I'd like to see what you'd make of Final Fantasy 8. Particularly the intro scene and the Ballroom dance scene. As a game full of 90s limitations (and excesses), FF8 has tons of space for cutscenes and uses them constantly. But since this is early days, most of those cutscenes are people walking to a mark and conversations in text boxes. FF8 might be a good case for talking about some of the *very* basics.

You read Jhin (the "pianist") perfectly. He's a serial killer who thinks his killings are a form of pure art. He's always associated with art and music and that's why he bows to Camille (the metal law woman who's hunting him) like he's saying "Thank you for coming to my show, this is the grand finale". Also, he always shoots 4 times ingame and that's why there's one bullet left in his weapon when he bows (you can count his shots trought the cinematic). He has the best design in League of Legends imo. Also, the "cat" is Kennen, a yordle, and he looks more like a chipmunk actually 🐿 Great breakdown, this is one of the best LOL cinematics by far.

@@kaizammitKhada Jhin is nothing if not a showman. He massacred a theater full of people to draw Camille (sword legs) to him. She is one of the most scary and powerful forces in the region. In the comics, we see the aftermath of this event. Jhin was standing on a trapdoor in the stage. Camille hurtles towards him with her dagger legs, he bows and triggers the trapdoor, which drops him beneath the stage. Camille ends up eating shit through the piano because he is no longer there to skewer. He escapes. Khada Jhin with the big middle finger, lol!

14:30 her backstory is very appealing actually, and arguable the most impactful story in this bunch. Shes a relucant leader that needs to rally a extremely pacifistic country to fight back against an expansionist empire. A lot of nuance and interwining stories later, we end up here with her seemingly alone (in the grand scheme of things) on the frontline to hold back the new first wave of attackers. When suddenly the spiritual leader of the country shows up behind her with the shield. then a rouge agent from one of the main policying forces in the country runs past her. followed by 2 more established characters showing up later to complete the roster of unlikely heroes. its beautiful and inspiring for us league players. Fun fact, the circle she makes with her blades in that last shot mimics the Icon/Flag of their country, truly hammering home that at long last, the country is fighting back, and that her fight (with herself and her ideals) finally found validation

i LOVE your breakdowns and the way you explain things!! i’ve said this before but i’ve learned SO much about filmmaking just from watching your videos-proud to say that i knew about catchment and the power of a character due to camera angles and levels in this video because of your explanations!!! the character (the “cat”) that comes in at 31:59 with the lightning is named Kennen, and he’s what’s called a yordle in League lore-they’re a “race of spirits who generally take on the appearance of mammalian bipeds” (according to the League Wiki), and most of them are kind of fuzzy and look like little rat people. i honestly kind of see him as a cat as well! 😂 he’s centuries old, super powerful, and has projected Ionia (the “Shang-Chi”-esque lands that they’re fighting in) for hundreds of years. he actually also taught Akali (the ninja woman with the green outfit that jumps on Sion, the huge zombie-warrior dude)! thanks for another awesome video, Kai!

