To answer your question, the reason Gus killed Victor is because he was spotted at the crime scene. It's really that simple. Victor was also running to the scene, going into the apartment at one point to get a better look at Gale, which would be more than enough to arouse suspicion with the onlookers. When the investigators canvas the crime scene, it is likely that the witnesses will remember Victor. Also, consider the fact that Gus doesn't appear until later that morning and it is highly likely that he has close connections with law enforcement given his position in society. Based on the fact that the killing was at night and Walter mentions that it's 9AM at some point indicated that's it's been at least 8 to 10 hours since Mike placed the phone call to Gus. That's more than enough time for a guy like Gus to do his homework about the situation and determine loose ends based on what was initially discovered at the crime scene. It's also vaguely hinted towards the beginning of the episode, where Mike asks Victor if he was seen. Genius level writing.

Best part about this is Gus wouldn’t have killed him had he not been spotted at the crime scene, he sent a message sure but he wouldn’t have done it for no reason.
@diamondem
@diamondem Жыл бұрын
It's not that simple. There were likely a multitude of reasons Gus killed Victor. Part of it could have been him being spotted at the crime scene, another part was 100% to send a message to Walt and Jesse. I think Jesse was spot on when he told Walt that the message was "If I can't kill you, you'll sure as shit wish you were dead." Another part could also be Victor "flying to close to the sun" like Walt says later and that he took the liberty of trying to cook the batch on his own and he basically overstepped.
@jcs1025
@jcs1025 Жыл бұрын
I agree that a large part of it was to send a message. Victor was the only one in that room at that moment that was ‘expendable’ in Gus’s eyes. It may have to do with other things as well, but I think Gus was enraged and needed to lash out, and Victor was it. He certainly wasn’t going to kill Mike, and Walt and Jesse had him over a barrel at the moment. Also, notice how he aims the spurting blood directly at Walt and Jesse. This was a message - and Victor paid the price.

I feel like theres 2 ways you can interpret that moment with Mike. One, he's just reacting out of pure shock/instinct, pointing the gun towards the current threat in the room that is actively killing somebody until he snaps out of it and realizes it's his boss again. The 2nd way of interpreting it and what I personally choose to believe is that Mike wasn't entirely sure that he wasn't next... His boss just seemingly snapped and brutally killed Mike's hand picked partner, seemingly in response to their failure to keep Gale alive rather than the fact that Victor had been seen and needed to go anyways. But if you were Mike in that moment, you don't think the thought crossed his mind that if Gus is willing to slaughter Victor like that, then what's stopping him from doing the same to him? Especially since Mike could have seen it at that moment as Gus retaliating for their failure and killing them off to even further intimidate Walt and Jesse, who Gale is now forced to work with against his will. I mean Walt even leans on that exact same point later during the scene after all of this in the bar in order to try to get Mike on his side to take out Gus, framing it as a way to protect all 3 of them since now he knows Mike has to be thinking that if it happened to Victor, it could also happen to him.

So many things going on in this episode. Gus barely speak, Jesse barely speaks, Walt panics, begs, overexplains and does everything Walt usually does. I think poor Victor got that treatment because someone had to be made an example of, and out of the people there, he was the most expendable. And it's hilarious how after being silent for most of the episode, Jesse's first words to Mike are "trust us". Both Mike and Walt felt the irony in that statement. My favorite part of the episode is Mike pointing his gun towards Gus when the neck slicing happens. Gus did something that made Mike lose his cool for a second and muscle memory kicked in. Really human moment.

One of my favorite little things in this episode is how when Gus does the deed it flashes to Walt, Jesse, and Mike and you see that Mike pulls his gun on Gus out of instinct. It really shows how taken off guard Mike was at that moment. Of all the things he expected to happen at that moment that was not one of them, and that's saying a LOT for Mike.

The way I see the whole thing with Gus killing his own guy is as a mix of things. The top 2 are: the guy was a witness and became a liability in this issue, and also it showed Gus as a guy who was speechless with rage and for his own sanity did to that guy what he wished he could do to the other two. It was cathartic as well as a solution to the sloppiness at Gail's apartment. Plus, there is what Jesse said, he did it to torture them, to get back at them, so discharge some of his vitriol on the ones who caused it.

