If you've guessed by now, Breaking Bad is following the formula of a Shakespeare style tragedy. That dinner scene was so perfectly done. No one can be in doubt that whatever Hank does in pursuit of Walter after this scene, only Walter is to blame for it because of how cleanly that scene was plotted and shot.

I think Gus saw in Jessie a blank canvas with lots of potential and used the shotgun attack scenario to boost confidence. It's like what I did with my little brother and video games. I wanted a play mate but he wasn't good at the game, so I'd lose on purpose and pump him up to keep him interested in actually getting better at the game.

You're out your mind if you even consider Hank anything other than a self-righteous , and moralizing hypocrite. I sympathize for the character's PTSD , and he is very good at his job. But his tendency to look at the world through a simplistic lens where he is arbiter of what is good and right; is a hubris much more destructive than Walt's ego. His ethics are very questionable.

I feel like weirdly, Mike can give Jesse something that he was sorely missing up until this point, and that was feeding Jesse going off the rails, something that Walter couldnt give. I dont know exactly what to call it, but I think it has to do with the fact that Mike is also this sort of older, experienced father figure in his life, but has a humanity to him that Jesse can relate to. Gus staging the attack is such a genius move. He's said in the past, "I don't believe fear to be an effective motivator, I want investment." He's hyping up Jesse which both keeps Jesse off the streets (where he could be easily arrested given the state of his house and mental health), and makes Jesse feel like he has value by "saving" Mike here. Walt's utter confusion trying to figure out what Gus is doing is hilarious

Dude! I had exactly the same reaction after that dinner scene. I had suspected that Walt had too much blood on his hands to "beat the rap" and escape from the business with his life intact (even if perhaps he would possibly succumb to the cancer). But when Hank tied up the case against "Heisenberg" with a nice, neat bow and Walt could have let the investigation die a clean death wtih Gale, no... he has to respond with his pride. There's a really interesting parallel in this episode, which is Walter drinking around his family. If you recall in an earlier episode (Season 2, I think) when Walt fights with Hank over how much tequila he will let Flynn drink (until Flynn gets sick over it), that's also Walt's pride and machismo being fueled by the alcohol and asserting itself over his common sense and good judgment.

I think it's less wanting to control Walt and more wanting to make him redundant. When he first looked into Walt and Jesse he concluded that Jessie was a volatile junkie he didn't want to work with and that Walt was a methodical rational actor who he could. Turns out that Walt is by far the bigger problem, and the harder one to correct through a little shaping and structure. He's probably aware that Jessie matches or nearly matches Walt's expertise, so if he can get his loyalty to shift from Walt to Gus and Mike then he won't need Walt anymore.
