Brad Rushing began working with Roger Corman's Concorde/New Horizons film studio which afforded him some of his first feature film opportunities as Director of Photography where he learned valuable skills.
After a number of years concentrating on indie feature films Brad began to shoot high end music videos photographing award-winning, iconic clips for artists like Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, Lionel Richie, Nelly and Eminem. Brad's ground-breaking work on Moby's "We Are All Made Of Stars" won an MTV Video Music Award "Moonman" for Best Cinematography in a Video, and many of the other music videos he shot have won awards such as VMAs, MVPAs and Grammys for Best Video. Brad also won a Canadian Society of Cinematographers Award for Best Cinematography in a Video for the Alsou video "Always On My Mind."
Brad's most recent work is the feature film "A California Christmas" which filmed in Petaluma, CA in July 2020, one of the first film productions to start under stringent COVID-19 safety protocols. The film debuted on a major streaming platform for the 2020 holiday season and was number one on Netflix for one week straight.

Stuff we use:
CAMERA - This is the camera we have used to film 90+% of our interviews (over 200 interviews and counting) It continues to be our workhorse - amzn.to/2u66V1J
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

As an aspiring artist, this Is one of my biggest fears. Of " making it" and not reaping the benefits. But as an artist, I learned to do art for myself and to be humble about my expectations. Really good interview!

Well said. I’ve always been wildly ambitious about my art, believing that every next thing will be a ‘hit’... Repeated disappointment has taught me to be modest and create for myself. Still, I think a part of me will always be like that... I don’t think success will ever take me by surprise.

“Creating a life that reflects your values and satisfies your soul is a rare achievement. In a culture that relentlessly promotes avarice and excess as the good life, a person happy doing his own work is usually considered an eccentric, if not a subversive. Ambition is only understood if it’s to rise to the top of some imaginary ladder of success. Someone who takes an undemanding job because it affords him the time to pursue other interests and activities is considered a flake. A person who abandons a career in order to stay home and raise children is considered not to be living up to his potential - as if a job title and salary are the sole measure of human worth. You’ll be told in a hundred ways, some subtle and some not, to keep climbing, and never be satisfied with where you are, who you are, and what you’re doing. There are a million ways to sell yourself out, and I guarantee you’ll hear about them. To invent your own life’s meaning is not easy, but it’s still allowed, and I think you’ll be happier for the trouble.” - Bill Watterson

I believe success in the external world to be irrelevant; the success I care is the one I get from writing and drawing everyday. Psychological freedom, learning, challenge after challenge. Solitude is bliss; I may be too cynical - but people suck, and that's sad.

Sometimes, the more successful an artist becomes, the more insecure they become. For example, if my latest project doesn’t turn out as well as my previous project, does that mean that I’ve regressed in ability? Worse still, what if I never really had any talent to start with? A lot of writers have these fears. Personally, I do receive an emotional high from being praised, even though I know it isn’t healthy. When I receive criticism, my emotions become drained and distorted. Artists often get too emotionally attached to their creations, treating them like children. Of course, I mainly create for myself, but there’s still a drive, an almost irresistible yearning, to share my creations with the world. Whether this is a good or bad thing, I cannot say.

Such a hard-to-swallow pill, huh? I kinda relate with the idea of not being in the clouds regarding your expectations ( ofc, it does help that I´ve no succeded as a director nor such so far) while at the same time, as an artist, the "hopes and dreams" for a better... or at least a more interesting life is what ignites my creativity. Necessity is the mother of invention or so they say. I DO want better stuff in my life, therefore, I keep pushing myself forward. Thanks for the video.

@Joseph Rockford @Gari Hs Tell this to my bank account, folks. This is the great illusion. So much "success" is more "on paper" than in the tangible way most of us hope and dream of.

@@BradRushing Granted, the achievements won´t pay the bills. Who wouldn´t want a great hit with endless royalties? On the other hand, you must have at least some great anecdotes/memories out of your whole journey as a director. That´s a life worth living for imo. Maybe the real success was the friends we made along the way. Btw, thanks for sharing some of those stories with us on this channel. Much appreciated.

I think at this point in my life I would settle for anyone to give any of my scripts a shot for nothing. I would just hand it off and say, just make it happen, man... I just wanna see it on the screen. That's it. No money, pat on the back, fame, don't even need to give me credit -- nothing but for my story to be seen. I'd settle for that in a heartbeat.

I mostly work with horror projects, but dramas are stretching legs for me if you will. I would love to try and adapt one of your scripts in a short film! We can email details any further!

i hope to be an artist that has work that makes people either think or happy and somehow launches me to rockstar status. not saying if that doesn't happen and i just "do well" that i wouldnt be happy. but that is what i think ultimately will push me. rockstar status is not what it is ALL about though. Foo Fighters would tell you they write music because they have to, its who they are. it has to be who you are (whatever it is) to have a chance of getting you to "the top"

Expectations. You work your first film and it’s exciting, you work your twentieth film with a huge name, people see it and know it, and it turns out pretty good, but it’s never enough. Those expectations just can’t be met and it’ll almost break your heart.
