In my country 4K releases are extremely expensive yet, costing almost the double of a regular blu ray, so I'm (very) slowly upgrading my collection into 4K. I have the MGM box trilogy because I never liked the that yellow color grading of the previous edition. But now I'm excited to get at least this edition of A Few Dollars more, looks really good

Kino Lorber weren’t responsible for the yellow tint on the previous Fistful of Dollars Blu-ray. The restoration team in Italy were (I think their name is L'imagine Retrovata) and they always get shit for tinting their movies that way.

A request for future review: Filmworker, on blu-ray, a documentary of Stanley Kubrick's long time assistant Leon Vitali. Vitali had a major acting role in Kubrick's Barry Lyndon as the nemesis to Ryan O'Neal's character. After that movie was finished shooting, Vitali was so enamored by Kubrick's film making process that he quit acting to learn nuts and bolts of movie production from the master and never left his side. Outside of Kubrick's immediate family and in-laws, no one knew Kubrick better and probably Vitali arguably knew him better than anyone on his film making process.

I’ve never seen any of the “Dollars Trilogy” films but I pulled the trigger and recently bought these two films as well as The Good, the Bad and the Ugly all on 4k straight from Kino Lorber because they have a fantastic sale going on right now. I’ll watch them in a few days when I get time to. Question: does the Blu-ray on Fistful of Dollars still have the yellowish tint on this release or is the color grading corrected like it is on the 4K disc?

As I need to take into account import costs and have a 48 inch oled my plan is to get the 4k fistful of dollars, pick up a used Blu-ray of kino few dollars as there are likely to be quite a lot around with people getting the 4k and pass on the good/bad/ugly.

You kept banging on about A Fistful of Dollars colour grade correction from the old BD to the new UHD but you never addressed whether the included BR in the new UHD release is from the new master or whether it’s the same older BR disc? I would have thought that would be important to highlight even for fans who don’t have 4K yet, as it would still possibly be worth the upgrade to have a corrected BR release. So is the included BR from the new master and have the corrected colour timing?

I hate, and I mean HATE, when they try to color correct movies and some intern leaves the settings on "modern movie LUT that looks yellow and cyan". (This, Terminator 2, Batman, etc). It looks terrible and it's not how these films are supposed to look. Like, I understand that with 10-12 bit color gamut, sometimes the look of a film can shift a bit, but not to that degree. So happy they fixed it.

It seems all the special features were actually made for the DVDs. I never got the blu-rays, and I recognized the name of the special features, and I know that historian did a bunch of commentaries for most of Sergio Leone's films for DVD.

These films were shot in Techniscope meaning that a significantly less surface area of the 35mm film stock was used to capture the image than what would typically be used for films with a scope aspect ratio like these. Leone had to do it as a cost-savings measure since it used less overall film stock. The point being that I don't understand the comparison to 2001 which is a 65mm print with several times more image detail that a 4k scan can pick up and benefit from. Without the benefit of HDR, and knowing this is the same source as the 1080p Blu Ray, the 1080p to 4k jump on these films is going to be marginal compared to most 35mm films, and certainly compared to 65mm films like 2001.

@@Gobzer5526 Considering the Blu-rays are out of print, they weren’t that impressive anyway, there’s multiple cuts in existence, and there’s lots of footage they need the rights to, a completely new release from the ground up would be great for the 40th anniversary. I’d even settle for a 4K-mastered Blu-ray. And yes, Once Upon A Time In The West is coming from someone, that inevitable. Duck, You Sucker is going to be Kino, and Once Upon A Time In America is going to be WB if anyone.

I have all three of the "Man with no name" 4k releases and they are good but I am disappointed that The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly is not the full cut version but the American cut version which has many scenes edited out. The restored version blu-ray has the original cut that fills in many story plot holes such as where did Tuco get his gang from when he went into town to kill Manco and Angel Eyes visit to a Confederate camp hoping to find or get more info about Bill Carson plus other added back scenes. Still, I think The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly has the best looking 4k version of all three films.

Since this is 7 months old, I don't expect a reply, but it'd be appreciated. So I found an ebay listing at what I considered a good deal that came with all three movies. Fistful of dollars and a few dollars more came sealed with the slip cover. The good the bad and the ugly had no slip and was opened got it for 97 with the tax and shipping included. My question is about the slips, they feel different from all my other movies that have them. Like in terms of the glossy plastic feel they have compared to all my other slipcover movies that don't feel like that. It reminds me of the big lebowski I got on etsy which came with a custom slip. Feels just like that which has me wondering if the seller just re shrink wrapped them with fake slips or if that's how they feel lol

Over youtube I don't see any difference on my 4k sony XF90 display. I don't know if this is because of youtubes compression but no increase in pixel counts as in all the lines are exactly the same. in all of the comparison shots. The eyes, the wrinkles the vegetation everything is identically same. No extra details and I came to like 10 cm distance from the TV just to see if there is going to be anything. I will be watching this in UHD blu ray though so I am actually expecting difference but via youtube there aren't any differences perceivable except minor increase in field of view.

Good reviews ... but it gets a little more complicated with Leone Dollar trilogy especially when it comes to color grading. For those who are interested I'd recommend the KZbin channel Damn Fool Idealistic Crusader. He's done extensive reviews of the 4k disks and in the case of The Good, the Bad And The Ugly an interesting home video version history.

Now, your saying it's not necessary...? KL don't deserve to have the dollars trilogy and reviewers who get sent FREE review copies need to stop making excuses for companies who try to get away with taking short cuts and then go and charge a premium for it.

Hi Steve, all 4K discs are region free, you can play any disc from anywhere in the world. However the standard Blu-ray, will be region locked, so unless you have a chipped player you won't be able to access the special features as they are usually, but not always, on the 1080p disc.

I have never seen the other dollar films, and this is probably the only western I’ve seen in its entirety..I purchased the soundtrack on Amazon’s streaming service, and the language used is Italian, which always perplexed me.. your breakdown has given me additional insight..I love learning new things about my favorites.. thank you…😎.. I love this series but without HDR or Dolby Vision I'm gonna have pass on this one homie you have films much older than this that have HDR and Dolby Vision 🤷‍♂️ but i loved the review anyway ✌️

@@slave_to_cinema why the biggest selling factor of 4K UHD is the HDR and Dolby Vision more so than resolution over regular blu-ray 🤷‍♂️

Can you not see from the screenshots how the coloring, in Fistful of Dollars especially, is way, WAAAYYY better on the 4K? Even without HDR, it is still a MASSIVE improvement and certainly worth the upgrade in my book.

@@Cbriggs502 I have always been iffy with HDR on masterpieces like this when the director can’t share input. Watching these films in 4K on my giant television was such a treat. These films have never looked better, they look like a pristine film print which is what I prefer with older classics like these.
