I love this movie, but it bombed because it only came with one of three ending and you didn't know which you would get. The director didn't make another film until My Cousin Vinny. Tim Curry has been in a ton from Rocky Horror, Legend, The Hunt for Red October. "Flames, on the sides of my face," was a Madeline Kahn (Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles) adlib.

@@bespectacledheroine7292 part of the issue with the release of this movie is that all 3 endings were split between prints, in an attempt to encourage people to go see it at a different theater to see a different ending. the final release to VHS and HBO had all 3 endings, and that's really what got it to its cult status.

The game involved a selection of people, locations in the house, and weapons. One of each was placed in a small envelope as the actual details of the crime to be solved. Players traveled to locations on the game board to find clues and win through the process of elimination. Pretty fun game and very well adapted into this movie.
@evergreenforestwitch
@evergreenforestwitch 2 жыл бұрын
And to piggy back on this, play involved being one of the players/characters and moving from room to room to suggest solutions and if the other players had that card, they would show you the "clue." To win the game you have to accuse your final answer with the phrase "It was Miss Scarlett in the library with the revolver" (or whatever it is) which makes the "Mr Body in the hall with the revolver" more funny. It's quite literally in the rule book.

I feel like this is a whodunit where you can’t really guess the outcome, and, really, the mystery isn’t quite the point. It’s the silliness, the excellent line delivery, the set designs, and the costuming. The point is just the general fun, which is why I’ve loved this movie since I was a kid. I’m always throwing out “Communism is just a red herring,” and “Flames on the side of my face.” Madeline Kahn and Tim Curry are such legends! I love how you can tell she was just riffing for a while about Yvette and her husband, and they just had to pick a spot to cut it off lol.

I saw this when it first came out, and the gimmick was that they were showing different endings at different theaters. In other words, if you saw it at the theater, it was a random ending, whether it was Peacock, Scarlet, or all of them. My friends and I went to four or five theaters to see them all. Kind of a brilliant marketing tactic really. :)

Some fun facts: Madeline Khan's line of "flames on the side of my face" were ad-libbed and everyone's reaction was genuine, Carrie Fisher was originally slated to play Ms. Scarlet but had to drop out due to rehab, and the singing telegram girl was the guitarist for The Go-Go's
@inarar5334
@inarar5334 2 жыл бұрын
And their reactions were actually "why are they letting her go off on an ad lib?" because it's literally the only words in the entire movie off script. They were super strict about ad libbing. And as funny as it is, there's a reason. They wanted the snappy old school fast banter dialogue. And it is hilarious, but it does kinda not fit. She's stumbling over her words and trailing off, etc. If they had let any other adlibs stay, those moments would have stuck out more. So yeah, on re-watch see how their reactions of "what the fuck?" also apply to "what the hell is going on?" because Kahn had managed to convince Lynn (director) to let her do that or else the take would have been cut as soon as she had gone off script.

One thing that I think gets lost over time with Clue is that - in addition to being based on the board game - it was also meant to be a throwback to the witty patter of screwball comedies, which I guess was way more popular decades before. I think going into it knowing that they were trying to do something very different for the time, and that it was going to be silly, helps one to appreciate it. (I'm someone who believes it's not necessarily better to watch something completely cold.)

The movie tried to capture the essence of the board game by having multiple endings, as if anyone could have done it like the board game. So during it's original theatrical release, each screening might be a different ending (labelled Ending A, Ending B, or Ending C). The only way you would know which ending you're watching in advance is if you looked at the schedule in the newspaper, where they would label which Ending a specific showtime will be screening. When the movie was released to home video or TV broadcast, they ended up merging all 3 endings into the cut we see today. But in the original theatrical run, it only showed one of the 3 endings, and was meant to get people to go see it multiple times.

So small detail I love in the final ending, is that Mr Green is actually the "guilty" one according to how the board game works. In the board game, each player picks a character (professor plum, miss scarlet, etc) and has to try to figure out who killed Mr Body, in what room and with what weapon. Each room, character and weapon has a card. the decks are shuffled and a card from each category is picked at random and put in an envelope, the rest of the cards are dealt to each player. If the cards are in your hand, you know it's not the answer in the envelope. You roll a die to move around the board game and go to the different rooms of the house. A couple rooms have "secret passages" which you saw in the film, which allow you to hop across the board faster. When you're in a room, you can make a suggestion of what's in the envelope. It goes around clockwise, whoever can prove you wrong has to show you the card and you now can eliminate that from your notes. Eventually through process of elimination, if you think you know the answer, you make an actual accusation of who, where and with what weapon. You check the envelope. If you're wrong, you are eliminated. If you're right, you've won the game. But, to repeat, the goal of the game is to find out who killed Mr Body, where and with what, so ultimately in the last ending the answer is Mr. Green, in the Hall, with the Revolver which is why he said it like that

