I'd say Ash from Evil Dead is a good example of a final boy.

This was an interesting episode. Coming into this, I was vaguely familiar with giallo, but I'm not a huge expert on the topic. I've seen Deep Red and the original Suspiria before a few years back. I remember enjoying Deep Red, but I can barely remember it. As for the Suspiria remake, I actually love that movie more than you guys. I know I'm in the minority on that one. Tbh, I prefer the remake over the original Suspiria. The original 70s movie is colorful, and I love the aesthetic, and the score is decent, but that movie didn't work for me as a whole. I don't dislike it, but it didn't leave that much of an impression as the remake did. I also didn't feel the film was too long. The remake improves on certain aspects that were lacking in the original. For one, the dancing actually plays a part in the witchcraft as opposed to the original. Secondly, the death scenes had more stakes and were aggressively brutal. I like my horror to be upsetting. Plus, I actually cared about some of the characters as opposed to the original where the deaths felt comical to me. The remake has a darker tone, and I liked that the movie has more on its mind with tying the Berlin incident in the background. I didn't feel Tilda Swinton's psychiatrist character was wasted. I liked his role, and his final scene is an emotional gut punch. I'm with Chai on the soundtrack. The soundtrack is easily one of my favorite aspects of this movie. I disagree with the claim of calling Denis Villenueve self-indulgent. Then again, this is coming from a fan of his works. (Yes, I'm not afraid to admit my bias). So yeah, we differ in our opinions, which is fine. The recommendations you selected sound interesting. I've never watched Knife + Heart. I believe it's on my watchlist, but I'll check it out. I can't promise that I'll like it, but I'm willing to try new things. Tbh, I'm not a fan of the term, slasher. I know movies like Halloween, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984), Scream, and Black Christmas (1974) are considered slashers, but I never cared for that label. Sure, there's killing in those movies, but there is more to them. I'd put Nightmare on the fantasy horror side instead of relegating it to slasher just like I would put Scream (1996) as a satirical black comedy horror film instead of labeling it a slasher. Idk, that's just me. Camp is an acquired taste for me, meaning sometimes it works for me, and other times, it doesn't work for me at all. I still enjoyed this episode. I'm catching up on these videos.
