Her heart beats very slowly, giving her the purple skin, so she can be a very accurate and deadly sniper. She murdered her own husband, who was an Overwatch agent, thus earning her the name 'Widowmaker'.

Since everyobe else already explained Widow's story, ill do Tracer. Lena Oxton was a test pilot for an experimental Overwatch fighter jet that could "blink" through space and time. Due to a problem in flight, she was essentially unanchored from the timeline, disappearing from the face of the earth. After she briefly reappears in our world, Winston builds her chronal accelerator (the thing on her chest) which brings her back into our world and keeps her here while she's nearby. Despite having the extreme effects of her accident prevented, Tracer can still use several of the byproducts of her accident. Among which are her blink, the short ranged teleport, and her recall, the bit where she rewinds herseld through the timeline.

Widowmaker is purple because she was experimented on (by Moira) and breathes very slowly (makes here a better sniper, I guess). Is meant to be like "going blue in the face". Bit silly, but gives her an interesting look. Can't wait to see your breakdown of the Kiriko cinematic, it's use of sound and light is some of their best (at least to me as a non-informed viewer).

She and Widow are both members of Talon, a terrorist organization that want to start ww4 or 5 or whatever they are up to in their world. They are villains despite being playable characters in the game. Technically the game isn't canon but it does reference and allude to things in the lore that the cinematics and comics and such tell.

Can you imagine watching these short films in anticipation for the release of the game? It was crazy. Completely new IP from Blizzard and they were putting out animated short films comparable in quality to Pixar's best work. EVERYONE wanted to know more about every character. The first line: "When I was a little girl, I had a fear of spiders" The last line: "When I was a little girl, I HAD a fear of spiders" The first line explains how as a kid she had a fear of spiders, but in the final line adding the emphazis of "had" to show that she no longer fears them. Instead she adopted the image of it. Her InGame name is Widowmaker just like the spider, and her helmet with all the eyes to mimic the multi-eyed arachnids.

Tracer's power is indeed temporal. Her dashing around very fast is not that she's a fast running but simply that she can adjust time for her in relation to her surroundings. So she can speed herself forward which makes it seem like she is really fast, or she can rewind a few seconds to where she was then. Backstory is in a video that is not very cinematic so probably not worth reacting to, but an agency tried to develop a new Chronofighter aircraft. She was assigned to pilot the prototype. It worked, kinda, as the plane vanished and re-appeared days later, then vanished, then re-appeared, etc. Tracer and the plane was not in sync with our time at all. Winston (the big gorilla from the previous cinematic at the museum) is really smart and managed to find a way to let her stabilize and control her temporal powers. That's what her chest-piece is. If it is destroyed, as it kinda was in the end of this cinematic, she will struggle to control her powers again until it's fixed.

Oh yeah! This one, Dragons, Reinhardt and Bastion are the top four animated shorts for Overwatch. Reinhardt and Bastion hits harder for me because of the military theme. As a vet I understand the PTSD and honor story lines of those two. As for Tracer (short version), I think she was a test pilot. Got stuck in a time warp. Big monkey saved her. She is effected by time warp and now has to wear that thing on her chest.

I miss Overwatch 1. The characters were fun, original, and these backstory shorts really added great background to them when you selected to use them in-game. A huge part of it is because the abilities you see them use in the shorts are abilities you can use in-game, making it feel much more connected to the short videos.

Then she was kidnapped, brainwashed and experimented on, that among other effects left her mostly emotionless and changed pigmentation of her skin. So now only time she feels anything even resembling satisfaction is when she kills someone.

Amélie Lacroix was the wife of an Overwatch agent Gérard Lacroix who headead anti-Talon operations. Talon kidnapped her and brainwashed her to kill her husband. It's pretty fucked up and supremely dark humor from Talon to give her the codename "Widowmaker," considering that. After murdering her husband she then returned to Talon and was experimented on further, as detailed on other comments and yours. IIRC she wasn't a countess or anything, though her family used to be French nobles centuries past, but only thing left from that was their ancestral home, Chateau Guillard, a crumbling, old castle. In some official media it has been hinted that her brainwashing has eroded somewhat over the years, as in an Overwatch Christmas comic she was shown leaving flowers and standing in front of her husband's grave, with a somewhat mournful expression.

Widowmaker has some of the best visual language in the game. The way she moves around w her grapple is a lot like a spider on a spider web. In-game, too, even the way she poses her wrist is a lot like how spider-man throws webs. Another great detail in-game is that the character used to be a ballerina, so a lot of her movements are very graceful. In particular, when she's walking around while she's looking through her scope, her character model moves her legs back and forth like a ballet dance. Also, if you look at the crosshair, there's a subtle shape of the triangles from a black widow's abdomen.

