It's been pointed out to me that the grandma might not be as oblivious as she makes herself out to be. She specifically grabs cleaning supplies that are known for removing blood from carpet. They wouldn't work on salsa, or nearly as well.

Tuco's grandma isn't completely oblivious. She insists on using club soda to clean up the stain. Fun fact, club soda isn't any better for salsa, but it is good for cleaning up protein stains like blood. There might be a lot she doesn't want to know, but at the end of the day, she's a Salamanca too. One thing I appreciate about this episode is it shows something that lawyers are good for that people don't think about: sometimes you need someone else to speak on your behalf when you aren't really in a position to negotiate for yourself. Glad to see you're a MIchael Mando fan. Nacho is one of the best characters in this show.

Can't wait to go on this ride with you! Here's some 'Mijo' BTS trivia for you - I'll try and hurl some at you with every reaction to enlighten you (there's often a lot, *cracks knuckles*...) So, first off, this episode spans three weeks: May 25th - June 15th 2002. Throughout production, keeping it a secret that they were bringing back Tuco was a real five-star nightmare, so they called the character “Mijo” - even in the scripts, on set, way before they even began filming the pilot, so it didn’t ruin the surprise. Ray Cruz who plays him didn’t even attend the pilot premiere. Dedication, my friend. And Tuco’s grandmother is played by Miriam Colon who’s also in Scarface, along with the late Mark Margolis (Hector) and Steven Bauer (Don Eladio). Also, recognise pictures of a baby Ray Cruz around the grandmother’s house. It’s also worth noting, would you believe, that this is pre-meth Tuco. And his gun is a model called 'The Judge' by Taurus. I think it holds five rounds, each one the size of a thumb. The desert scene was 13 pages long in the script, shot over two days, and was a nightmare to film due to the high winds, heat, dust. It’s also filmed in the exact spot where Walter gave his “say my name” speech. You’ll notice a lot throughout BCS that there’s not as much handheld camera work as there was in BB. Ray and Bob rehearsed quite a lot to get the tone of this whole scene just perfect, and it’s an acting masterclass. Jonathan Banks (Mike) still sings praise over it. Tuco foaming at the mouth over giving Cal and Lars both ‘Columbian Neckties’ - a nice and subtle nod to episode two of BB - ‘Cat’s in the Bag…’ as Jesse says to Walt that this is exactly what Krazy-8 will do to their families. And that handshake between Tuco and Jimmy was improvised by Ray. (note: THAT. F’KING. ZOOM.) Michael McKean tossing the phone onto the lawn and it landing near camera: one take. Just as well because Vince needed to use that camera asap to shoot his scene around the corner. Chuck’s space blankets are lined also, so it doesn’t make so much noise for the sound crew and they're more comfy to wear. They bought quite a lot of them, only for NASA to send them a lifetime's worth for free. The “It’s showtime, folks!” montage was filmed in just under a day, as they only had the courtroom building for that one day. A testament to the planning and professionalism of the BCS team. Jimmy’s office/home is the smallest box room on a massive sound stage, it’s insane just how claustrophobic it is. Vince Gilligan wanted small, and each time the set designers rebuilt it (I think it was three), he’d want it smaller, until they ended up with a room that can barely fit three crew members in. You’ll notice down the line that they’ll shoot static shots from the corner of the room with a camera that’s fitted with a custom lens that Vince had made, and it’s able to take in the entire room. Super filmmaking technique. And the final scene between Nacho and Jimmy - quite an significant one that the writers talked about it for about a year, as they kept coming back to the question: what is the different between Jimmy and Saul? - and we get that line, “I’m a lawyer, not a criminal.” And then you recall back to Jesse’s introduction to him in BB - “You need a *criminal* lawyer.” So much weight behind this scene. Anyway, hope you liked all that! Keep 'em coming, broseph. x

The “it’s showtime!” sequence of Saul working as a public defender is a tribute to “All that Jazz”, Bob Fosse’s semi-autobiographical film. It’s a masterpiece, you should watch it!

Good idea about having a notepad handy! A lot of Breaking Bad was shot with a handheld feel to it, not many locked down or steadicam-style sequences (with maybe the exception of season 5). Better Call Saul is so full of static shots that can just be breathtaking, and a LOT of wides. They really turned everything up to 11 for this show.

If you ever want to feel mad about the Emmys, just remember: Better Caull Saul was never even nominated for best cinematography. Wednesday got nominated. A documentary about The Lakers got nominated. Star Wars: Andor got nominated. The Game of Thrones Finale? It got nominated. Amazon's Lord of the Rings series? It got nominated. AppleTV+'s terrible adaptation of Foundation? It got nominated. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has won the award. The Crown? Won. Twice. Like, I don't have anything against those other shows. In fact, when it comes to the Game of Thrones finale, the Lord of the Rings series and Foundation, the cinematography was basically the only thing holding those together (though all of those were mostly just because of CGI budgets larger than the GDP of some mid-sized nations). But, Better Call Saul, even the first season, set a new standard for cinematography on the small screen. And, as great as Season 1 is, subsequent seasons make earlier seasons look amateur in comparison. It's something unforgivable.

Gotta love that shot, where Tuco and Saul are shaking hands in agreement, meanwhile the skateboarder twins are laying on the ground watching saul seal thier legs fate 😅 Tuco may have broken thier legs, but Saul signed off on it.

The lesson everyone should learn from "Mijo" is never, under any circumstances, call an old grandmother "biznatch" or any derogatory term. Tuco's actions weren't completely unjustified in this episode.
