In a previous interview with Ranbir on Film Companion, Anupama discussed the issue of misogyny in movies. Ranbir asked her how to pronounce the word misogynist and further claimed that he wouldn't do such roles in future because they go against his value system. 5 years later he did a 180 🥳

I have a problem with lies regarding Ranjeet Nalwa Shalwa and halwa. Sikhs were colonized by the British for over 150 years, but Afghans defeated British. Sikhs have been always state beneficiaries of the British and has serviced them throughout. Sikhs are the reason behind British colonization of South Asia. They took help ( soldiers, guns, bombs, telescopes, Maps ) from British to invade Hazara and uzbik ( singers and dancers) region of Afghanistan. Within 7 years Pashtuns/Pathans got together and kicked injured ranjett back to lahore . Nalwa was beheaded in jamord by Dost Mohammad. Afghan history and museums tell a different story but since they were never colonized by the British and never had British given cinemas, printing press, historians, railways, English schools, trained army, ports, parliament , radio etc, their version of history is not known.

Why do an interview when one knows what SRV would say?! It's quite evident that he made this movie out of the unreasonable angst he carries against the critics who did not liked Kabir Singh?! Just like everyone has artistic freedom to express what they want so do critics have freedom to dissent! Rather SRV should have taken the criticism in his stride and showed that he has matured as a story teller who believes that violence always ends up in destruction but he just had to go ahead and make a movie wherein the sky is not the limit for portraying misogyny.

What was most disappointing for me was that the father son relationship really was not explored as deeply as how the trailer had implied. Actually, when you think about it, the romantic interest of Zoya is quite required, but the romanticism ruined the feeling of storytelling in the 2nd half. If he didn't ever meet Zoya, he wouldn't have a heart and would die in the first half only. The story would've ended right there and then. The exploration in the 2nd half was quite interesting when Bobby appeared, but had less screen time. If they could've focused just about more of his character, then the audience would've been engaged even more.

All comments about flawed characters fail to understand the nuance of wht the review is about. American psycho or Joker are about flawed characters with the understanding that what they are doing is wrong but do it anyway, because they stopped giving a Damn about their morality. Here, I assume the character and director truly believe and glorify one's flaws as charismatic character traits. This just reinforces people with these flaws to look at themselves as heros.

Joker has a scene of him dancing on the steps to upbeat music, and dancing in front of a mirror as if to imply there is beauty in him. They also keep bringing up his mental health and society as justification for his actions. If Animal was glorifying its character then Joker was too.

@dixienormous8571 but Joker shows him getting stiffed by the society. The staircase scene is when he breaks free from society and wants his revenge. We get to experience the joy he feels when taking his revenge, but we all know he isn't doing the right thing. But here there is no nuance...he becomes angry from daddy issues and takes it out on everyone around him. and they show it in a glorifying way.

In Hollywood movies or shows they literally show the gore scenes. Here the case is different. The director didnt want to show the face of the person being killed and only showed the blood which takes away the essence of what the director wanted to show. There are definitely people who surely might have seen movies or shows which showcases extreme violence and it makes you uncomfortable. In this movie only two scenes both involving Bobby deol looked gore. But from a Bollywood movie perspective the action scenes looked great.

Oh come on! Hindi cinema has produced brilliant films like Satya, Vaastav, Salam Bombay, Dev D and more...we understand violence and flawed characters! But Kabir Singh and Animal are just below-par extravaganzas meant to tittilate without much matter. No problem with making such movies if you want to, it's a free country. Just let the director not pretend like he is doing something iconic and path-breaking. His parting line from his earlier interview with Anupama shows his level of maturity. He is bound to make a 3rd shit-fest soon, just to piss people/critics off, rather than stopping to think or even attempt to evaluate, why the criticism.

If it was intended to be a film about a misogynistic, unhinged and a violent character, I think the filmmaker wins. If it was intended to shock the audience with how a story can proceed in unexpected ways, the filmmaker wins. If it was to show how a toxic father-son love can become so central for the making of such a character, the filmmaker wins. If it was, let us assume, to piss-off critics who look at every film from the limits of their personal moral lens, the filmmaker wins! And of course, if it was just to titillate the audience and force them into the theatres for box-office alone, the filmmaker clearly wins!

The movie is about a problematic man. Throughout the movie all the characters in the movie acknowledge and point out that Ranbir’s character has problems. His issues with anger, misogyny etc. are constantly pointed out to him throughout the movie. It is also shown that he had developed these issues due to experiences in his life. I am not sure then why “critics” have to only point towards the problematic character of Ranbir. There are numerous real-life incidents where women have committed crimes towards other men. If SRV (or Zoya Akhtar) made movie about or inspired by such incidents, would it be necessary and/or alright just to focus on the misandry part of the movie? May be next time SRV should make a movie about a 40-something illiterate gangster who somehow manages to get himself in to the top most medical institute (because the principal of the institute didn’t want his daughter to marry the gangster because he was lying about his profession), disrupts everyone’s life around him, gets his way using threats, violence & lies and in the end almost manages to become a medical doctor.

