She is 33, but does act very youthful and silly and with the way everyone looks young in Overwatch (for the reasons you have mentioned, like no bags under eyes), understandable you would think she is younger. She was part of Overwatch's research division, but becomes more active in Overwatch 2.

They are definitely great at doing both action and character development. Is why I really like the Kiriko one, because it blends the two really well... but this one is definitely one of my favourites too. Very sad, but also hopeful as you mention.

Maybe making her act youthful is part of worldbuilding. She's 33 but went into cryogenic sleep for 9, so her brain still retains her 24 yo personality since she skipped all that time Just a thought I had reading your comment

Mei was already a scientist under Overwatch in the Ecopoint system, but not a field agent their ecopoint was supposed to get resupplies from Overwatch but were delayed due to a snowstorm. to bridge the gap they went into hibernation, to end when the next supplyship signaled their arrival. but that never happened because Overwatch was disbanded in the meantime, and their base was forgotten in the shutdown after Winston's recall she uses the instant-ice weapon she made here to assist in the field at release i believe she was the third or fourth youngest playable character in her early 30s? plus the 9 years on ice, so technically quite a bit older

there is a fan theory that the reason why mei lived and the others didn't MIGHT be because one of the others programed the pods to prioritize her if stuff stared to fail which would explain why she was the only survivor when it seems like the equipment and base were degrading due to the time spent unattended

Dr. Mei Ling-Zhou is actually 33 (biologically, 42 chronologically due to her cryosleep), and was part of the team at Overwatch's Ecopoint station in Antarctica, monitoring the planet's changing climate. A renowned Chinese climatologist, Winston's recall order for Overwatch has inspired her to become a hero in the aftermath of Overwatch's fall. The malfunction of her team's cryopods was likely due to the massive polar storm that hit the base, as well as just time, and she was the lucky one that survived. In-game she is an absolute fucking menace. Her cryo-blaster can hose down people at close range to freeze them solid in a couple seconds (making them easy targets for headshots), and can fire a secondary fire icicle after a short charge that can do big long range damage. She can create an instant ice wall to separate teams, isolate certain enemies, or just block incoming damage, and she can also cocoon herself in a block of ice to become invulnerable and heal. Her ultimate creates a pretty large area blizzard that quickly freezes all enemies inside, good for area denial on a point or for clearing an enemy team off of a point that they're stubbornly holding.

Mei no longer Freezes people outside of her Ultimate. Her gun's primary fire now slows enemies drastically, and her icicle deals increased damage based on how "frozen" the target is.

For me this one really shows the versatility of the story-telling for the overwatch ip. They don't always need to do the big action set pieces. They can engage you so intensely with just gripping story and emotion. Even the other cinematics that do have big fight scenes still have big emotion and you connect w the characters so easily. For me the kind of cinematic standouts are the shots that make mei look 'small.' Like when she loses her friends or when she loses snowball. Those big shots make her look so small and isolated and alone and it's really effective. Also I never realized it until I saw your breakdown that in that scene where she's brushing her teeth, the fact that you pointed out that the shot starts out of focus made me realize they synced up the shot coming into focus with her putting her glasses on, which is really clever.

Mei is one of my favorite characters to play. Shes very cute and bubbly, but her ice weapon headshots are so mf savage it kind of makes her terrifying.

I'm always so inspired by her constant determination in spite of constant loss and challenges. She loses everyone and everything she knows, but she doesn't let it go in vain. I love her sm

Don't look up ages of Overwatch characters. Sometime ago they tried to pinpoint all of them to fit them together yet it made it wierd lorewise... Apparently Mei was 33 before that cryo-chamber incident so no, not a teenager ^^' I bet you could have guess after this cinematic but she was part of Overwatches research team which since Overwatch was forced to shut down was simply forgotten about since they were all asleep. Winstons call to reactivate Overwatch then activated the base. As you said ingame she weaponized that ice blaster and her little companion is her ultimate ability. Just if you were intrested in some background. :) This is one of my favorite cinematics especially because it's not action pact. Can't wait for you to do the ones you are missing!

yeah some of the ages just plain make no sense for what we know like kiriko and the shimadas were supposed to have grown up training together (with in game images showing what looks like 10-11 tear old shimadas and like a 6-7 year old kiriko) but the "official ages" document they released put them at like 18 years apart or something like that. there are others but that was one of the most glaring oddities

I still tear up about snowballs sacrifice for mei....and hanzos you aren't even worthy to say his name and the act showing reins understanding of his duty that his mentor, Balderich, has been trying to pass to him ("you must be their shield"-in many different ways) as he gives up his hammer to the mortally wounded Balderich and you hear the Crusaders oath again but with muvh more weight and meaning as reins...."old friend"s....sacrifice allows him to survive....

Omg I never noticed how similar this short film is to the Big hero 6 Hiro went from a scientist-inventor to a superhero, just like Mei Hiro's parents and his older brother died, and at the end his robot friend, who came to life at the very end of the cartoon Mei's team died and her robot friend, who came to life at the very end of the cartoon Hiro watched the recording with his brother, cried and perked up Mei watched the recording with Winst, cried and perked up

The plotting is incredibly dark but it's overall a hopeful message about courage in the face of incredible loss. The story could have been ruined by bringing back all of her friends. The storyboarding takes great care to give the characters their due respect. I learned a lot from your breakdown of the cinematography choices the team made.

They did a GREAT job on her face! In the intro you think that was a real person was talking. She has that cute small face. Small nose small mouth, but then you look up she has those big cartoon eyes. Now I'm thinking about it, her hair has a realistic shape. Honestly, of all the heroes she's the most real looking one. She visually connects to me in many ways. Make you want to hop in a truck and get her out of there. 😆😆

Even as someone who doesn't play Overwatch as not into PvP games, I always have to check out their cinematics. Blizzard massively over deliver on them every time and are just cinema to watch. Was so disappointing when they cut their plans for PvE. As all the characters are just so damn likeable.

It bugs me a LOT when she cries over the bot. It's a bot! Just recharge the battery ffs! Which she does moments later, defeating the emotional impact. Blizzard is great at creating good looking cinematics but their storytelling and tone makes my head hurt a lot of the time.

To me it makes sense. Losing snowball was to symbolize that now she really IS alone, unless she does something. Had she just given up, snowball really would be gone, so it's the motivation she needed to push on. She could save snowball and herself unlike the friends she lost.

Can't recharge the battery in a blizzard and like already mentioned she now is totally alone and has no one to lean on. A bot isn't just a bot in that world, they have emotions and intelligence.
