I love how the storytelling comes first and the technical stuff is used to support the story.

Most useful part of this video for me was the importance of location that Lawrence described, specifically touring to different locations to nail the feel of a scene and the movie, as a whole. Finding inspiration and a certain of authenticity in the movie's setting is allows film makers and storytellers to create the world audiences visit. Watching a story can be interesting, but being immersed into the setting is what allows people to feel like they are LIVING a story- and that's what makes great art!

Her questions are so good, that one about the difference in a familiar or unfamiliar director was great.

Interesting how this movie is a test among YT film reviewers; the people who enjoy the movie tend to be those who are more experienced with real life squalor and general world issues, whereas the people who think the movie’s a pointless slog tend to be those who never leave their bedroom. I’m pleasantly surprised that Film Courage folk are sorta sticking up for the movie.

I totally agree with your comment. It seems like a lot of people who dislike the movie simply don't or can't empathise with the character, whereas the people who like it are willing to empathise with his suffering. I would guess that most of the criminals living today could've become upstanding citizens, had they grown up in a different environment and exposed to different things. The message I got from the movie was this: if we treated people better, had a better health care system and protected children from abuse, there might be less damaged people committing crimes. Not to mention that we'd have more people who'd be happier.

moe5555 - the thing that’s challenging, I guess, is how the movie spins what is Arthur’s self-implosion into somehow being a victory through presentation alone. He still ends up in jail, he still ends up friendless, even in a crowd, and he stills ends up alone; but he’s convinced himself that it’s the real him when it’s not. But everything in the music and presentation is like Joker’s psyche trying to insist that this is fine. It’s an interesting way to end a tragedy; but it’s definitely not something i want to show to my little brother who already struggles with low-empathy who probably would miss that aspect and take it at face value. I admit, a lot of how I see the ending is actually in my head; but it works for me.
