Gordon gets the shock of his life
Gordon continues his mission to fix the failing Town’s Inn in Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia despite having to shut down the hotel after witnessing some shocking food practices.
These are some of the worst Ramsay has encountered; some so serious they threaten the lives of the guests, as well as the life of the hotel.
Gordon is left in even more disbelief as he uncovers some even more terrifying cleanliness issues. Gordon quickly realizes he’s going to have to change this stubborn owner in order for the hotel to have a chance to survive.

I'm not a psychologist or psychiatrist... that said, that lady could be in a deep, deep depression. She clearly doesn't care about anything, her clothes, hygiene, the hoarding, quality of life, the apathy towards her employees, the constant smile, the denial. I really hope this change helped her.

I've worked in homes for the elderly (and i have chronic depression) so I can tell you that these symptoms are more telling of a beginning of dementia. She's old, very stressed and isn't really able to differentiate between right and wrong, and she has a lot of trouble seeing things from other people's point of view. The fact she very clearly doesn't understand how dire everything is, is also rather telling. Everything you mentioned are not necessarily symptoms of depression. On the other hand, I also believe that it is dementia and not depression based almost entirely on the fact that: 1: she still keeps herself busy. She sweeps the floors and chats with others. She doesn't hide away in her room and doesn't avoid confrontation. People who are depressed have trouble getting out of bed and getting anything done. 2: Her tone, apathy and emotional stagnancy. These are all signs of dementia. People who are depressed, even and especially when they have given up, are emotionally unstable. The fact she didn't get angry or cry or blow up, or even seem upset when confronted with issues is a sign that they aren't reaching her.

@@Proserpira That last sentence of yours says everything. I dont think she ever showed honest emotion throughout both episodes. It seems as though she has adopted a habit of responding in a way that she has seen others respond or how she thinks others expect her to. She is a shell. But this also makes me think that the cause is something more than dementia. Something that has been with her for a very long time.

the fact that she doesnt react emotionally whether its bad or good news is strange.. well after she saw her new room I guess she showed more signs of happiness, but all throughout the episode she just smiles and has nothing to say, which shows she either doesnt know what shes doing wrong, or that shes given up trying. She also mentioned she doesnt want to burden her son, so she acts as everything is going well. So happy to see how the inn got transformed. I dont know how the son is having his old mother run a business.. At her age she should be enjoying life. Gordon is a saint.

Everyone seems to love the lady. Let me just say something: just because she talks softly and smiles doesnt mean she is nice. The state of the hotel doesnt make her a bad person but the way she talkes over her staff doesnt listen and then blames them in my opinion is super rude. Also when the chef was clearly upset and she kept interrupting him blaming him and then finished and “softly” said you can talk now was so fucking disrespectful. In my opinion she is manipulative be it meant that way or not its still infuriating.

And then everyone starts to blame owner, because she doesn't do her work properly. In my opinion, the cook could clean his kitchen without permissions, if he wanted to. But instead of doing this, he blamed the owner. If someone doesn't give a damn, it doesn't mean that you must behave in the same direction. You must be better, and even if you see crap around you, don't lower yourself to the same level.
@user-wk4zi2vt2s
@user-wk4zi2vt2s 2 жыл бұрын
@Impractical medicine Yeah, I'm agree with everything. It's better to use new equipment. You can't clean anything when everything around you is crap. However, no one forces him to work there. If he wanted to quit, he could do that, but instead he continued working there, even if there was a mess. He lost his passion in cooking, but if he wanted he could find another place to work with his 20 years of experience, if I'm not mistaken. So, we have a guy, who tried to fight against this system, but eventually he turned into one of its part. I know only one thing: If you really want to do something (cook), you will do it, despite anything (filthy kitchen or finding new place to work). But if you won't be able to succeed, don't blame everyone for things you haven't done (Karen), but only yourself. Even Gordon didn't understand him at first 😂
@user-wk4zi2vt2s
@user-wk4zi2vt2s 2 жыл бұрын
@Impractical medicine Yes, it's true. In his age it's quite difficult to find a job, even if he has such experience and also in small town like in this episode. Nevertheless, he doesn't need to show to Gordon, that he really wants to change this place, if he accepted the way it is previously. That's why I'm most concerned of. I can understand his way of living, because mine is kind of the same. But blaming others won't solve the problem. So you fight against it, the system (Karen's kitchen) or be the part of it. This chef is not bad, he can cook, but the way of thinking is not good. And by the way, look at his gas stove. It's very dirty, and drying fat everywhere, and if he wanted to, he could clean it, even with dirty water

Most of these owners reverted back we all know now. Except a few genuine ones who wanted to change, like the one episode with a crippled husband and his Japanese wife(Susan?) with their hotel beside some University. He gave them a new home too, and this lady here too, if I remember correctly did actually change her ways after he left, so it was life changing for very few.

