@@kaizammit there were hints that Sombra was a character coming to Overwatch after release, and there was a huge ARG building up to it, so people were hyped and expecting her reveal; even speculating the hacking part. When it actually happened the crowd went crazy. Small note, Sombra’s boop is a little more malicious than it looks at first. If you look at 39:55 when she grabs the photo of the daughter, there’s another picture of the chairwoman with her daughter booping her nose. It’s a little thing the chairwoman does to her daughter, sombras mocking her and showing that she knows a lot more about the chairwoman’s personal life as a little extra threat
@hugomendoza56655 ай бұрын
Yeah that was something I noticed too on re-watches of this short. It's really dark to turn a cute, innocent moment between mother and daughter into an intensely threatening gesture. Really great way to show off Sombra's 'villainy.' A stereotypical 'threat' wouldn't have been as intense. Using that tiny, personal moment creates a genuine sense of dread for the other character.
@christophermason50885 ай бұрын
dude i have never noticed that. devil in the details as Kai would say

It's weird that blizzard made this one-time interaction Sombra's "thing" by adding it as a voiceline in the game, even though it's probably not a part of her character if she's only mocking Katya Volskaya here
@Shiftarus2 ай бұрын
@@reio4641 people made it a thing because its a fun voiceline , its a perfect line for many in game moments
@hugomendoza56655 ай бұрын
It makes sense that I didn't notice this consciously, but I never realized how the entire cinematic 'plays' with your perception of Sombra. Indeed, her character is very morally gray, so it's reflected in the lighting, in that the lighting on her is constantly changing, so you never get a stable sense of whether she's a 'good guy' or a 'bad guy.' Also, a tiny detail I always liked is that right after Sombra reveals she's not going to kill her, she does this quick thing where she looks down and then takes a weird step to the side. The reason she does that is to step over the dead body of one of the soldiers she's killed. It's a great moment of continuity, since they'd obviously still be on the ground in the room. They don't make the characters move as if the bodies disappeared. They're treating them like they're still there, even if they're not in frame anymore.
@reio46413 ай бұрын
I was wondering what that glance meant, as it looked like some sort of realization, but had no connection to what she said next
@Ryuu7172 ай бұрын
Wow, I notice so much more little hidden intimate details through your breakdowns and I've watched the original shorts tons of times. Like the 2nd picture frame on Volskayas desk. 39:54 It shows her doing the nose "boop" to her daughter. I always thought Sombra's famous Boop line (which became a voice line in the game, sprays and her pesudo catchphrase) was created by her. But it might imply that Sombra's been watching her and her family at home or just implying "I know you have someone you care about" cause she saw the pictures. I wager that Katya Volskaya plays with her daughter and boops her nose, something intimate only she would know. Sombra shows that she knows alot more than you might think or is and will be watching her, "So don't try anything". A menacing yet playful threat to coerce Volskaya to submit and give her what she wants. Sombra is a hacking genius, a spy and a master manipulator, all while hiding her own identity and her motives. She also is always informed and knows everything that is going on. Further implied by when she directly looks at us breaking the 4th wall and then boops the screen, acknowledging she knows we exist or that her actions are being broadcasted on a screen from the scan lines that appear and that she has the power to turn the screen off then the video ends. The devs really thoroughly think through their characters, its kinda crazy.
@shortyshawty5 ай бұрын
Sombra had SO MUCH hype around her at the time with teasing and Easter eggs and people were like their own little hackers trying to find out more and more about her. When this was finally released it was so hype, man this period of the game was peak.

The very last character shown in the cinematic is Zarya, who is a tank hero in the game. As for your question, is she a "proper hero", it's complicated. Zarya seems to have a bit of an antagonistic view of Overwatch, who are supposed to be the "real good guys" in the setting. She's definetly not evil though. At the time when this cinematic was made, in the narrative she was maybe a bit of an antihero? So, one of the good guys, but like, not the "goodest of good" like say Winston or Tracer.
@Kandarako5 ай бұрын
yeah. is hard to follow the storyline because it almost never happens ingame but along lots of media: At first she is chasing sombra in a comic, where she discovers what her boss hides about obtaining tech from omnics, so became desinterested in her (without abandoning her values for her country) Later, in a short story, the gunslinger recruits her for the new overwatch Finally, we see her in the "invasion" missions, alongside the other members caassidy recruited in the short stories. In order to know all about zarya, and almost any other character, you are supposed to know about the comic, the story, and the pve missions, and I would say is a lot to ask when it would be easier to access everything from the game itself

I don’t know if it’s been said enough, but I fully appreciate your breakdown in the way it’s done. Explaining film techniques and breaking things down frame by frame - it’s especially good on big spectacle scenes or Videos like Overwatch’s Dragons cinematic or their Honor and Glory cinematic. But what I like about how you break these down is this isn’t normally one of my favorite cinematics, but you elevate it and show full appreciation for it since you have such an eye for Film, which really gives me so much more insight into these cinematic shorts. The last character, the hero, is Zarya. Her Story is continued in the Overwatch Comics, sadly not in kinematics.
@sniclops154 ай бұрын
Sombra is less a villain and more like a free agent. She works for her own personal gains. She mainly works for Talon since they get her to all the high value targets she likes to strike deals with, and Talon... tolerates her because she is good at her job. The woman with the pink hair at the very end is Zarya, and yes she is a good guy. She currently holds the world record in weightlifting in the overwatch lore, and carries a beam cannon normally mounted on the side of an aircraft. She has a radical hatred of omnics ever since they began ravaging Russia, so if she ever found out her leader was getting tech from them, she'd probably feel a little gutted. The story continues in a comic on Blizzard's website, where Zarya finds and confronts Sombra.

So you mentioned the Wilhelm scream, and i completely agree with your take, initially i found the scream fun, but now it just ruins immersions. You have also commented on how in animation, animating it so it looks like it was for instance shot on a real camera helps with the immersion. My question to you is, when you see dolly motions that is either extremely hard to do in live action, or down right impossible, does that ruin it for you?

The thing to understand about Aleksandra Zaryanova, "Zarya", is that she is an Olympic Powerlifting champion from Russia whose motivations are always patriotic. She gave up her athletic career to serve in the Russian Defense Force defending the Motherland against the Omnium in Siberia, as her family was killed when she was young in the first Omnic uprising. She is initially antagonistic towards Overwatch due to their rivalry with the RDF, but eventually is talked into joining after the events of Overwatch 2's release. Katya Volskaya (the Chairman in the cinematic) provides Zarya with her specialized Particle Cannon, as this smaller model of what the Russian mecha use is still much too heavy for a regular soldier to wield, and the mechs are too large for any quick maneuvering and agile usage of the weapon, so it's PERFECT for her :D "Sombra" is spanish for 'shadow', which fits her character perfectly, able to disappear with active camouflage and reposition instantly with her teleport beacon. She is EXTREMELY hard to pin down and find out where she even is, let alone try to eliminate her. She's a huuuuge pain in the ass for an enemy team to deal with when played even semi-competently.
