I've grown to appreciate Marie's character a lot more after re-watching the show, at first watch you sorta focus on the 'main' characters and tend to skip over the depth of her character. Visiting houses and pretending to be someone else is a way for her to cope with her current life. From Betsy Brandt herself: "When I read the script, I made the decision that Marie would love making up those names and saying who she was and imagining for a brief moment that this was her life. It’s a way for her to become someone else. It’s a dread-free, alcohol-free escape. I see why it’s addictive because she can go and be someone else and she also knows if the shit comes down, Hank’s gonna save her."

This episode feels very unique. For the majority of the show it is Walter and Skylers relationship that is struggling the most, while everyone else acts like its a normal day. This one is one of the few that it's flipped around - Walter and Skyler finally have something to connect them together, whilst everyone else is shown to be coping with their situations and trauma I maybe wrong I haven't watched this show in a year but thats how I feel
@marvelsandals4228
@marvelsandals4228 Жыл бұрын
Yes, Skyler's hypothesis turned out to be correct: to keep her family together she kept Walt in it and took the plunge INTO the world of crime with him. It worked, they're bonding much more, perhaps more than they did PRIOR to Walt becoming a criminal, when their relationship felt very shallow and hollow, with her oblivious to all the emotions bottled up waiting for the right trigger to surface. Now they fully understand each other, they don't hide the nasty parts of their lives, and they aren't judging them either, just being themselves together. Not exactly the perfect couple, but hey, they made it work. More than most couples can say.

I can actually feel for Jesse here. Speaking from personal experience, I messed up at one time too. Wasn't nearly as bad as Jesse's situation, but pain is relative. And while coping, I wanted to interact with people a lot, I wanted parties, I wanted noise. Mainly because I did absolutely not want to be alone with my thoughts. Worst thing after screwing up big time, is being alone in your head. And that's why the big parties, the karts, the noise. Just so you can not focus on what's bothering you. They captured it perfectly with Jesse here. It's sad seeing Walt totally ignore Jesse. And well, Jesse really can't go to anyone with his problem. At the moment he had no way to actually resolve the issue, so distraction is what his heart wanted. Truly tragic, well written, and shown through actions, rather than having Jesse sit down and tell someone that he is feeling bad becuase he shot someone.
@marvelsandals4228
@marvelsandals4228 Жыл бұрын
Yeah when Jesse asks Walt if he wants to go go carting, his whole tone, body language, etc. he looks like an abused puppy whimpering. Like my man is desperate for human contact. Walt would barely have to try, he could be a jerk, stroke his own ego, etc. Jesse would probably eat it up, anything to just have somebody around who MIGHT understand what he's going through, and to be fair, Walt kind of does. They have been doing this from the beginning, numerous drug dealers tried to have them killed, they have killed people (Walt killed crazy 8 in what episode 3? and he of course, killed 2 of Gus' henchmen last season). With crazy 8 they were both extremely green, but were cornered, if they don't kill him, they're screwed. At that time Walt was emotionally breaking and couldn't bring himself to do it until the last minute when he did it with tears dripping down his face. That kill was very similar to Jesse's kill tbh. Walt has been thru what Jesse has, they have a bond that transcends all others. Walt killed those henchmen to save Jesse's life and Jesse killed Gale to save them both. Walt could use this opportunity to take Jesse under his wing, show him some warmth, rekindle that bond, get a pseudo father-son or mentor-student relationship going, it would probably pay of in the future if Gus or somebody else became a threat, so he can trust Jesse to have his back. Instead, Walt doesn't respond to it. Maybe Walt is also trying to avoid how he really feels deep down about ordering Jesse to kill an innocent man. Walt's escape is the car wash. The more he focuses on this business deal, the less he has to think about Jesse's sad situation.

Maybe green means go, good, inexperienced, or perhaps green is the color of money, like that used to be his main goal, to pay his bills, make sure his family was financially secure, etc. Now his color is red, red means stop, warning, danger, blood, death, and of course, the devil. The meth lab is drenched in red, deep underground in a basement, like descending into hell. Red also represents red hot emotion, passion, ambition, which shows how Walt's new focus is not money, but ambition, pride, ego, etc. He wants to feel good, powerful, the top dog, etc.

