A lot of people choose a field of study because of personal interest (duh). For psychology and things like food science this often means people with issues in those areas will become professionals in them. From personal experience, I think about a third of people studying food science have tendencies toward problematic eating. Mostly anorexia. I expect similar numbers in psychology.

Okay, Gordon testing that hotel room caught my interest (and everyone else's, considering it's the most rewatched section of the video) so i went looking for the device he used for that test. Bear with me cause this kinda turned from slightly piqued interest to a quest for the truth (apparently i was bored enough to actually look into this for a couple of hours). I apologise for the wall of text in advance, i tried to condense what i found. Basically, the test takes 'ATP' (adenosine triphosphate, basically what (any) living cells use as fuel) from the sample taken, mixes it with a reagent that gives off light when combined with ATP (interestingly enough, apparently the same chemical that makes fireflies glow in the dark), and then measures the light, which the device then expresses as a unit in RLU (relative light units). This is that number of 5680 RLU from the shower curtain for example. Note: this is not the 'volume of live bacteria', as Gordon suggests. The device doesn't measure that. I found the device's company's guide to ATP monitoring. What Gordon says is indeed what those guidelines state as the 'standard setting' for the device. A lower limit of 10 and upper limit of 30 RLU, 30 being considered a fail or 'not clean'. BUT... The guide also explains that this number is set to be used for a stainless steel counter top, that has just been cleaned (!) as a benchmark for whether you've cleaned that surface well enough to prepare food on! It goes on to explain that any kind of porous material (anything harder to clean than a stainless steel surface) should have very different values set to be considered 'dirty', depending entirely on the surface you're testing, what environment it's in and how clean you want it to be, considering that environment (a couch doesn't need to be as clean as a dinner plate). I tried to dig deeper to get an idea as to what kind of RLU is a more realistic number to hold to. Long story short; it's not easy to get a conclusive answer. The guide for the device states that you should clean a surface to the 'desired level' of cleanliness, take a measurement, then use that number as your standard. That doesnt help us in this case... So i went and found several numbers from medical articles and research papers to see what kind of numbers hospitals keep to. I'll say right away that hospitals apparently don't use this test (much), outside of maybe their kitchens and maybe standard nursing wards. To test for bacterial cleanliness hospitals use actual microbial tests, among others (duhh). Kinda makes sense, because the RLU number really only tells you that what you found is organic and roughly how much there is, not what it actually is.. And also different surfaces will give wildly varying results as stated above. It's fast, and a good broad indicator, but that's it. There are some numbers to be found though; apparently, somewhere between 250 and 500 RLU is a decent indicator of cleanliness in a 'standard' nursing ward. Again, this is DIRECTLY AFTER cleaning! Another set of numbers given was anything under 1000 RLU to be considered 'clean' and anything between 3000 and 10.000 to be considered 'contaminated'. Between 1000 and 3000 is apparently 'meh' (officialy; 'intermediary') by hospital standards. Like 3.6 roentgen: not great, not terrible. However, and this is where it gets interesting... I did find several articles that actually looked into and tried using ATP tests as a sort of global indicator of cleanliness and to benchmark hospital cleaning procedures. One study found that across several different surgical wards, the average number found was 292 RLU. A few tests gave numbers ranging into the 100.000's (control unit for a bedpan washer was the biggest culprit there). And this is in actual SURGERY wards. Makes that first number Gordon finds (573 RLU) not seem so terrible now. Of course, there could still be all kinds of non-organic contaminants in that airconditioning unit. Most interesting though were two short research papers that used ATP testing to check their actual Sterile Processing Department! These papers used actual numbers from actual tests performed on medical implements like endoscopes but also surgical tools, before and after cleaning. The 'before' numbers ranged anywhere between 100.000 and 1.000.000 RLU (yes, a million). The 'after' numbers were somewhere between 15 and 150 RLU (numbers varied between papers and different implements). One paper concluded a good benchmark for 'succesful' sterilisation of medical implements should be below 50, with 50-100 being reason for 'caution', and anything above 100 RLU to be considered a 'fail', prompting an investigation into what was going wrong in the cleaning process. And this is under hospital conditions in the sterilisation department. As stated above, all of these papers were (just) looking into this, i never found any official guidelines. Hospitals simply use other tests and standards for this stuff. I guess they consider this test a chainsaw where they prefer to use a scalpel. Though, fun fact; chainsaws were first used in hospitals, to aid in amputations... And that concludes today's lecture. There's more, but i'd probably start boring people to death. Also, don't take my word for any of this. I advise anyone to look these kinds of things up themselves, you never know what you might learn! Don't believe everything you see on t.v. boys and girls! TL;DR: - Yes, 30 is the device's standard setting for 'not clean' (not 'dirty', just not sufficiently clean). - No, it does not measure 'volume of live bacteria'. - Different surfaces and environments (will and should) give wildly varying results. - The standard setting of 30 is meant for FRESHLY CLEANED stainless steel in the food and beverage industry (read: working surface inside a kitchen).

