This entire scene tears me up now just as it did when I was a teenager. Veda lost her best friend. But I feel Shelly came into their lives at just the right time. She helped Harry fall in love again. But also made him realize that he should allow Veda to be a child without laying so many adult responsibilities on her. She also taught Veda about womanhood and that she truly loved her & cared for her. She came into their lives at just the right time.

I don't think Harry made Vada "grow up," or had her do any "adult responsibilities." BUT I do think either he ignored her and he was not paying attention to what was going on in her world. For Harry, as long as she was healthy and alive that was all that was important to him. He lived and died (no pun intended lol) by his funeral parlor business and threw all of his energy into it, semi-ignoring Vada and relying on his mother to take care of her but when she got alzheimer's and his brother Phil can all do so much. Shelley was a maternal figure she needed even though at first NOT wanted, and only wanted her to be a friend. But Shelley fell in love with Harry (obviously), cared for Vada and felt welcomed by Phil and I'm sure Grandmoo would have liked her if her mind was clear NOT suffering from Alzheimer's

It was so hard to watch this movie again, as an adult. My son lost his best friend when they were in 3rd grade 😢, very suddenly from a virus. He was with him earlier in the day, same day he died. I remember the bus driver telling me my son was laying on the seat, his head where his friend used to sit next to him, crying to himself in silence. He refused to let any other kids sit with him. And when he would get sick with a typical virus himself, he thought he was going to die so I would sleep with him on the couch. He was somewhat of a hypochondriac growing up not only because of the sudden loss, but because the day his friend died the boy was complaining to my son about cramping in his hands. He replayed that day so many times thinking he could have saved him somehow. The boys fingers were stuck / cramped but they still did their secret handshake before departing that day not knowing it was their last moment together. The school counselor helped my son a little, but looking back I wish I could have done more for him.

@@janderson9477 I know, Thomas J. didn't know that he was going to die from the bees especially since the minister said at the funeral, "one thing that bothers me is why did God choose to take this boy from us but God has chosen Thomas J. for a good reason." The last thing that was known was that Thomas J.'s mom asked Thomas J. if he made his bed before allowing Thomas J. go out and play with Vada.

I remember watching this movie when I was 10 and had just moved far away from home where my best friend in the whole world lived. He was a boy I had known my whole life because our parents were friends, we grew up together and were inseparable. It was also that first puppy love, and losing him ripped my heart out. This scene in the movie really hurt. We stayed in touch during many years through letters and later sms, emails, but eventually went our separate ways and each got married. Although I love my husband, I feel a part of me died when I moved away because I lost my one true soulmate.

I just watched this movie for the first time. I love that the movie's theme of dealing with loss and change comes full circle. From the girl using the song to cope with seeing a dead body, to blaming herself for her mother's death at childbirth, to being unable to accept her father getting remarried, to even the little moment when she's afraid to lose the fish she got at the carnival and not wanting to replace him. It all culminates with the loss her friend, and her finally accepting her new family. I also think of her becoming friends with one of the girls who taunted her (and upon rewatch, you notice she was the girl who was straddling behind the other bullies), was a nice touch. I think this might be a contender for one of my favorite movies.

Such a bold movie, especially at the time. It's like it's specifically designed to be upsetting and that hadn't really been explored that much in mainstream media at that point in time. Scary, yes. Disturbing, yes. Upsetting moments in movies, yes, but not like this. This part of the movie IS the movie. It's all anyone thinks about when they hear the name. So I take my hat off to the writers for being so gutsy. Like it or not, it's brave.

Veda's little heart was so crushed when Thomas J died the way be did and then became even more heartbroken when her favorite teacher announced that he was getting married because Veda was too young to understand that there were boundaries between teachers & students. By the way, that was a paper nest so those were white faced hornets that came after Thomas J. I wonder if any of the adult cast members from Home Alone 1 and 2 have seen this movie.

Even years before this film came out, I had a fear of bees. And I *STILL* do to this very day. Every time this scene comes on, I have to take the brace position (cover my face, close my eyes, look away from the TV screen, etc.). Hell, I remember when Animal Planet was showing a documentary of Asian Giant Hornets back in 2020, I noticed what they were talking about, and I could hear Zangief from the 1994 Street Fighter film saying, "QUICK! Change the channel!" in my head. And that I did.

@@jonjahr3403 Are you allergic to bee stings? I've been stung three times by a bee (possibly a wasp), and haven't had an allergic reaction whatsoever.