36:15 Jhin the character with mask is a psycho killer that is obsessed with the number four that see death as art in the way he kills. Sidenote his ultimate ability is even called "curtain call" it gives you four powerfull skillshot that make bonus damage for missing healt for finishing the "show".
@emhyrvaremreis5085
@emhyrvaremreis5085 Жыл бұрын
To give some context, the masked man is called Jhin, he is a psychopathic murderer in love with art and theater and that is precisely why he is represented in that scenario. The man sitting at the arena instead is called Draven who, unlike his brother named Darius, general of Noxus, is a person who only tries to attract attention and spends his time in the Noxus arena. The woman who is introduced in the arena is called Riven, I don't know her story perfectly but I know that she was trained by the Noxians to fight and the sword she holds is a very powerful artifact that they tried to get rid of, which is why it is fragmented, but somehow it always comes back to her. The woman with Asian features, on the other hand, is called Irelia and has never fought in a battle herself as the techniques she uses were only dance techniques that she was taught which she later discovered had the power to control weapons and blades, the scene represented it's a war called The Invasion of Ionia carried out by the Noxians. Sion, The enormous man is one of the many secret weapons of Noxus created with blood magic therefore he can be considered as an undead his peculiar characteristic is the fact that every time he dies they make him reborn, the jaw he has is very characteristic because If I'm not mistaken it is the crown of a king of another state. Then you can see a cyborg woman called Camille, she is an assassin recruited by Piltover (the state you see in Arcane) to kill and hunt in this case Jhin. The woman dressed in green who comes to Irelia's rescue is called Karma who in short is the protector of Ionia, she tries to keep the Balance of Ionia in a normal state. The man who throws a tornado against the Noxian soldiers is called yasuo, his story can be known through other cinematics made by riot. The "cat" is actually a race called Yordle, in this case the character's name is Kennen, unfortunately I don't know his story well. Finally, the woman who pulls the smokescreen in Sion's face is called Akali who basically has the same task Karma has except that she is: 1. Under the teaching of another character named Shen. 2. Compared to Karma, Akali is much more empathetic and this creates problems in her story.

i can help out with riven. As far as the lore goes until now; Riven was a Noxian Warrior who deserted while the first noxian invasion in Ionia (where the part with the red wearing woman happens) and lived there as a farmer to leave her past behind in a self chosen exile. Sometime later the Noxians were again in Noxus to search for her Weapon (the blade wie see in her fight in her hands) which she destroyed by herself (The completed sword is around as long as Riven is high). Well the Noxians found Riven on her farm and captured her to bring her and the remnants of the sword back to Noxus what is what leds to the arenascene. About the sword; the runes on it are not just some kind of art but something which contains magic in the sword. After Riven broke the sword the other pieces are able to arrange back to the former form. Ingame its kinda her ultimative ability. Other neat little detail; the last attack what we see is kinda copy and paste from a other ability in the game. She has one ability which can be used 3 times. The last Attack is a Jump with a similar flip which is able to "knock up" the enemy. So; even with Riven we can say Riot was really good in showing a few of her ingame abilitys. Sorry to geek out. But i love Riven as a Champ even if she is one of the most difficult ones in the whole game to play her at least on a decent level :D

Quick add-on to the pianist/Jhin context that's been mentioned previously: As others have stated, he views his kills as artworks, and some of his in-game quotes have him talk about gruesome deaths and "sprays of blood" as components of the artwork. With this in mind, there is a theory that his part of the cinematic is viewed from his point of view, as the composer of art, instead of what actually happens. Because of this, we see beautiful explosions of color and artistic lightning cover the cinema, instead of the mass display of blood and gore that is actually happening

This is all about performance or attention-seeking by the characters. First scene, the pianist, Jhin, is a serial killer that doesn't see his victims as people, but rather canvases. He is an artist in his mind. He is definitely putting on a show. He needs an audience. The task force, led by a cybernetically enhanced woman, Camille, does their initial sweep and approaches Jhin. Something you did not mention was when one of the guys got caught in the trap, her eyes changed color from orange to blue for a brief moment, then returned to orange. Her body was assessing threats, orange for physical harm, and blue for magical or energy. In the second scene, I love how the arrogant guy up high, Draven, and the gladiator woman, Riven, never lose eye contact. Draven, wants all eyes on him. He demands it and is somewhat like Jhin in that regard to captivate everyone. Riven, cannot be ignored, and that excites him. A challenger has finally arrived. The third scene has the blade dancer, Irelia, doing a performance for her battle style. Her motions are flowing. The hulking brute, Sion, interrupts her performance by being this unstoppable and disruptive force and takes the scene from her. It takes five to bring Sion down. In game, he is a juggernaut that is not easy to fell. Five is the key number here because that is how many players you can have on a team in the game. The cat is a ninja who harnesses the power of lightning. His race of yordles are furry humanoids. I wouldn't say he is a cat, but one of its cousins.

