In the UK, on the borders of Dagenham and Essex, a doomed row of soon-to-be demolished terraced houses have received some unexpected tenants…
A group of migrants have set-up home in the squalid conditions and are squatting illegally. There is no running water, waste collections, or other amenities and the group are quickly creating their own environmental hazard by simply throwing waste outside the house. As a result, they have attracted an army of rats.
Council Enforcers. Rob and Rob feel sympathy for the folk simply wanting a roof over their head, but the amount of waste (and vermin!) accumulated requires immediate action. Since the land is private property it is the owner’s responsibility to arrange the clean-up, so they quickly track him down and it’s not long before a big grabber arrives.

As a Canadian, it's confusing how much British law and British courts actually protect squatters. Until the law changes, squatting is a civil matter only and not a criminal offense. The problem will return.

@@jaydub2546 pretty sure it was 12 years , if they hadnt broken in etc, an old lady died in my old home town of Lancaster and she owned quite a few properties in Lancaster and Morecambe in the early eighties , around 1985 some new age / street people got into one of them in Lancaster and they used to come in the local pub , they told us they had contacted the council and started paying rates/ community charge or whatever it was called at the time and also had the electricity put back on and were paying the bill , fast forward to about 5 years ago and i was back in Lancaster and i asked a mate who still lives close by to what had become known as the squat and he tells me that the original guy who moved into there and set everything in motion had got the house as his own because he could prove he had lived there for over 12 years and no one had challenged his ownership

That’s the problem with absent landlords, particularly in London. You can always tell when a house is rented. The lawn is overgrown and the weeds take over, discarded furniture, and broken down cars in the garden, and waste/recycling isn’t sorted properly, so the council refuse to empty the bins. The landlord doesn’t care, as long as the property value is increasing; and the tenant doesn’t care. It’s just difficult for people who have a stake in the area, who are paying a fortune for their home, to live amongst them.

Part of the problem is that the countries where the squatters come from often have a much lower standard of living than we usually have in the U.K.. So, they are likely more used to those conditions in their environment. That doesn't make it right, but it might help to explain the residents tolerance.

I've worked with refugees all of my working life, and one of my colleagues was one bitching about some people that had come in from Congo. A highly war torn country. I just told her to shut up. She had no concept of what it might be like, coming to a totally different world, where these people didn't even know how to use a lock, an electric kettle because they didn't use them at home. On top of that, they had lived with the possibility that they could die, every day, and now they were in a place where literally no one spoke their language. I can't imagine what that must be like. I don't know how successful I would be, in the same situation.
