The idea that what’s on script isn’t always what ends up on screen. As a writer director, I have worries of the final draft, simply because I’m afraid it isn’t good enough and seeing it as the final look of what the film will look like. 🙌🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Yeah, I never understood why Hollywood seems to do so many re-shoots. If they aren't confident enough with their script / cast / etc. Why start production in the first place? and if the studios decide to trust a filmmaker with the responsibility of directing a film for them... Why not give them full support to complete their work? Joker seems like the best of both worlds. They had a Hollywood budget while keeping their creative independence. I hope to see more of that in the future.

There are re-shoots to override the vision of the filmmaker and there are reshoots to allow the filmmaker to make an existing scene better. I think the later is fine as the studio is supporting the vision. Sometimes the scenes in the script might not translate well on screen, failing to elicit the reaction they would have imagined originally. In case of Joker, most of the script pre-shoot was discarded and written as they shot the movie. Which is insane. I guess the Todd Phillips must have had an epiphany after seeing Joaquin Phoenix's performance. Here is a quote from wikipedia, *According to Beetz, Phillips rewrote the entire script during production; because Phoenix lost so much weight for the film, there would not be an opportunity for reshoots. She recalled, "we would go into Todd's trailer and write the scene for the night and then do it. During hair and makeup we'd memorize those lines and then do them and then we'd reshoot that three weeks later.* There is no one rule.

Saravana Subramanian That’s exactly my point, you don’t need to wait till you’re in the editing room 3 months after principal production to realize that something isn’t working and needs to be re shot. You can tell right there - on set - when something is off and that’s when it needs to be fixed. It’s pretty smart to schedule a few extra weeks for additional stuff but I don’t think that counts as reshoots because it’s still part of the principal photography - even if they’re redoing full scenes. It’s just smart planning. There’s a say I’ve heard on set so many times and goes: “we need to run, time is our enemy”... and the best response I’ve heard: “time is NOT our enemy, it’s our friend... your lack of planning is our enemy”. Also strange to me: movies that shoot so much that they end up with a 4 hour long first cut... and are forced to cut important stuff from the story in order to make an “acceptable” theatrical cut.

@@Gorrittismos I see your point now. I incorrectly assumed that you meant all re-shoots. Re-shoots during principal photography is acceptable and time for it should be included in the original schedule.

@@Gorrittismos What you think is easy and clearly visible right then and there obviously is a bit off and that's why we have reshoots and mediocre films. And even though besides the performance of Joaquin I didn't like this Joker adaptation, being able to do the whole film without any need for reshoot is great filmmaking considering the end result.

Please Lawrence, try to talk to Todd and Joaquin and convince them to shoot a sequel! Lol. I honestly LOVE this movie. I saw it 6 times in the theaters, and bought it on digital cause I couldn't wait for the Blue ray. And then bought the steel back Blue Ray. Of course....lol. Absolutely brilliant film, and the choices Lawrence and Todd made for the movie were literally perfect in my opinion. Just brilliant!

It’s so DAMN VALUABLE to see a story about no reshoots. WHY? Not everyone works well on repetitions. The goal is to be properly prepared. What ever that takes, equals wisdom. I’ve herd Anthony Hopkins does 1-3 takes and never more because the key emotions for him and those like him then get released and the work loses its emotional content even if it mechanically is adequate. I’m not advocating all work this way with their art to be “edgy” or something, but rather for the slimmer faction that requires this to be validated and trust their process. A process that does not conform to the blank slate of many others doing high repetitions. Analogy: Snipes don’t do many shots when on target but machine gunners do... and both of them is doing their job correctly. Know your self and systematize that weather it be low, medium or high repetition type of activities. Know thy self and “that truth” shall set you free.
