One of my all time favorite movies of all time. The fact three people can carry this movie is showcase of great actors/script. Also, I’m right there with you. The scene of John Goodman unable to see Michelle as a woman, but a little girl/little princess is one of the creepiest scenes of this entire movie. And the fact that he becomes clean shaven/well dressed after THAT scene scares me so bad. Haha

It is implied that he wants her to be his pretty princess, but at the same time there is a weird sexual vibe to it - hence why he hates the other man touching her, or even making her laugh with a joke. Could be tied to why the wife/daughter left him. It adds a whole new layer to the "YUCK" vibe of his character. I am familiar with this, lol. He is GROSSLY possessive.

I remember watching this movie. It was an amazing experience. It was a midnight screening, i went with a friend, and the cinema was EMPTY. And at the time I haven't watched the first movie or knew what happened in it, so i was oblivious to whether the bad guy was insane or telling the truth. Being in an empty cinema at night added so much to the feel. It almost felt like we ourselves were in a bunker, separated from the outside world not knowing what's happening outside. As the movie progressed i was certain the bad guy was just insane. So you could imagine the impact of my surprise - taking into account all the above - when FUCKING ALIENS SHOWED UP. it was amazing. And going out of the cinema felt like getting out of the bunker from the film. Such an experience. Glad you watched it! Much love bro.

The thing I love about this film's plot is it SEEMS like such a convoluted script idea at first - but the more you think about it, the idea of crazy people taking advantage of a societal collapse to fulfill their own nefarious ideas, without the problem of police and whatnot, makes PERFECT sense. There would be thousands of Howards out there, fully taking advantage of the lawless world.
@johnlocke94372 жыл бұрын
Goodman's character has this weird fixation on a daughter that he's lost so he replaces her with others and his psyche absolutely cannot recognise that it's not a child. He has a compulsion to regain and enforce control on his life, his malady makes him defend his "child" at all costs as if she's 10 years old. Even when she's escaping and he's clawing at her ankle he says "you can't run away from THEM", in his mind he is protecting his young daughter. Crazy? Totally. Tragic? Possibly. Great character.
@wyterabitt21492 жыл бұрын
How do you know he also lost a daughter, been a while since I have seen the film. He kidnapped a random kid to pretend she was his daughter and locked her away (and probably killed her), but other than that did he actually also have a daughter confirmed before that?
@johnlocke94372 жыл бұрын
@@wyterabitt2149 I believe it was the viral marketing for the movie, there are emails/texts between him and his estranged wife. She left him and took their daughter to an unknown location in a different state. Why she left isn't explicitly stated other than references to his behaviour.

Emmett did what he did to prevent Howard from killing Michelle too. Goodman and Winstead are phenomenal, great performances! The last act was better then I could of ever imagined. She’s in season 3 of Fargo, and she steals the show in my opinion. Mcgregor is really good as well…

I know the ending is very devisive but I honestly 100% love it. The tension kept ratcheting over the entire movie and just when she gets outside and you think it's over NOPE! Things get dialed to 11. One thing I love about the ending is how audacious it is. Any other movie would do one of two options. (a) She takes off the helmet and discovers that Goodman was wrong all along. **trombone noise** Credits roll. (b) She takes off the mask, she sees there are actually aliens - so the most ridiculous of Goodman's scenarios he posed was true. **trombone noise** Credits roll. But this movie takes a third route. It basically reveals that the "Invaders from Mars" scenario is true. And then it keeps GOING. And going and going.

The final shot would show her driving towards the city, and we see the skyline of the city showing that *something* has happened to the world while she was down there, but it would be completely ambiguous. The final scene as it is is quite Meh, worst part of the movie easily but I don't think it ruins it because the rest of it is so good.

I wasn't wild about the way the ending was done, but I LOVE that the answer to, "Is something going on out there, or is this guy crazy?" turns out to be "BOTH!" Goodman is a living legend, and IMO a greatly underappreciated and underused actor, whether he's playing Comic, Dramatic, or Sinister. He rides that fine line here of being clearly psychotic and threatening, while still being human and believable. Not to discount his co-stars, but his performance is what made this movie.

This film almost feels adapted (treatment?) from a play ‐- you have a masterclass from John Goodman physically setting the mood with every human expression available to him. Then as a bonus, we get a hefty visual ending payoff, almost as popcorn CG relief from the earlier tense and visceral interior drama. I know you think the ending dampens, but I think the story had little runtime left to propel her forward, as you quickly observed, to the next purposeful chapter of her life Kinda jarring but worth the old fashioned sci-fi thrills!

All the Cloverfield films are disjointed as they have only the name connection, but it all stemmed out of The Mist. Hear me out. What happened in the mist opened portals to inter-dimensional crossover. At the end of that film, it seemed like the military had managed to reseal and win over the monsters had only been an ongoing process. It eventually led to the Cloverfield branch and, gets this, Pacific Rim. Yes, Stephen King had opened an unintentional rift in the multiverse of meta madness.

I've always thought of these films as 'ordinary problems compounded by extraordinary events'. In the first film it's about a couple who broke up and want to reconcile, the second film is about a woman who's always ran from her problems learning to stand up for herself, (the third film I won't spoil), and then just add monsters as an underlying threat. Yes there's a giant monster, yes there's an alien invasion, but that's not the point. That's not the plot.

Somewhere near the end of Cloverfield you learn, in an aside sort of way, that there are more of the big creatures that are either coming or have started to show up, I forget which. That changes the scenario from the random happenstance of some spacefaring megabeast encountering Earth into a likely intentional first wave assault on the planet. Whatever is behind it would have to be capable of creating something like that to use as its shock troops, and likely capable of creating other sorts of bad things too. Similar to the xenomorph in Alien, which is supposedly genetically engineered to be a planet conqueror. Just drop a few eggs, sit back, and wait.

If you watch The Cloverfield Paradox it essentially explains it - kind of. The events in that film are the reason why scattered across different times/timelines of Earth various "monsters" are let loose. 10 Cloverfield Lane is connected to that event, but it is not in the same timeline as the original Cloverfield film which is also caused by the Paradox film events.

WARRIOR (2011) a movie about deep family trauma and redemption based around a MMA competition. far deeper than your average action drama movie. definitely worth a watch.

It also represents compassion and softness. So they purposely framed the pink backgrounds shots whenever Goodman was attempting to show that "softer" side of him.