But the food, the ingredients, isnt she's the one who is restocking it (the rotisserie chicken and so on for example). I mean like the funds of the kitchen is from her basically. Idk, cmiiw. I guess she's just not built to be a hotel owner that's all, despite her smile and her calm. Idk it just doesnt feel right for me. Jeff is frustrated with his work. When u told ur boss this and that needs to be done and fixed but no one listen to u, there's a limit where u just follow what ur boss say since it's ur livelihood. Kitchen managers take care of restocking. If there isn't one, it's the chef's duty. On the other hand, she wasn't the one who bought the place. It was her son who bought it and "gifted" it to her so she could "enjoy her retirement". Of course she's not fit to be an owner. She's a school teacher with no experience or knowledge. Knowing Gordon as being a tough person to deal with especially being a chef it's scary to see him deal with this kind of property and having to hear those heavy, painful truth from him, but I don't think not many people realize he has a good side that wants people to improve, like how happened to Karan's place. Despite the harsh words from Gordon, he wanted to help her so bad that he even rented a place for her to stay and send her to salon for a makeover and for a fresh start. After all the renovation and improvement, it's like a big "awwe" moment in my heart how Gordon left a heartfelt advise to the rest of the employee and also Karan that left her saying "Oh, I don't wanna see him leave" after Gordon left that door.

Recently lost my mom and this entire episode completely broke my heart. I do not see the passive aggressiveness and animosity others are accusing Karen of in this episode...I see a woman who is very lost, very lonely and possibly (most likely) mentally ill. Honestly she should live with her son and his family; I know it's not so accepted in the US but she raised you and took care of you, the least you could do is return the favor especially when it's incredibly obvious that she is suffering in a lot of ways. Letting her sleep the way she does is disgusting and he doesn't seem very concerned by it at all. It's like he bought this Inn as an alternative to putting her in an old folk's home; to try and get her off his back. I feel heartbroken for this woman. She seems incredibly fragile and like she has gone off to la la land because she couldn't handle reality and that is just too sad. Her smile is so endearing. I'm sorry but I don't think there is a bad bone in that woman's body. What Gordon did putting her up in a REAL HOME is what her son should have done. The way she said 'I know' when he said he should have to sleep there said everything. She just cannot afford NOT to. Did no one see the smile on her face? She doesn't want to live that way, her son lets her. The only asshole here is him.

Turns out, auntir wanted us to take care of grandma. No one in my family is a nurse. We don't know how to care for someone with a degenerative mental illness. What we do know how to do is make decisions. We do that pretty well. We put grandma in a retirement home, visited everyday, she was happy for once. Then we go to visit one day and she's gone. Auntie checked her out. Haven't heard from her since. Caren 100% has a mental sickness like alzheimers or mania. The blame lies on her son.

An old person who clearly has issues with her mental health.. instead of the son helping her with it he gives an entire property for her to take care of it? Do you even know what old age looks like? There are clearly signs in the video where she is going through multiple problems but isn't even comfortable telling her own son. Best comment award!❤ i thought she had no family and was really suprised when the son showed up. It's really messed up, putting a person with that state of mind and habits in charge of an inn coz thats a recipe for disaster. Instead of buying her a house and a small shop to sell her baskets which she loves to have a peaceful retirement he bought her an inn. The fact that he's a majority shareholder and ain't doing shit to help her and let someone with zero business experience in charge, shows that he's living well off wether the inn does good or not! He's just as guilty as her for everything if not more and chef Remsey went easy on him.And how can a man let his mother, his kids grandma sleep on planks,in the kitchen. he's a dickhead! He just kept giving her money putting more pressure and stress even when he saw she was not coping well. And she doesn't really seem like a bad person. She's just a bad businesswoman with bad habits and mental issues. Didn't hear her yell/swear at someone once. She clearly worked herself to the bone all her life without breathing and going on holidays, pampering herself and eating at resturants to know common sense of our modern world and her pallet shows all that.
