He's my take: Jeremy got a young woman (probably the flirtatious persona) pregnant between the time he enlisted and the point he left to fight (flying out to find France) Once he realised, likely from a letter he received, he took leave (the letter about not coming to the front) in the hope that he could do right by her and marry her, perhaps he really did care for her. But when he got there her father was waiting, the reason he was so sure of Jeremy's intentions was because he had proof of them. Not wanting his daughter to marry Jeremy he killed him instead, possibly to prevent them running away if he simply said no. Thus leaving the soon to be mother to parent alone, likely disowned herself for what she did. When Salad was born his mother may have needed a C-section (Yvonne being born from Salad's stomach and the horse scene suggest this) Salad was fine but his mother, who was alone (the concerned 'mother' reassuring her was likely a midwife) developed some complication, maybe infection. Knowing she was seriously ill and possibly going to die she decided to give away her baby to Aunty Bainbridge, a woman who had just lost her own son Kenneth. Bainbridge took Salad in but she was still grieving, constantly comparing salad to the son she lost. The brother he never knew but was lead to believe was so much more a man than he was. Bainbridge and Kenneth are where the glass family comes from. They *are* Salad's inner self hate but manifested as the two people who lead him to believe he was less. The reason glass brother looks like Salad is likely a mix of hating his reflection and the fact he never met Kenneth. The 'real boy' symbolism and the fact that the baby Salad gave away could mean one of two things: either Salad was born baby Yvonne (or even Marjory when you consider the hair cutting) and Bainbridge, after losing her son decided this child could be her new little boy then when Salad grew she criticised him for not looking and acting like one. Or it could just be symbolism for him being less masculine than what was expected. Either way it's possible Hubert Cumberdale wasn't Salad's birth name, the radio insisting he get rid of his hair collection seems to imply Bainbridge wanted to erase his 'old family' from his life completely so he can be her property because that may be how she veiws children- As property. Which would also explain her willingness to shut down any form of self-expression because she needs full control.

In a similar way, the way this episode trails after "Birthday" reinforces the theory; in that episode, Salad came across a "family" of other Salad Fingers. Note that they were all disfigured in some way - *monstrous* - and they didn't even acknowledge his existence, but he loved them anyway, just like his Glass Brother and Glass Mother are his family but are undeniably horrible. If "Birthday" was about Salad finally finding a family to fit in with, then "Glass Brother" was Salad realizing that that family was only hurting him and escaping it to live more positively with his upgraded son/self, Hubert Cumberdale.

So this may be a little late but the “hip bone” in the drawer is actually a cervical bone. Which is one of the bones in the upper spine or where the neck would be. I think glass mother is salad finger’s grandmother in the real world because his mother died in childbirth and the grandmother had to take care of him after she died. This would explain why she doesn’t like salad fingers. His birth caused her daughter to die and maybe sent her husband to jail for killing Salad’s father. Salad’s father would be the character leaving to France (or back to the war) to escape his possibly accidental child. He comes back early only to find that his girlfriend died in childbirth and he is then killed by her father. Salad is then raised by his angry grandmother as she waits for grandfather to come back from jail.

i love the theme of internalization in this series. everything salad fingers says to the puppets seems to be directly inspired by what his family has said to him, glass brother is literally the voice in his head telling him he's not good enough, glass mother is the trauma and past of abuse that he can't let go of, and the entire storyline of a child abuse survivor having a child of their own which causes them to start dealing with and healing from their own trauma is very popular and an amazing way to explore a character's psychological complexity.

TWO THINGS: 1.) I can’t help but think that glass mother and possibly father are actually his grandparents… saying that his dad ran away and his mom may have died in child birth SO his grandparents (who hate him not only because of racism but because he “killed” their daughter) are forced to raise him 2.) I LOVE how this series addresses trauma at the end with the book. As my therapist has told me, my trauma is in a little shoebox in the closet. Sometimes I take it out, look at it, understand what happened and how it affected me, but at the end of the day I can’t put it away.

I also really like the idea that Salad could be ending generational trauma - as though he’s noticed himself pushing his upbringing onto Fleshboy (shown by him being taken into the mirror world) and instead choosing to become the parent he always wanted to have. It could also give a bit of clarification to the last line of “wait til your father gets home” because Salad was born without a father, but knows he doesn’t have to wait for it anymore, because he’s a father and isn’t going anywhere.

A lot of the power in it comes from the symbolic recognition of flesh/the body, mirroring the process of flesh-Hubert in the rest of the episode. Glass Mother isn't "just" a reflection or a memory or entity; she is something that HURTS him. She hurts his emotional body(the entity represented by Salad Fingers) and she hurts his burgeoning connection to his physical body(flesh boy) by denying him contact with it(self). By ritually enacting the harm caused by Glass Mother(being his own self-simulation of parental trauma), he's able to turn it into a tangible artifact of PAST harm, harm that HAS happened - rather than being always and forever still-happening, as it seems during a state of neurological trauma-arousal.

But this video was very eye-opening for me. When I first saw this a few years ago, I was much less mature and didn't think about it much. I love the symbolism of that final bit of glass. In the world of fiction writing we call a character's fatal flaw, the thing holding them back from achieving their goals, the "shard of glass" since no matter what they're doing how or hard they try until they stop and address whatever bad memory or mistaken belief is causing them to make the wrong choices they won't be happy. Salad Fingers finally confronting his abusive childhood and self-hatred and putting away the, now tiny and far more manageable, glass shard is a much more uplifting and hopeful ending than the original episode 10 ending.
It’s also important to notice how at the beginning of the episode he rips of most of Margery Stewart Baxter’s hair leaving a few strands left and then Glass Mother also only has a few hairs left. You know because she’s Hubert’s mom and Glass mother is Salad’s and they’re the same person.