@@JamesVSCinema Yugioh is probably a better game - Clue was invented in 1949 so it uses a few tropes that people probably wouldn't do if they designed a modern boardgame, like the rolling to move between rooms. You could spend turns trying to get to a room to make a guess which slowed down the game a bit too much for some folks. A boardgame channel I follow have a play through using an app kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWrTnJ2GnNBqoNU There is a game that uses some of the Clue/Cluedo's DNA to make an actually good game, Awkward Guests, but if you have a younger family (I'd say kids about 8 years old or so) you might want to try Small Detectives or Stop Thief instead which are two other deduction games. If you want a game to play with a group of adults, there is Deception: Murder in Hong Kong, which is a huge amount of fun - one player is the forensic scientist who has to give other players vague clues about how a murder was committed. Another player is the murderer, who is also a cop and the game is basically trying to work out which player the Forensic Scientist is trying to point out, while the murderer is trying to convince the other players to accuse the wrong people kzbin.info/www/bejne/npm3aJmYoNudadk

We've been watching this since 1985 in the theater in my family. I've seen it too many times to count. The cast are all stellar well-known actors, including Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Leslie Warren, Martin Mull. Even the singing telegram girl was a singer with the group, The Go-gos. It was played as the game goes where you have to find who the killer was, what weapon was used and where in what room. It was such a fun movie with Class A actors. And do you hear Madeline/Mrs. White in the group singing She's a Jolly Good Fellow and riffing on it? That became a joke in our house for years!

@James: Clue was a board game that was very popular in the 70’s and 80’s, well, until video games hit the market. These characters are named after the characters in the board game. In the game there are cards that represent either rooms that are possible locations for the “murder” (eg: the Conservatory, the Library, the Billiard Room, etc), weapons (eg: candlestick, rope, knife, revolver, etc), and suspects (eg: Miss Scarlet, Professor Plum, Colonel Mustard, Mrs. Peacock, Mr. Green, etc). At the beginning of the game, three cards are removed, one from each category (location, weapon, suspect) and placed in an envelope and put in the middle of the board. As the game progresses, questions can be asked, guesses can be made, and ultimately the winner correctly guesses from the clues provided ‘who dun it’. It was a fun game. You should actually try to play it with friends one of these days :) As a side note, there is no “Mr. Body” in the game, well, at least not that I can remember. (and there was no butler or maid or cook or anything like that)
@Stargazer_Ley
@Stargazer_Ley 2 жыл бұрын
Mr. Body is infact the dead person in the boardgame. Though in the UK version his name is Mr. Black. Miss White in the game (or at least the orignial/ version I had as a kid) was the maid. Also Green was a Rev originally. The game has been updated to add and remove characters and channel their titles.

An extremely underrated aspect of this movie is that every time they give a time until the police arrive... that's real-time. The movie runs minute-to-minute in time with the reality of the characters, and that's INCREDIBLE. It breaks down if you get super nitpicky about the individual scenes, but for the most part it holds up.

"I'm getting a particular 'Knives Out' feel." Funny you mention that. Knives Out mimics a lot of the 1970s/1980s murder mysteries, and for the interiors of the Thrombey house, the floors have the same patterns used from the Clue board game (which the set for the house in this film also uses). Knives Out actually draws a lot of influence from films like Clue, Murder on the Orient Express (1974) and it's sequel Death on the Nile (1978). Also, when it comes to Mr. Green and him being gay, the film's setting is the 1950s, where being gay was actually frowned upon. Yes, it's not something to be ashamed of, but due to the historical context of the 1950s, being gay was something a gay man could be fired for. In fact, a lot of classic Hollywood leading men and women in the 1930s-1950s were gay, but they had to put up the front that they were straight in order to keep their careers. Quite sad, actually. But a lot of people who have done reaction videos for this film all have the same kind of reaction but are unaware of the historical context of the film's period setting. The film's endings were originally planned with each of the group having their own ending to reveal they were the killer. However, it was trimmed down to four being filmed, which itself got cut down to three that you see (the ending that was filmed but cut involved Wadsworth/Mr. Boddy having poisoned everyone with the brandy and they all die, with Wadsworth himself getting killed by the dogs when the police show up as he attempts to flee). Each ending you also see was actually edited into various versions and released into theatres, meaning that each showing had one of them. So, there are some who saw it was only Mrs. Peacock, some that see it was Ms. Scarlet, and some that saw the ending where it was only the entire group who did it. Debra Hill, who was the producer of this film, was also the producer and co-writer of the iconic slasher film Halloween (1978).
