He probably has PTSD, causing him to go into a state of psychosis and develop DID. His way of coping was through finger puppets and theater, since multiple times he mentioned he was a singer. I personally think this series was his trip to recovery, earning him feeling accepted by his family for who he is. Aka; him recovering, and his family opening their arms to him due to his recovery. The hat, in my opinion, symbolizes a trophy of some sort due to his recovery. It has the face of (most likely) the person who helped him through his states of PTSD and Mental disorders, Milford. Whether he was a Doctor, Nurse, or even a best friend, he's the man who helped Salad cope and recover the most. That's my theory on the matter, it could be completely wrong but I like the idea.

Probably a scared man, trying run from whatever is hurting him in his mind, from the "aunt" part, she might be his caretaker or friend, we also see children a lot, with the horse bit and Jeremy, he or his family were hurt in some way, especially with the "Hubert" bit... Considering the war was nearly 20 years ago, he probably also had severe ptsd or other issues that clouded his mind, making him think his brother and friends that he made were alive. That he was ok. That all he was seeing is real. That he is Hubert, that he is who he said he is.

I love the salad fingers series it really represents the broken human mind and just how powerful the mind itself. Its like a lens, either you see whats there clearly or its distorted and its not the same compared to whats actually there like its cracked, or should I say, Broken. Salad fingers has experienced so much pain and he reenacts it in a way maybe to cope with it or feel alive instead of internally dead because of memories.. This series is disturbing but truthful in a heavily metaphoric way and I love it and how it represents our phsycologic "lens". it really leaves a lot of mystery

I have a small theory: I think when Salad Fingers is talking to Mr Branches, he's also rehashing prior experiences from his childhood. Hallucinating the face of a younger self, a child, I think Salad Fingers adapts the role of either his mother, or father, I'm more leaning to the idea that it's his mother, considering the next scene is of Salad Fingers giving birth. I researched after hearing the line that goes something like, "You've got a poorly, we'll have to get some vinegar and-" I don't know the line exactly, but vinegar is known to bring more bacteria to a wound. Considering in Episode 11, you see his mother actively poisoning him, I don't think it's far fetched to believe that this was him reliving a memory of his mother increasing the pain of an already lethal, possible inflicted wound, I believe that when Salad Fingers was talking to Mr Branches, it was actually a fractured memory of Salad himself, where he's acting as the mother figure. Something that supports this, is the line, "You'll have to grow out those branches if you want to get inside." And, "Those cacky spider-fingers aren't going anywhere, Andrew-Hands." I know this was said by the Glass Brother, but it demonstrates a similar form of abuse. This was just a theory I thought of, I could be wrong, it could be the mother, the father, the brother, but since the brother has been hinted to have died, I edge more to the idea of it being his mother. Note: in Episode 11, Salad says, "It's not fair, I've been in here too long, I'd like to come out now." Which links to the line towards Mr Branches. "It's not fair, i've been in here too long, I'd like to come out now." "You'll have to grow out those branches if you'd like to come inside."

Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water, Jack fell down and broke his crown- while Jill came tumbling after! Up Jack got And home did trot, As fast as he could caper; Went to bed To mend his head With *vinegar* and brown paper. Jill came in And she did grin To see his paper plaster; Mother, vex’d, Did whip her next For causing Jack's disaster!! It is just a medicine I'm sorry but the interpretation it was meant to cause disease is counterproductive, if anything it shows an amount of compassion and a time period but I am very passionate about the Vinegar. Vinegar is amazing

Now, I'm not much of a theorist, and I agree with like 95% of what he says in this theory, there's a tiny bit at the end that I don't agree with. I agree that salad fingers is a WW1 vet, who is suffering from some form of shell shock, or PTSD. It seems to me that the very last scene doesn't refer to his family. I think that it refers to other soldiers who were in WW1, maybe even soldiers that he fought alongside, which is why he refers to them as "the platoon." Maybe because they were actually in his platoon. And that's also why they're also identical to salad fingers. Every single one of the salad fingers is another veteran, each suffering from their own problems, whether its PTSD, a severe injury, or an amputation that sets them apart from everyone else. This is why salad fingers feels like he has a family with them, because he doesn't feel like he fits in with the rest of society, but he fits in with other wounded soldiers. Each one of the salad fingers is broken and damaged by the war. They're all broken, but they're all together. Idk, I'm not a very good theorist, but I thought it made sense. But hey, that's just a theory, a fan theory.

