The ending is one of the most beautiful shots ever. I love him sitting at the crossroads looking at his next move and wondering which direction to go. It leaves it all up to interpretation. For the island footage (most of the movie), every line of dialog was looped and every single sound was sampled or created by a foley artist. This is because the actual sound of lapping waves was overpoweringly loud.

Surprised no one has mentioned this, but on the DVD there's a hidden easter egg if you punch in a cheat code in your remote and it's the logo on that package, and when clicked on it's Tom Hanks revealing that the package is "a solar powered, water proof, satellite phone"
@Theomite3 жыл бұрын
It's a funny gag, but ridiculous when you consider that the package was a gift sent by a woman to her boyfriend overseas living in an urban environment where access to phones would be ever-present and long-distance calling plans were ubiquitous. I remember the commercials that were all over TV at the time.

The phone "theory" has always been a joke (the Super Bowl ad) or sarcasm from anyone involved making it. In the penultimate script it's the redhead sending her husband (Cowboy at the beginning of the film) two bottles of homemade salsa hoping he'll come back to her.

On the big screen with the theater surround sound, that plane crash sequence was totally immersive and terrifying. He was actually fortunate that the waves prevented him from leaving the island on the rubber raft, because he would've died without having the preparation and survival skills that he developed.
@maximillianosaben3 жыл бұрын
With the exception of the scene with the fire on the beach, all of the nighttime scenes on the island were filmed during the day but added filters to make it look like night. Tom Hanks took a year off to lose weight for the latter half of the movie. In that time, Robert Zemeckis filmed another movie called What Lies Beneath, starring Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer. He used the same crew from this movie to ensure that they all had work and were available to return after the hiatus.
@Nick.j013 жыл бұрын
Apparently they stopped shooting the movie for a year after the plane crash so that Tom could loose a bunch of weight and actually look like he’d been stranded on an island
@sage79803 жыл бұрын
I remember the progress of him losing weight and growing his hair out and every picture of him was a debate on if he was sick because he and anyone connected to the film weren’t saying it was for a film. Fun Fact: The screenwriter for this movie had to strand himself on an isolated beach in Baja California for one week and had to find his own food, water and build shelter. During his time on the beach, he found a random volleyball washed ashore and he kept it for company. That was the inspiration for Wilson. The writer's name is William Broyles Jr. he also wrote Apollo 13.

The mail tracking sequence reminds me of the bullet tracking sequence from Lord of War (I think it was). There is no score the entire time he's there, and it only kicks back in once he sails away and looks back on the island. The director said he chose to do this to make Tom Hanks character seem even more isolated on the island, really cool idea and I think it certainly works!

Pro tip if you ever find yourself stuck on an island like this guy, light the biggest fire you can. On this island I would recommend just throwing as much wood into the fire as possible, but some islands you could light an entire section on fire. Same if your lost in the woods, light a tree on fire. The smoke will alert any first responders who will notify a fire department and they will investigate the fires.

Castaway - He was cast away, his job, his plans, his fiance, his entire concept of existence. That final scene is his rebirth. His delivery of the package is a nod to him completing his prior life and letting go of the past. The girls comment "You look lost, cowboy" and then describing where the roads before him will take him is another nod to his new life. This movie goes far deeper than just being lost on an island.

What a great film and story about something thats actually happened to people. The idea behind Wilson was the the director or writer spent time (like a week) on a secluded beach in preparation for this and after a couple days discovered a ball. They found that the need for companionship resulted in them having conversations with the ball (mostly telling sories of playing with that type of ball from their youth). As a result Wilson was included into the story.

I can only control myself and my reactions. Can’t control what happens to us. I thought it was so well done. Just trying to figure out how to open the coconuts, make fire, fish.