So on top of salad fingers, one of the other cartoons David Firth has made is one called spoilsbury toast boy. It's a shorter series, but it's much more shocking and scarring than this one in my opinion. I think glass mother bears a striking resemblance to the grandmother in spoilsbury toast boy, as their voices are very similar, they both sit in rocking chairs, and aside from skin color they look very alike. Additionally, the grandmother in spoilsbury toast boy asks the main character to fetch her a speckled Huckleberry leaf, which is what glass mother tells salad fingers to add to his soup. I don't know if there's any correlation, but I think it might be worth looking into.
@CycleSwift5 жыл бұрын
Marisol Barrett Spoilsbury toast boy is terrifying.
@puzzle-man3115 жыл бұрын
I don't think there is a correlation, you might be disappointed. I noticed this as well and honestly what I think it might be is David Firth simply deciding to use old content / idea's in his new stuff as more people will see it and it makes the process kind of easier when it comes down to making new episodes, you know? I do this kind of thing in my own creative work, if I'm stuck or if I need a new idea for a project, I'll take elements or scraps of stuff I've done in the past but didn't feel really went anywhere and I'll expand on it / improve on it by putting it into my new projects. I think that's what David Firth has done here... I'm not saying he's unimaginative though, obviously. The man has an imagination. I just think what he tends to do sometimes is take inspiration from... himself I guess, haha. Try this kind of thing in your own creative work and you'll find it's so fucking convenient. "Hmm, how can we make this interesting?" *scans through previous work* "damn I was really fond of this idea but it didn't go as far as I'd hoped, I can use this again in some new kind of way". This is what David likely did with the Grandma from Toast Boy. I mean think of the concept hahaha, he took THAT character and decided to merge it into the Salad Fingers world: "Now that would be interesting". I think we can, if we wanted to, create our own interpretations and correlations ...you know? It's just, I don't think David Firth intended for there to be one :( nicely spotted though!

When Glass Brother talks, Salad's head doesn't mimic the movements of his reflection. But when he talks, the reflection in the mirror mimics his movements. That's an interesting detail to note
@sydneymarwitz15513 жыл бұрын
Here's my theory: It started with Jeremy the sailor "de-flowering" a yound girl, and then giving birth to salad fingers, aka Hubert cumberdale. Jeremy the father left, leaving salads mom to raise him on her own, only to have her die in child birth. Another person commented that now that he is an orphan, he is raised by his aunt, who he considers his mother. Salad grows up dealing with a lot of hate, because he is mixed and has girlish tendencies. Here's where it gets tricky, I think maybe salad was born a girl but has masculine qualities and wants to change his gender. His aunt (glass mother) and glass brother (conscience) think it is a bad idea. when Salad changes Hubert, aka himself, into a "real boy" he is finally happy, however his glass family is not accepting and tries to take his new identity away. He overcomes the hate, and finally accepts himself for who he is. Idk, that's what I think, lmk what your thoughts are or what I left out, there's diffidently a lot.

@swordwielder28542 жыл бұрын
@@jols._.9835 Yes your right now that i think about it you remember that scene when mr salad fingers goes on wheel chair to give his baby to aunty brainbridge I think thats how his real mother gave him to the aunt aka "aunty bainbridge" and it also when salad fingers gives birth to his baby he says that his time is close which means that his mother died soon after the birth and gave salad fingers "aka hubert cumberdale" to aunty brainbridge.
@swordwielder28542 жыл бұрын
@@jols._.9835 Also i think Yvonne is the girly name her mother gave to salad fingers when she was born but aunty brainbridge wanted her to be a boy so she probably named her "Hubert cumberdale" So this also answers the question that weather salad fingers is a male or a female.
@jols._.98352 жыл бұрын
@@swordwielder2854 I totally didn't think of that! But then isn't glass mother supposed to represent his mother? Maybe he was raised by the aunt and called her mother and called his cousin brother? Him not being the actual child of the family would make sense since he was treated so poorly and called a "dirty immigrant"

I think that him cutting himself with the glass shard at the end represents the pain that he went through with glass mother, but now she is blocked out by the pain that she created, hense the covering with blood. Spoopy

That wasn’t a pelvis in the drawer, it was a vertebrae, one of the one towards the bottom of the spine based on the structure of it.

Megan Nall-Cook l think it’s the cervical vertebrae of a horse. It’s a reference to Horace Horsecollar

Wonder if this represents something like Salad Fingers being spineless against the negative influences until he is reborn

Hold there, as someone who watched the whole stream he just said: Where that flesh comes from? Making us think it was probably from Milford or maybe someone else.

I know it's kinda weird to comment on such an old video but I wanted to put my personal opinion out there. I think Glass Mother and Brother aren't entirely manifestations of Salad's self hatred, but also represent how trauma breaks you. How you see your abusers in everything. Everything reminds you of what happened to you when you haven't healed, or been allowed to heal in the first place. Glass Brother looking exactly like Salad also makes me think of how some people see their abusers even in themselves. I think the ending is really touching, especially for someone like me who has experienced childhood trauma. Salad understands that the abuse he endured will always affect him and be a part of him, but he doesn't let it define him. He doesn't hang on to it. He lets go of what happened in the past and moves on to the future, as seen when he locks the shard in a box. It's similar to this but I think my opinion is more accurate. Sorry if this comment is a bit jumbled or anything I just wanted to get my thoughts out
