I know it may seem like it at first glance but the main difference between a collector and a compulsive hoarder is collectors only collect things of particular interest and take good of it and are usually psychologically healthy whereas a compulsive hoarder just hoards all manner of worthless items even rubbish and don't take care of anything and find it very difficult to let go which is usually triggered by a traumatic event in their life, that's really the main difference.

That is a very difficult difficult situation to put these helpers into. He’s not a hoarder. He is definitely a collector and I totally get that myself because I buy things also.. things of beauty and things that speak to me. Some people might look at it and think it’s trash, but it’s not to me. My sister lives in a minimalist house, but I don’t. my mother had stuff all over the place. It was ridiculous. Did she dust? No. She couldn’t. But things were picked up. I think when did wonderful wonderful thing here. Hopeful that he is inspired to do the rest of the house on his own. And I’m so glad that they both were so patient with each other.. And thank you, Glenn for putting yourself at his disposal to help him. I think you made a difference in his life.

I was rightfully bullied into retirement. . . Sooo thankful I chose to leave. I am off 3 medicines and am living MY life now. A phrase I had to throw out the window is "what would people think." My dad was an antique “collector” too but also hoarded tools, art supplies, photo frames, lamp parts… It was wild. Luckily he was super organized so it wasn’t a huge mess. But sometimes it felt like our house was bursting at the seams. Anyway, his collecting started because his Dad threw away and his brother destroyed some of his toys like the hot wheels and action figures he would keep in the box, just like this guy. This is why parents need to be so careful about respecting your child’s belongings and autonomy. Because not doing so can trigger a lifetime of putting more value in possessions than relationships and experiences. My Dad died young and spent way more time with his s*** than he did his family, unfortunately.

David would be an interesting conversationalist but really needs to curate and recognize that there is a minimum level of clean which is necessary for good health. His home is a fire hazard. If an item is shoved in a box and not used or displayed, it is hoarded. That can be hard for some to recognize.

My apartment is minimalist, neat, organized---I will not have decorative "things" sitting out, and the only decorative items are my own drawings hanging on the walls. I'd love to have a person like Glen come in and clean, though. I maintain what appears to be a clean environment, but in reality, it is not because I'm in chronic intractable pain, so it's very difficult to do the cleaning I want to do---like getting down on my hands and knees to scrub the kitchen and bathroom floors. I'll have to seriously think about hiring a cleaner---cleaning crew of two---to do that, I guess.