That's another way Skylar and Walt connected. Skylar refused to do the smart thing on a point of pride, because she is mad at someone for insulting her and Walt. When asked, instead of hiding her feelings with a logical argument, she just admits that she is petty. This is exactly what would persuade Walt to agree, "he said what about me?" Then he pulls a 180 and is fully on board, for a little petty revenge haha

That was one of the big reasons to include Saul as a character. Jesse started out as a pretty funny character (as did Hank) initially, but as they became more three dimensional and serious, Saul became the comic relief highlight to lighten the extremely depressing vibe a bit. Darkness is the rule in a show like that so if there are no moments of levity it would be so sad that nobody would be able to keep watching.

In reference to Marie relapsing, it got me thinking. There is a parable, possibly of a man who takes his son in a boat. The father wants his son to navigate the rapids, but the son is too caught up in his own fear. So the father feigns an incapacitating injury, telling the son "you must get us back to help". With a renewed focus, the son braves the rapids and gets them back to civilization, just to find that the father is fine. Maybe not the perfect comparison and Marie is far from selfless in this. Passive/aggressive for sure. But sometimes, it takes the great need of someone we love, to yank us out of own troubles.

I actually found Marie the most sympathetic character. The worst thing she ever does is steal some silverware to cope in private with becoming her husband's unappreciated caregiver overnight. I actually liked her since very early on in the show when when the White family have that intervention upon learning about Walt's cancer diagnosis and Skyler is pressuring him to get treatment and Marie is the only one to say it's Walt's own choice what he does with his own life (and Hank concurs)

She doesn't want anybody to discover that he is a drug dealer. Walt was a high school chemistry teacher who was so poor he had to work at a car wash (the one they're buying) after school just to pay the bills. Now, after paying for expensive state of the art cancer treatment, he has no job, and yet is wealthy enough to buy a car wash in cash? If the police notice that, they may be a bit sus. Where did Walt get all that cash from? The last thing they want is that kind of scrutiny rn. The whole point of the car wash up venture is to launder their ill gotten gains, so they can claim "oh, the car wash has been very lucrative this month" and explain the source of their wealth (a bit like Los Polos for Gus).

I think another genius pairing with skylar and walter's criminal arc 🤣is that we are presented with walter white a man with a high theoretical IQ struggling to get things right (like carrying the barrel) and his ego about Skylar not having the accolades he does but she evidently has a far far higher performance IQ and Walter cannot stand that she is more rational and surgically precise in every way she approaches the next move, imagine how dangerous she would have been if she was in on it from the ground floor

I would say that Walt is obviously a very intelligent man, especially when it comes to his domain (Chemistry), but he is also very emotional, has a big ego, pride, etc. That often clouds his judgment and he (as Saul said) takes things very personally. Skyler's background was in finances, and she already worked for Ted who asked her to fix his dirty books, so she has a lot of experience at this sort of thing. Just like Ted, Walt keeps thinking what's the big deal, but she is pulling her hair out like that's how people who get caught think, if you want to keep all this money you have to be smarter.

That's even deeper when you think about that last scene where Jesse takes a stack of money (of which he has more than he could ever need) and throws it into the air yelling "money!" just to watch a room full of (most likely) poor, regular dudes scramble to grab as much as they can, shoving each other out of the way to grab a few more bills. His mind is toying with the idea of money and its power over human beings to control their behavior and make them into monsters. Maybe he wants to do that to himself, to screen out all his pain and focus on how much money he is making in his current line of work, but he is already kind of set. He doesn't need more, so it is a less effective carrot now. He has no real goal or purpose in life rn, why is he alive? Because Gus needs him and Walter around (for now). That's it. He doesn't even like himself, especially after what happened to Gale. Once you take away the carrot of money, he has nothing to live for.
