DENJIRO: Today, I’m going to perform an experiment to show you the principle behind an air purifier. You can see that there is a mesh filter inside the air purifier. So how exactly does this get rid of dust? Let me use this container here to demonstrate. There’s a filter attached to the top of the container. In order to make the air inside the container pass through this filter, I’m going to use this syringe to create air flow. Inside, there’s candle soot, which is acting as dust in the air. You can see the soot if I shine a laser at it. Now, let me create a flow of air. Keep your eye on how the light from the laser changes.
GIRL: The light is getting dimmer!
DENJIRO: If you compare side by side, the difference is clear. Since the air passed through the filter, the amount of dust that was reflecting light has decreased. If we look at the filter, we see that it is darker. The way this contraption works is that the filter catches the dust in the air, and clean air is returned to the container.
Some air purifiers use static electricity. There’s a piece of aluminum foil sticking out from the edge of the container. There’s also aluminum tape on the inside of the top lid. These two pieces of aluminum are not connected. Inside the container, this time I have smoke from incense instead of soot. Since the particles of smoke are smaller than soot, the filter can’t catch them. Now, let me generate static electricity and send it inside the container through the aluminum foil.
Compared to before, when I didn’t do anything, the light from the laser is clearly dimmer. By charging the smoke particles with static electricity, they get drawn and attached to the aluminum tape on top. This is the principle behind an air purifier that uses static electricity.
NARRATOR: As you can see, some air purifiers use a filter while others use static electricity.
DENJIRO: I hope energy will bring you all happiness. Our magic word is "Happy Energy!"