YESS!! thats exaclty what it is. Also, the name salad fingers may had been his nick name during his time in war that his platoon named him. That guy is clearly suffering from PTSD or shell shocked which originated during WW1and his reliving all his dead friends lives. This happens to veteran soilders, just read the things they carried by Tim O' Brien

Maybe. It's not wrong to disagree with a theory, even a small part. That being said, I wonder about this one. Why then did Salad Fingers say that his brother went off to the great war without him?
@AaronTheReaper94
@AaronTheReaper94 8 жыл бұрын
I think the reference to the platoon at the end proves he was in the war. The members of his platoon were all injured or decaying in some way. He left his disapproving family to go to WW1, where, in the trenches, the color of his skin did not matter. All of his platoon mates died in the war leaving him alone, left by the one group he felt accepted by. After which he returns with PTSD broken from reality. The imagery of the disfigured salad fingers at the table is to represent his fellow soldiers, disfigured by the war, note one has a bullet hole, one is missing a chunk of his head like he had been hit with a mortar. Also all of the imagery around the eyes is similar to the imagery of monsters in gas masks (see mustard gas). He felt abandoned as a baby and child, when to war, and returned feeling just as abandoned by his dead platoon mates. edit: also his use of the air pump in his chest closely resembles an iron lung.

This is my theory: Once upon a time, there was a black soldier named Jeremy that fell in love with a red-headed white female. When the girl's father found out about their relationship, he killed Jeremy and lied to his daughter that he ran away. But it was to late. His daughter was pregnant with Hubert (Salad Fingers) and Kennet. The girl died during the birth, but the children survived. Hubert and Kennet were raised by their mother's sister, that hatet them because of their skin cocor. Then the WW1 started. The brothers went to fight for their country. The other soldiers in their plutoon nicknamed Hubert Salad Fingers because of his long and slender fingers. In the war, his brother and his bestfriends died, maybe in front of him, maybe not. When the war finished, Hubert was all alone. His own family had died. And then, he fell in love with a girl that gave him a baby. The girl ran away and let Hubert, A veteran with PTSD, all alone to take care of the baby. He couldn't raise the child nor let him with his aunt because he was scared. What if she will raise the baby how she raised Hubert and Kennet? So Hubert killed the baby. And in the end, at the table, there were Kennet and their friends.The plutoon. All dead. Hubert was happy. His family is with him, eating together, maybe Hubert's own sanity, but he was happy. He could die happy. And in the end, I think that he died all alone and because of that he could be with his friend at that table. But hey! That's just a theory!

I always partially wondered if the inspiration for salad fingers came from psychological cases that have been documented and then turned into a animated series. This analysis just makes me feel even stronger about this. Either someone's own psychological problems, or those documented of a patient that were just so mind boggling that they made for a great twisted cartoon. Just a thought, A FILM THOUGHT!!!

And salad. It's composed of a lot of different vegetables. There's another theory in the comments that the table of other Salad Fingers is actually other veterans, hence saying "the whole platoon" was there. And, if that's actually the case(alongside considering someone so mentally broken would be in a facility in reality), the "salad" could be the absent company of other soldiers whose mental faculties and grasp of reality has long left them. But also just a theory. A film theory.

So, to summarize: During WWI, a black soldier impregnated a white woman in the UK and, after the woman died during childbirth, gave the baby (Saladfingers) to its aunty and fled to France, because he didn't wanne care for him. The aunty was cold towards the baby because of his heritage. Then later, Saladfingers became a father, the mother left him alone with the baby and he gave the baby away, because he wasn't able to care for it. Also, his brother died. Right?