I feel like every fiber of his being wanted to kill Walt and Jesse...but, Walt was right. He is too smart to do that. Without them, his billion dollar drug empire doesn't work, no product, no profit. It's like "I came here to kill SOMEONE and I'm not leaving until I get my fix." It also verifies Walt's point about him and Jesse being too valuable to Gus. Guess who's not? His loyal henchman, Victor. His life is completely insignificant to Gus, the man crushed him like a bug, didn't even break eye contact or say a word before, during, or after. Just casually snuffed him out, because he could. That's a sign of where Walter and Jesse stand. He needs them...for now. What happens when he doesn't need them anymore?

The reason he killed Victor was the lab book being left at the crime scene, hence how the episode ended, panning over to the book, answering the question which would be on any viewers mind. Victor was there, he was spotted AND he didn't remove the book of lab notes Gail had been taking.

One of the things in storytelling especially in film that tends to get ignored a lot is the stare. Eyes are extraordinarily important to pay attention to because it can carry an entire character's line just as much as an actor recites their character's line. In this case, Gus was telling Walt, Jessie, and Mike through the stare "I am still in control here and I am as much capable of getting my hands dirty as you three do." Always pay attention to the eyes in storytelling.

 @James VS Cinema As others have said, there are several reasons Gus killed his guy. One other reason (aside from the ones I've seen already stated) is that once Gus decided he needed to stick with Walt, part of getting him in line was also making sure Walt wouldn't feel threatened that he could be replaced by another cook. Gus removed a possible reason for Walt to get anxious and misbehave again.

Victor is a liability because he ties them to the crime scene. He got spotted. I also like to think that Victor was the only witness to Gus caving to Walt and Jessie, so not having anyone around to spread that Gus went soft or got leveraged is also something.

Someone else has said that Gus killed Victor because he was at the crime scene. Yes, true, probably. But this doesn't explain why he made such a spectacle for Walt and Jesse. I think the real reason is that he wanted them to know what he knows he can't kill them...but that doesn't mean he won't kill everyone around them, so they had better stay in line

One if the coolest details of this episode is the "realistic" shot of gales face after jesse had shot him. Usually in tv and movies a faceshot will render a head or face to blurry red gore with little to no meaning behind the violence itself at all but the one single bullet hole in his cheek with his eye bruised around it is a very haunting image to witness and really seals it for the viewers that jesse has now legitimately become a killer.

He’s not a Tuco/Hector/Walter type of guy. He’s not ego driven or emotionally unstable enough to fly off the handle for such a petty reason like that. It was a calculated move. ...which actually wasn't in the script but was improvised by Jonathan Banks (the actor who plays Mike) while shooting the scene. Then apparently when they got to the editing room, Vince Gilligan was furious (at first) that they didn't shoot any other coverage of this scene without Mike pulling out his gun, because he felt this was totally out of character as a reaction from Mike. He spent some time with the editors trying to cut around it, but also listening to others around him saying that it was actually a really powerful reaction and he should keep it in. Eventually he came round to the idea, realising that by seeing the usually unshakeable Mike completely lose his composure and freak out, it really enhanced everything this scene was trying to demonstrate about how Gus is ruthlessly teaching everyone a lesson here.

Something I think is tragic is how the writers created Jesse, a character that feels everything deeply all the time like an exposed nerve, and then they let him loose, free to feel everything in the brutal world of Breaking Bad. Being perhaps the only character in the show who's never become desensitized to the horror around him, I must say that as much as it is a virtue for his sense of humanity, it is definitely a curse from a mental health standpoint, imho. As cruel as it is, apathy and becoming desensitized is a coping mechanism that allows your mind to survive horrible things. After seeing this episode, I couldn't help but think by the end that this is what a broken mind looks like, especially after Jesse tells Walt about the message Gus was sending with Victor's death: "If I can't kill you, you'll sure as shit wish you were dead" with a hollow smile, as in, after everything he has seen and after having to kill Gale, Jesse sure as shit wishes he was dead.

Is Gus's practicality that makes him the best bad guy on any recent television show. You can have somebody tatted up screaming and shooting people but nothing will be better than a person who is cold, calculated and carries out most tasks without emotion. Setting aside someone's ego and being a criminal makes them more scary to me than someone who eviscerates their enemy with a chainsaw or any extreme level of violence. That individual is truly capable of anything.