Animal 's teaser and trailer clearly shows that its a violent adult film, and why did FC expect to see something else in the the movie,? The film did serve what was promised in the trailer but FC just saw misogyny and missed everything else ? Agreed there is misogyny in the movie but every character in the movie is opposed to Ranbir's character behaviour...its not glorified..no one in his family loves or appreciates him for his actions in the movie. All the powerful gangster/violent movies in the world are at some level misogynistic about how they treat women, but none have been panned like Animal, that should say something about what kind of opinion do these criticizers have about Sandeep when reviewing Animal....personal or professional?

I have noticed a trend in woman-oriented movies where men don’t seem to have significant roles. While striving for gender equality is important, true equality should involve the balanced representation of both genders, not the diminishment of one to elevate the other. Films like "Animal" should be seen simply as movies rather than being scrutinized for not adhering to societal expectations. If filmmakers are not given the liberty to explore diverse narratives freely, it will be challenging to produce high-quality films. Equality or superiority cannot be achieved by merely criticizing or silencing; we must allow creativity to flourish for good movies to emerge.

In John Wick, the hero actually has morales...it does not matter how bad of a profession the hero is involved in but he still has morales and he is not a *mysoginist alpha male* with twisted personality and he does all the killings for his love and the dog which his love gifted him because that was everything in the world for him as it was given by his love. That was true loyalty and true definition of love so all of John Wick's actions can be justified. But Animal is different. Its not even a hero, its a psychopath villain with twisted personality and zero morales with actions that cannot be justified no matter what angle you look from plus the relationship of the main character of Animal with his own love is not even good as she is not everything in the world for him and he even cheats whenever he gets a chance, despite having KIDS with her

Rashmika's character is the voice of reason in this film, so I don't see how it hates on women. Ranbir's character is shown as ridiculously obsessive about not just his father but things like his underwear and perceived disrespect. The story mentions that Geetanjali got an acceptance to princeton and she tells ranvijay, correctly, that his unexamined feelings for his father are a disease. When ranvijay crosses geetanjali's boundaries, she retaliates. She even has some questions about ranvijay's character at the beginning of their relationship. If Sandeep wanted to glorify violence, why would he show that Ranvijay's war ultimately ends in vain?. Ironically, his name means "victor in war." Ranvijay only has a few moments where he shows vulnerability and insight. Geetanjali shows these traits throughout the film. Yes, the women in abrar's life are not given screentime, but the movie shows how everyone is disgusted with abrar's behavior. Because unchecked aggression is stupid and regressive. The middle of the movie did not have great writing but the other parts did a great job of showing how unhealed trauma can lead a man into violence, not only towards women but everyone around him. When you see Ranvijay cry, you can tell he's a very fragile person who(falsely) thinks he can gain love through self-sacrifice. On the other hand, Geetanjali has the wisdom to accept and declare that her man is losing it

The way Anupama defended Kabir Singh as just two mad people in mad love, while Sucharita was facing all the trolls by herself. Somehow this time Anupama’s critique is more blunt and well critical than Sucharita who is refusing to take the bait as she says. Regardless, interesting takes from both, and a hilarious one from Anupama.

@short_sorcerer hahaha I think you missed the point of the entire movie then. And that's the difference.

@@Gouri_like_sorry haven't seen Animal but I somewhat agree with you. People ofen reduce their movies, especially Tarantino's to mere violence while completely missing the biggest strength of his movies - screenplay and dialogues. These two aspects can change the entire narrative of the movie and that's what Tarantino's films are all about. He introduces violence and controversial elements in his while also makes them self-conscious enough to avoid glorification of such stuff. In short, people have very basic view of cinema in this country.

I don't understand why it seems that it is incumbent upon Indian cinema to preach. The last time I checked, cinema, regardless of its ethnicity, is meant to entertain and for its art to be appreciated. And Animal does just that. It's true that if you're expecting a run-of-the-mill Bollywood movie where the "hero" is larger than life, and the "heroine" must sound and look like a "Bollywood heroine", and the "villains" are born villain, then yea, this movie is not for you. This movie is rather about an ordinary man with an extraordinary grade of affection and adoration towards his father. And just like any of us, he's got some issues too. It's a pure family-vendetta action drama. As a filmmaker, is it so blasphemous to be inclusive and narrate a story with characters portraying actual human shades? For all that talk of misogyny and feminism, did we fail to notice how realistically and maturely Rasmika's and Ranbir's relationship has been portrayed? Can't we appreciate the fact that the movie has used music to bring out the art and fervour of not just emotional scenes but also the action scenes? How refreshing of an idea is that! And finally, Bobby Deol. I never knew the guy had so much talent in him. He doesn't have a word of dialogue in the movie, and yet, he hits the ball out of the park with his angelic-demon expressions. Kudos, to Sandeep Reddy Vanga for having the bold chutzpah to choose to make a movie that speaks the truth that all humans do have grey shades, rather than play safe and rake in the moolah.