The father being dead/having run away makes sense. If the aunt raised the half and half child, she's be just as disgusted with the father as she would with the child. She'd wish the father was dead, or think he was better off dead and would refer to him as such. Or it could be the opposite. The aunt tells the child his father ran away because he couldn't look after him, but he'd actually been killed by the child's grandfather. In that time, people would happily just accept that kind of excuse because the majority didn't care about non-white people.

*I have a theory for the new episode of SF, so if you don't wish for spoilers, look away.* My theory is that the plot of Episode 11 is of Salad's memory as a legitimate father, who I'll refer to as Hubert for the remainder of this theory, and the memory of a possible custody battle between him and his family over Hubert's son, Hubert Cumberdale Jr. Somewhere along down the line, Hubert found himself a wife and had a child with, Hubert Jr, with his "flesh-boy" as a substitute. The reason that he refers to Hubert Jr. as a "new and improved Hubert Cumberdale" is that he has hopes and aspirations of Hubert Jr. being a better and more successful person than him, due to potential self-hatred from the constant bullying from his family. Hubert Jr. also shares Hubert's love for show tunes, which was probably handed down from his father, Jeremy, as Hubert Jr's dream is to be a dancer. While Hubert's family treated him with disdain and cruelty, they showed an odd affection towards Hubert Jr. It eventually came to a head when Hubert's mother and father tried to claim custody of Hubert Jr, with the help of Hubert's older brother. After Hubert's mother won, Hubert Jr. lives with them until Hubert eventually fights and regains custody of his son, resulting in even more hatred from his family. After this, Hubert almost effectively cuts them out of his life, yet he holds a fond image of his mother, as seen when Hubert puts the last shard of the mirror in a chest with a soft, purple pillow at the bottom. This theory can also play into why Hubert has memories of Kenneth as a Great War veteran. He doesn't want the image of his brother to seem negative to his son or outsiders, and possibly even to himself. He makes up grandiose stories of Kenneth being in the Great War, of all the good memories they had together, etc. etc. The reason Hubert might refer to his mother and brother as "glass mother" and "glass brother" is because he never had a real connection to his family, that there was a "barrier" of sorts between him and the rest of his family, like a window of sorts.

Well, Having worked at a nursing home, the frame of the story to me is this is the mind of somebody with severe dementia. Salad Fingers has suffered some sort of stroke, and is trapped in this nightmare of incoherent memory resurgence. I think the details in this analysis is right, but the framing should be an old lady in the nursing home. Salad fingers is the mother.

When I watched the whole series (an hour ago) I thought that Salad fingers couldn't make it to the war, where his loved ones (like kenneth) died. Now, knowing that kenneth probably died young and his other loved ones probably also weren't in the war, I think that salad fingers might have convinced himself that everything was lost in war, when he was the one who lost himself/his mind.

*[Long explanation of some things missed]* What MatPat did not clarify enough that Salad Fingers' exact disorder, which I believe to be extreme Depersonalization Disorder which "is thought to be caused largely by severe traumatic lifetime events, including childhood abuse, accidents, natural disasters, war, torture, and bad drug experiences" all of which Salad Finger was shown to have experienced. Salad Fingers simply does not express the symptoms of someone with Schizophrenia. Hubert Cumbertale is most likely Salad Fingers' real identity, however at this point he has been so distanced from himself that he has forgotten it, even forgetting the puppet's name in episode 5. The name he introduces himself by, Salad fingers, is a juxtaposition of his real identity as a Butcher (huBert c). The idea that he enjoys the texture of rusty spoons (the first thing mentioned in the series!) and pain indicates his longing to reconnect to the real world. By the end of the series he does reconnect to the real world at the table, as uncomfortable and messed up his family may be (like himself). OH, and to explain Harry (Milfred Cubicle), perhaps as he has 'BBQ' written on his clothes, he was a customer or friend of Hubert Cumberdale when he worked in the butchers. The fact that he jokes around with him in episode 10 shows he was once friends with this man (hence him being present on the 'friend hat'). In episode 3, he hangs him up on a MEAThook, which shows this connection.The ending is also not as happy as MatPat assumed as it only confirms his unwillingness to accept death which was apparent in this whole series such as him not liking the giant pole which literally reaches up to heaven. But yes, by the end, he has finally come to grips with who he was and is, in all his and his family's faults.