When Gale was putting Walt up on a pedestal in the intro, its a fantastic little character moment. All the way back to Gale's introduction in Season 3, he was telling Walter that the real reason hes doing this job is because he just loves the lab, and chemistry. Gus is looking at Walter as a businessman, and indeed Walter is extremely unprofessional as a businessman. Gale only sees Walter the chemist though, who produced the purest product ever. He has a need to learn and absorb the chemistry from Walter. Thats why I think he shills so hard for him, against Gus's warnings

I always saw Gus killing Victor as a sign to Walter of who is really in charge. Walter schemed to kill Gale in order to save his life and Gus killed Victor to essentially put Walter in his place and prove a point.

Marie was definitely growing on me at this point. She was kind of annoying in earlier seasons, but she is a damn Saint by this point, especially with Hank being difficult with her.

Victor was seen at the crime scene. He was a liability. I think Gus also wanted to scare Walt and Jesse. He wanted to show them that anyone could be killed.

I, for one, got the Big Black reference. I watched that show too. Good sht. Ive known about Dyrdek for years. A few of my friends skated back in the day. Im familiar with lots of skate stuff. I also watch Ridiculousness on the regular. lol. Wasnt this episode just fantastic? I mean, the whole show in general. But seriously, every episode, every season just keeps the train rolling...so to speak. Maybe Ive said too much.. Ill see my self out. lol. Thanks again James! PS - just ended it...I LOVED the 5 or so seconds it took for the Lab Notes to hit you. hehe ;)p

I almost wonder if Gus saw a part of himself in Jesse in that box cutter scene. He reacts almost the same way that Gus reacted when his friend was killed by Hector.

Gale was talking about both Walt and Jesse in the beginning but i beleive he referred to Jesse's product as the "best he's ever seen." But nonetheless, his discussion with Gus did in fact save Walt.

It could be that Gus did what he did to Victor to show Walter that 'Look, he can also make Meth but he's expendable! Watch your step, Know your place! Next time it'll be you?" Talk about work motivation 😱😐

As ppl have already pointed out, Gus killed Victor bc he was seen at the crime scene. But he obviously didn't have to do it in such a violent and gruesome way. I believe he did that to stop Walter from feeling so cofident and remind him who's boss. Walter was talking big and Gus probably wanted to remind him that Victors blood was on his hands... now literally. It's easy for Walter to make big moves and make Jesse kill someone for him and forget that his actions endanger others. Victor died because he was there to see it. If Gus just had someone kill Victor off somewhere else, Walter wouldn't have even known. We also never see Gus kill people by his own hands so he wanted to remind Walter and Jesse (and us the audience) what he's capable of. And you know. Show Walt and Jesse that they're not friendly. Gus is ready to traumatize them just like that. They're here to work for Gus and nothing more.

I'm pretty sure Victor's actor "corpsed" slightly (yes the term is ironic here) when his body is being dragged to the barrel. The very last frame, it looks like he starts to grin.

The premise that Walt "magically" can make better meth than any other fully educated chemist with the same professional equipment, plus that a drug lord would care about the difference betten 99% and 96% purity in the first place, is probably the most unrealistic part of the whole show. But that's easily acceptable as a viewer and only shows again how great this show is.

I think one of the reasons on why Gus killed Victor is to show Walt that nobody is indispensable, not even Victor. If Walt died, Gus would just find a replacement. Of course is easier and cheaper to keep him, but still he could find a new cook, just a new another right hand. Nobody is essential in Gus's operation.

Gus killed Victor because he was seen at the crimescene, and had gotten a little too confident in the past. Victor made himself the perfect canvas for Gus to write a message on.

People often say one major reason that Gus off'ed Victor was because he was seen at the crime scene, but was Gus even aware that Victor was spotted at the crime scene at this point in time? I could be wrong, but I don't recall a phone call being made to Gus after Victor told Mike he was seen there. Gus knows a lot, but isn't omnipotent. Unless he has Gale's apartment complex bugged with cameras, he wouldn't have known. His P.I. wasn't there, and unless Gus was told about it off camera... Gus DIDN'T know that Victor was spotted at the scene of the crime. Because of this, I think the reasons for doing so are the "flying to close to the sun" and the "sending a message" ones.