One of the things i love about this cinematic is that its also pretty well established that tracer knows she cant win the fight so all shes truely trying to do is buy manyaata time to get away instead of defeating widowmaker

Moira did a bunch of experiments on Widowmaker to slow her heart rate to make her a better sniper. Its not confirmed why shes blue but she could have cyanosis which can happen from a slow heart rate leading to low oxygen in the blood

Hey Kai, quick lore; she's purple because she can lower her heart rate so low that her skin appears purple/blue from a lack of bloodflow. Thus the slinky sneaky spider snipey sister.

The Target was an Omnic, an intelligent Machine. As is common in Sci-Fi settings there's usually a robotic uprising what humanity must try to stop and the same thing happened here. Humans built Machines, Machines rose up and war happened. The Overwatch Organization started to try to beat the Robot Wars. The remaining intelligent robots are, for obvious reasons, not looked upon favorably but prominent people try to bridge the gap between humans and machines. As The Target said, "We are all once, within the Iris" as an "We are all intelligent beings". Trying to bridge that gap and try to make man and machine able to live together without fear and hostility. "The bad guys" on the other hand likes when things are in turmoil so taking out a prominent figure like that will cause more issues. Imagine if someone killed the Dalai Lama or.. Well.. The timing for this video after what happened to a certain Presidential candidate last night is amazing xD

To clear up confusion - yes, she absolutely is a villain. Villains are playable just like heroes in Overwatch, and that allows for tons of different factions, interactions between characters before matches, etc. If you like analysing dialogue then definitely have a look at the pre-match interactions

I'm not sure about the cinematics, but in game the overwatch animations actually use 3D smear frames. So whenever a character has an animation involving really fast movement, if you go frame by frame their model is sometimes stretched and distorted to help the movement look fluid.

You're bang on with the Hong Kong style of fighting. It's much better, simply because you can see what's happening. The Hollywood style is mostly used for actors who can't do it for real. That's why Bourne is a doubly egregious case, because most of the actors can do the fighting. Some actors, especially female one in Hong Kong don't know martial arts either, but if they can dance and do the acrobatics, nobody notices. But it's hard work, most Hollywood actors can't be troubled with. There are exceptions like Keanu Reeves. There's a great video about this by Every Frame a Painting here on YT.

after the omnic crisis the world started to hate omnics (the robots) with England being one of the worse. Mondarta the some what head of the omnics after the war traveled to London to try and bring peace to between the 2 however windowmaker whos a part of Talon one of the antagonist groups was sent to take him out. Unfortunately no real explanation as for why in law, just various theories.

Every English person will tell you her accent is annoying because it is lmao, people have had that opinion since game release. It took me ages to get over it, it’s only americans who say it sounds normal because they’re used to that over-the-top portrayal of British accents. It’s like if the one portrayal of an American character they had was a redneck stereotype. it’s hard to ignore even when you’re used to it, so I imagine it’s impossible to ignore when you’re not used to it. Tracer’s accent has and always will be free game to hate on lol.

In the world of Overwatch, there are sentient machines called Omnics, which were originally created by the Omnica Corporation to bolster manufacturing and agriculture output and create a utopia for humanity. The Omnics rebelled against their human masters and the Omnic Crisis, a 2 year long war between human and machine occurred, only stopped with the assistance of the newly created Overwatch organization. This was 28 years ago. Tekhartha Mondatta (the omnic speaking here) is a Shambali monk, leader of an order that teaches coexistence with humans (both Zenyatta and Ramattra were students of his). Here he is speaking in King's Row, London, where the racist hate against omnics is still bubbling even 7 years after the King's Row Uprising, where Ramattra led an strike force of omnics to rally the city's omnic citizens to his banner against the humans, but was stopped by Overwatch. The mercenary group Talon has sent Widowmaker to take him out and stop any growing peace between humans and omnics. Even though Overwatch is disbanded (this cinematic actually takes place prior to the official cinematic at the museum), Tracer is here trying to uphold the ideals she believes in and do some good even if "official" Overwatch activity is banned. The problem is that Widowmaker is TOO good. She's Talon's best, operated on by the unscrupulous scientist Moira O'Deorain to slow her heartbeat to nearly nothing, in order for her to be the best sniper in the world (hence the bluish coloring). She considers Tekhartha Mondatta's assassination her finest kill, despite, or maybe because of, the interference from Tracer, showing off her positioning skills (which are necessary in-game too) and still able to line up the perfect shot with Tracer in the way, giving her an impossible choice: take the hit, or rewind away and fail the mission. Terran Gregory and the cinematic team continually surpass themselves, the problems with Overwatch as a game now stem from the balance team doing a very poor job of keeping things equitable for players (several of the newer heroes are quite overpowered and oppressive to play against :/ ). The cinematics are top notch, however.