2022 update on the hotel: As of 2022, Brick Hotel is still open and serving patrons in Newtown, PA. However, reviews for the hotel are not very good. It has just a 3.0 star rating on TripAdvisor and the original restaurant has a 2.5 star rating on Yelp. A lot of the negative TripAdvisor reviews seem to still focus on the ownership and service. People also complain about alleged “bait and switch” practices where they book one room but are given a different room on arrival. However, the restaurant now has new ownership from what you saw on the show. It’s called Rocco’s at The Brick and it’s an “Upscale bistro featuring fine seafood & meat-centric dishes in classy, warm surrounds.” Reviews for Rocco’s seem a little better, but it still has a 3.5 star rating on TripAdvisor.

UPDATE: the owner spent a lot of time trashing Gordon on TripAdvisor going as far as saying she “never met someone she disliked more than Gordon Ramsey”! She claimed his changes made her lose “hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue” 😂 and that she reverted back to “country cost”. All in all, they have a 4/5 rating so it can’t be all bad.

13:06 So the housekeeper lady has no responsibility? She is talking like an outsider. The owner may be very very very faulty but why doesn't Gordon put any blame on the lousy employees?

Is no one wondering how Gordon Ramsay's team renovates the whole hotel in one night ( even changing the floors as you can see in some clips)
@agatheagaesse89332 жыл бұрын
I am as well, as (I think) everyone else. But I’m guessing it’s not just a night, more like a day or two and they’re very prepared ! Like beforehand, waaaaay before the episode is shot, they build up a plan and a very effective team so that it can be made in a small amount of time. (There must be a lot of workers involved)
@silvanad32732 жыл бұрын
I wonder how much that costs and if the revenue from the episode is enough to cover rebuilding a whole ass hotel or if they just change the entry, the dining area and the two rooms. They never show bathrooms or kitchens(which usually are in bad shape)
@moadej2 жыл бұрын
As far as I know they don't do the whole hotel , just the main places like reception , dining etc . And a few rooms as examples for the owners to replicate in the future.

Remembering my AIESECer times in Panchkula, in 2015... The school principal was even worse than this lady! Every info had to be asked from her, but through my EP manager only. Basically I was a target for her and an infamously disrespectful student from a rich family, who wasn't even disciplined due to her parents' donating to the school, made the best of it. They conspired against me and that's how I got dismissed, like how dare I discipline that girl. Of course the EP manager also stood by her, in order not to lose her as a business partner. And where I am now? The teachers and the rest of the kiddos miss me and I contact them. Wazzmore, I've got them contacted with media, education and visa consultant Chandra Shekher who stays in Kőszeg, West Hungary, for higher education counselling. Looking at the teachers, some have left that school since 2015 - and I have guesses why. I hope they haven't got severe PTSD thx to that horrific principal.

@Персик-н2к2 жыл бұрын
Yep, exactly, I'm not sure how one person is supposed to deal with all of that. I don't even know where you would start with cleaning all that. Like the owner would need to hire a professional cleaning team at first and then after they clean everything out (all the grease, shit and mold) hire housekeeping team to keep it clean. I'm not sure you can clean all of this with just a bucket of water, a mop and a bottle of fabuloso. Edit: I'm sure those rooms need to be fully soaked in oven cleaner.
