12:17 Delivery Man: "I thought you were in the Mafia." I wonder how many young folks would understand that reference today? Being Italian and Sicilian, I've heard a great deal about La Cosa Nostra, the Mafia; (Fia Mia), which used to be called La Mano Nera, or in English, The Black Hand. There were also the infamous Sicilian Mafia trials of the early 1960s. So, the delivery man's comment would have been easily understood in the mid-1960s.

Yeah it’s one of the few shows that handles the “blackening skin” jn a far more respectful light It’s not on their face, they don’t use minstrel tropes, it’s not just there for shock value and it’s never there for a laugh like a lot of other shows that have episodes like this but with “blackface bad” as a cover up lesson. It’s weirdly nice how it came out of the 60s which was very divided on diversity. It’s nice to know there were real people back the using tv for good and to teach a lesson
@deerejohn7209 Жыл бұрын
The 60's was a decade of change, and yes I was there. Too many people just looking to pick apart the past. Seeing Dick Vandyke and Mary Tyler Moore was indeed fun to watch way back when this show originally came on air.

Who said it was?
@teijaflink2226 Жыл бұрын
I don't know if it was common in the 60s anymore but there are many old shows (thinking about Tom and Jerry as example) where they would have used this opportunity to make racist jokes, this show didn't but used it to talk about equality instead.

@bluewheels3980 Жыл бұрын
There is nothing racist about this episode. In fact Karen if you had bothered to listen to Dick Van Dyke's speech at the end it is quite the opposite. Seems to me you're the type of person that looks for divisions has no understanding of nuance or worse yet willful ignorance of it all in a vain attempt to make yourself feel more important
@DR-mq1vn Жыл бұрын
What are you talking about? This isn't racist.

This actually handles this in a way some poc have said is very subversive and uses the trope of “blackened skin” in a way that’s not offensive and pretty forward for the time. And yeah that sentiment isn’t said to everyone I’m sure some people are uncomfortable by the episode and that’s valid I just like how they very much taught a lesson well here