Hubert Cumberdale is Salad Fingers? NOT POSSIBLE! If Hubert Cumberdale is Salad Fingers and Salad Fingers is the baby born of Jeremy Fisher; then how does Salad Fingers/Hubert Cumberdale remember all of the conversations between the Father of the Daughter and Jeremy Fisher? It's not like Jeremy Fisher and the newborn's mother or ANYONE will re-enact all of that in front of their child; therefore, there's NO WAY Hubert Cumberdale could re-enact all of that if he was actually the baby. It would make A LOT more sense if Salad Fingers was Jeremy Fisher. Jeremy Fisher's child could have been aborted by the doctor and that's why Salad Fingers avoids all things connected to babies/infants/embryos. It's because he saw what the doctor did to his potential child; ripping an unborn embryo out of it's mother. That tree is where the baby was buried and it's why Salad Fingers visits the tree everyday; he's visiting his child's grave. Also, it explains why he would view the doctor as someone whom would TEAR into the side of the horse with claws and why the horse was crying. The horse representing the mother of his child and she is crying because the baby was ripped from her body by orders of her father. Also, the Father running away could have been because he was racist and ashamed of his daughter being mother to a black man's child. Word got around that his daughter had "jungle fever" and the Father ran away in shame. The whole "Salad Fingers" episodes could be Jeremy Fisher re-living all the racist things people have said to him. The whole story could be about all the racist things people have done to him. The whole story could be of how he feels alone in that world with very few people around to even talk to.

@conundrum60690
@conundrum60690 8 жыл бұрын
Hmm.... i think Matpats wrong here. First of all, i don't think Saladfingers is a guy, i think it's a girl. Specifically, its a woman who laid with a black guy, was disowned by her father, and had her baby aborted because of it. Her psyche broke because of guilt over the abortion, and because of her family treating her as soiled due to her having sex with a black guy. She always wanted to sing in France, but after her one bad decision, getting pregnant ruined her life. 1) While some males can lactate, it's extremely rare. And given this was in the late 30s, it's unlikely a male would be in in a saloon like that. 2) How would "baby" Hubert know about the birth? Or remember any of that? Or remember the black father who died when Saladfingers father confronted him? 3) Pregnancy actually explains a lot of weird things from this series. Take the obsession with rusty taps, women during pregnancy, are often driven to eat strange things out of a hormonal drive to take in unusual supplements. Some women eat dirt. A rusty tap would give more iron in her water. 4) An abortion would also explain the violent imagery with the doctor cutting into her. It could be a C-Section, and then she puts the baby up for adoption, but that wouldn't explain the fetal imagery. 5) I'm thinking the black guy was buried beneath the tree, and she see's the tree as his, "seed" growing up from the grave, and her walking away from it, by allowing it to be aborted.

When his eyes are yellow, they are representing a mom talking, but when his eyes are red, he's representing a dad, just for the scene on the bed. This is because Salad Fingers says"Bottles nappies smiles and wee, to my heart you found the key. Blah blah blah blah blah." Then, he brings it up to his face, saying "Ah, you got your mother's eyes. And she was a fair maiden too.." which is something a father would probably say. that's all I got. Also, listen to him say *HAD.* Which means whoever's the mom is dead.

Shaky Tabluno -Please don't refer to him as Hubert,- also that couldn't be true. I thought it was the same, but when he was in the middle of talking, it even switched. Example: his eyes where Yellow when he said "Bottles nappies Smiles and wee, to my heart you found the key- Baby Yvonne is born today, the heavens say she's here to stay." Then they turn red when he says "ah, you got your mother's eyes"

My theory why salad fingers is so...off is because when his brother died he was so down about and mad that he killed himself and still roams the earth in search of his brother
