I'm this case definitely--- I can't go to Grandma's house because she is a Hoarder and there's no room in her house for me. Oh yeah my Dad won't have me in his perfectly neat and sterile house because he can't cope with "kid mess" Touche-- you're situation is worse. Ben isn't a bad person but he's mentally ill and it's definitely negatively effecting his family. It's very sad. Life is too short to live this sadly. 😢
@laminage5 ай бұрын
You got that right! Have you seen Midwest Magic Cleaner, or Aukaterina, they are brilliant. It's more mental. Also with other Hoarders at least from American Soil, it's always some sort of past issue. Didn't have much growing up, lost everything in a fire. A solid professional person could come in and help. If his Landlord/Landlady saw this, Ben would have been evicted.

I suffered like this all my life until 2010. I then left London and moved to the countryside… There is so much dust and spiders , that trying to stay on top of cleaning was ridiculous. It’s been 13 years now and I have absolutely managed to calm down. I am not held hostage by my house and my condition anymore. I learned to take control . I have my gardening , the gym , my 2 cats and other activities that take up my time. Having the cats helped my ocd …. You have to learn to live with a bit of hair with animals. So my house is tidy now . I clean once a week halfhearted. Then once a moth a deep clean. Life is good.

My house was so bad that I couldn't have my child over, so I deep-cleaned and redecorated the whole thing, now I keep it reasonably tidy, but not obsessively so. I only had to motivate myself to actually get on top of it, the fact that my son's mum was having addiction issues and social work got involved made it much easier, he needed to be removed from that environment and it was up to me to create an environment he could thrive in. I want a harder, just depressed and unmotivated, but now I feel happy and motivated- tidying and having my child living with me has improved my mental health, the inverse struggle with obsessive cleaning seems even more detrimental! I can tolerate the clutter my child creates and just tidy when he's at school, if I couldn't, he'd have a very sad upbringing, I'm glad to be able to give him the stable home he needs, even if I don't get any time to myself to do the things like dating that I thought I'd be doing when the place was this nice! I went from not being well enough to manage my own life to managing two lives! Took some adjusting as it was a very sudden transition, but apart from being a bit lonely for more adult connections, I'm much happier!

I like how this version of “hoarders” doesn’t just show that the hoarding is an illness that affects one’s life, but on the opposite end, a person who has OCD also suffers and misses out on life. I also notice the UK version doesn’t have any hoarders (so far) who have like dead cats underneath the piles.

Watched so many hoarder shows, they all come up with the same excuses. Exact same rigidity / stubborness as OCD people, applied to different concepts. "I see potential in everything, Im environment-oriented, this is still good, I can sell it for profit, Im attached to this, it was my mom's, I spent X on it, can't throw that away, I I I I I get to decide, not someone else" ...

They're not 'excuses'. Hoarding is a clinically recognised mental health condition related to OCD. If you have compassion for one condition, you should have compassion for the other.

It's nice to see there are men who actually clean their house. Where can I find a guy like this? 😃 I understand the need for his house to look 'perfect' but not sleeping in his bed is crazy. Why have a clean house if you can't use anything? I imagine he doesn't have time for much else. Keeping everything perfect is time consuming. I've tried myself in my apartment. I have the same tendencies with cleaning.

Many hoarders once they get sorted will become better - never going to be perfect but can be better than they were and recognise when they are getting to a state they maybe need to reign it in again. Unfortunately, Ben has a mental block where he cannot see that his obsession lining things up and cleaning things that have never even been used over and over is just as damaging, if not more so. Gerri will allow a mess while having fun which can be cleared up afterwards. Ben won't allow the mess at all and fears enjoyment if it could cause a disruption in his perfect ideal. i know which one I feel most sad for......... 😞

IMO. Being TOO clean is just as much ‘out of the box’ as the opposite. Worst are hoarders who very often won’t let go of things that they never use, are broken, out of date/fashion or they have many of the same thing. They amass a hoard of stuff that stops them from moving or sleeping in their home, can be a fire hazard or can have/hide an infestation. They live in a tip and will not change. They are the biggest nuisance and I speak from experience. I honestly have no time for them.

Ok what did they do with all her stuff because it looked like only the books were left and if she's a crafter that's not what she would do even if she gave up on the projects there would still be tools. It all looks great for the camera but doesn't seem realistic. Her idea of reusing everything while noble meant that nothing was actually getting used and was going to rot away inside her home. I think what he said was very sensible. Stick to bringing in one project at a time. Finish it, let it go and only then consider bringing in something new. We can't rescue everything even if we can see the potential in it. It's very easy for crafters to bring in everything that they have an idea for but you have to be realistic about how much time and room you have to dedicate to these projects. As for poor Ben his house did look lovely and clean but it could still look like that with a fraction of the time he dedicates to it but I understand that it's his anxiety that he is fighting rather than dirt. It's just a shame that his illness means he can't allow himself to actually use it. I clean my hob daily but it takes minutes at most. (Induction hobs for the win!)