Interesting fact about Jhin. Its somewhat inplied that when his traps detonate or his shots hit someone, the flowery patern and bright colors are what he sees. What he thinks he is creating and "painting". When in reality, if one was to be a random witness to his killing, it would be a gruesome and bloody mess.

Excellent breakdown! Been waiting for this one after seeing your look at "The Call" There were a few details I was surprised you didn't mention even though you covered the concept (although we know there's a TON of detail in these cinematics!). With Jhin's penchant for drama and art, you'll notice he closes the piano cover just as his mines close on the intruders' feet and begins the musical rise in the strings (where we will eventually begin to hear triplets in the violins, helping add to the forward momentun). Also, when he turns to reveal his pistol, the camera does a small "hop" over the piano and pedestals down to show his feeling of control and power. The other small one you skirted was after Draven's smirk, you'll see Riven have her own smirk (post-headbutt), leading to Jhin's smiling mask and glimmer in his eye. Riot has done great work with these cinematics, both visually and musically (and using both as a cohesive unit). Quick example of that one aside from the obvious "door": in the first scene in Ionia, you'll hear the pitch going down as the camera moves down with the lyrics "and fate may fall down upon you", then both turn up to reveal the approaching army (camera tilts up, pitch on "you" rises) Can't wait to see what you do with "Warriors"!

The Pianoman, Jhin was one of two favorites of a now-former friend of mine, so I came into this one with a context for him (showmanship part is most relevant here, obviously), which gave even more wow-effect at the bow scene. The last shot is the most powerful and if you look on his back on the top right site u can see There is a little cannon where the 4th shot coming out. so basically he had the attack on titan girl in checkmate :D

Kennen - that little ,,thing,, :D Is a yordle, which is small fury race from League of Legends universe, i would think about them as bigger hamsters probably :D. He is a powerful hero, using lighting, turning into a spark. Most of the character moves in this movie are heavily inspired by their actual ingame abilites and interactions, that is the reason why there is not much introduction to the characters, because its expected from viewers/gamers to already be familiar with them.

after having watched the whole video your statement is even more preposterous xD You say "you need to be careful when you write stories. think how to make yours different". Brother at least you could have looked it up before assuming that riot copied marvel in any way.
@kaizammit
@kaizammit Жыл бұрын
I didn't think they copied it, I just wasn't able to connect with that set of characters or scene without a connecting moment with the character. Dialogue would have helped that. My comment regarding writing and creating is advice because everything has been made before, you've just got to think how someone aka the audience will connect with your characters or how to leave that lasting impression. I know I won't remember that scene until the cat shows up because that was a 'moment' or 'character' for me. An educational note for you, this is why you should stay away from very popular music when working with marketing, everyone will have a different connection with said piece of music and will be thinking of that memory rather than your product or whatever it is. This is why when a very well known song is used, Marvel trailers for example, it's changed drastically. You will still have that feeling of knowing but the connection you have wont be there.
@VV33Dy
@VV33Dy Жыл бұрын
@@kaizammit Thanks for the long answer. I guess i can understand i just dont agree very much here. About the music: Riot really understands their art - every song in League and Arcane is made SPECIFICALLY for that scene or animation or cinematic. Yes even the Imagine Dragon and Zedd songs are made just for League. Therefore they wont have the problem of running into "well know public music" being used for their creations. The problem often comes from those songs getting into mainstream channels like radio and other content creators using them and then ppl dont even know that they listen to a League song. At the end of the day Riot and Fortiche (their main art partner) do almost everything right that they could be doing.
@kaizammit

I'm not disputing music, this was fantastic and original, yes? What I said applies in the industry. Regarding story and connection of characters, what I said is also true as defining moments allow for human connection when watching and reading. You need that thing and it's different for everyone. Shang-Chi really left its mark on me I guess even though I've only watched it once. Hopefully that makes sense?

The only reason I brought up Shang Chi coming much later is they couldn't consider possible lines of familiarity being drawn by a piece of work not yet done is all.
