this modest production in both special effects and content? I came to the conclusion that it must have been witchcraft, promoted by competent marketers. To start the work, which cost 4 million dollars and yielded ten times more, was sold, in bold letters, as a winner at the renowned Sundance Festival. However, it does not hurt to inform that the award was not for the best film, but for the debutant, Robert Eggers, who won the honor for best director. Even so, the “Sundance” label undoubtedly helped with marketing at the box office and gave Eggers a legion of fans and followers, who treat The Witch as one of the best films of the decade. Exaggerations aside, I liked the suspense scenes more, since there are no scares, and the feeling of disgust and disgust, especially for the use of children in demonic scenes. The cast is in tune, highlighting the beautiful young Anya Taylor-Joy, and it is worth mentioning the photograph (Jarin Blaschke, The Lighthouse) and the costumes. The downside of A Bruxa, as I have already written, is the apparent reinforcement, in the preconditioned heads that feed political and religious fascism, of the unique truth, based on outdated, medieval dogmas, used to demonize liberated women and call them witches, witches or even accusing them of using children for satanic rituals, as in the plot. The abuses manifested on social networks are there to confirm this thesis. Something similar is already being done today by radical preachers who indoctrinate with The Old Testament (and not with the New) to scare and manipulate believers, and make fun of and even encourage punishment for those who think differently.

Tomison, Caleb, and the Father William were the most likable characters. William was very interesting as he admits to his own stubbornness and even though his anger led him to be wrathful to his children, you can tell he still loved Tomison despite the accusations from her mother and siblings.

What about this? The family actually doesn't go on well; in fact they're all starving to death. First the malnourished infant. Then the son, fed infected or poisoned food accidentally. After the girls starve in the barn, the father kills himself so that his wife and renaining daughter might survive a while longer. The mother gives the last of her food to her daughter, symbolized by the daughter having no choice but to "kill" her mother. All of this has led her to go insane; racked by guilt and starvation, she twists all of this into the story we just saw before dying and flying away, the black goat representing death.

This movie was a breath of fresh air for the "scary" movie genre. It was incredibly well executed and is captivating as long as you are prepared to watch. Don't expect worn out jump-scares and overplayed themes from The VVitch (The Witch), as this isn't your typical Friday-night scary movie. I don't know if high-class horror is a thing, but if it is, The VVitch (The Witch) easily takes that title. Every aspect of this movie exudes tantalizing aspects of history and folklore that were clearly and intentionally crafted together to give the viewer an overall sense of looming fear and constant nervousness. Overall, this is a beyond excellent and wonderfully made scary movie that easily lands the #2 spot on my top 5 scary movie list. As a self-proclaimed scary movie connoisseur, you can be assured that I recommend this movie to other friends who have a taste for the darker side of film. I recommend that anyone who enjoys darker movies to give this film a chance. Put the kids to bed, put your phone down, get comfortable, and enjoy a delightfully dark trip into the nearly-forgotten past. You won't regret it!
