What do you guys think of the new features coming to FCP?!
@jeffarballo1881 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the update Jenn. I was going to go but my wife got Covid so I had to cancel. Anytime there is an upgrade to FCP it's great, but I think Apple is still way behind on FCP. I'm not really believing that they haven't added some features because they just weren't ready, I mean some new basic editing platforms that have been out for a short time already have text base editing and subtitles. If Apple wanted to have FCP up to par it would be. I believe they dropped the ball somewhere and now they are trying to play catch up. Hopefully FCP gets back on track because its so fast and we've done 3 feature docs on it so I don't want to see it go anywhere. And I will see you next year at the Summit.

The lack of auto-transcribe is terrible. I cut a lot of internal videos for the company to update everyone on new developments and I need to manually add captions, which might be one of the most time intensive parts. Apple’s FCP team is either too small or too ignorant about what users need nowadays. Gone are the days of catering for just the cinematographers.
@WarrenPeaceOG10 ай бұрын
What solutions are people using for auto-transciption and editing text to edit video? Anyone using Builder? For the longest time we were transcribing, editing the text, then manually searching FCP for key phrases to find the speech that made the cut. It could only get more old-fashioned if we used scissors and glue to create the paper edit

Thanks for such a fabulous and detailed insider's look, Jenn. I appreciate it very much. It's surprising the the FC Pro team is just now finally adding a fixed playhead. I've been scratching my head over why it took them so long to add such a basic, basic, basic improvement to something so fundamental.
@JennJagerPro Жыл бұрын
From my understanding, this feature has been in the works for a very long time. The challenge was redrawing the high res waveforms in real time without skipping frames during playback.
@stevepavlinadotcom Жыл бұрын
@@JennJagerPro Hmmm... as a former game programmer myself, I find it REALLY hard to believe - okay, impossible to believe - that this was actually the reason for the delay. If that were truly the issue, the FC Pro team would have to be deeply deficient in basic coding skills, which seem unfathomable. Even a relatively novice game programmer could devise multiple viable solutions to make this feature work, like simply caching a lower res version of the waveform for display purposes. How much data is actually needed to render the waveform in real time? I mean... it's NOT a lot of data to refresh or to render per frame, especially relative to the picture. If that's the reason they provided for the delay, it's simply not credible from a tech standpoint. It's far more likely that this problem kept getting punted forward due to internal politics, team conflicts, or for some other non-technical reason. If the hardware can render a full screen video playback without skipping a beat, it can surely render a smaller video plus the audio waveform simultaneously.

Ooooooh… hot dude at 2:01! Thanks for the shoutout! 😊💕 But just for the record re: my stance on Keyper vs. SRM - and as my video shows - I'm in no way saying that Keyper is bad or useless. I'm only going by my direct comparisons that you can see in the clip where Keyper completely failed _in comparison_ (e.g. with anything *not* human first and foremost), but also note what it is most definitely great for where the SRM fails. And I don't know who told you that I took issue with *your* opinion on it! (all liiiiiies I tell ya!) I (unfortunately) didn't see your sessions and didn't know until just now that you have a video on Keyper. Will have to watch! I also don't think Apple is going to drop Final Cut any time soon, but my real fear is that they target it as a supercharged iMovie mostly focus on edit for Iphones and Ipads content... Because this is definitely the way it's been going in the last few updates already. Think about it, even when we got advanced features like HDR support, or ProRes RAW or HEIC support, all these came along when Apple mobile devices got the function too... Which make sense, don't get me wrong, but meanwhile we still don't have any AI integration, no text based editing no auto-captions, no tools for collaborative workflow, no log color wheels, not even an adjustment layers without third party 🤷🏽♂ I love Final Cut, and I don't want to have to have to learn another NLE, but I kind of already do, just in order to grow my network and team up with people...

I've been on FCP since day one and recently dumped FCP for Resolve. As far as I'm concerned, having used FCP for more than two decades, the past five years, Apple has almost completely ignored FCP and the FCP community. Updates have been few and far in between the past few years and when they do update, it's just bug fixes and a few little not that impressive features. I see no new innovation and the sheer lack of updates shows what kind of priority Apple places on FCP. I think a lot of younger, newer editors never experienced when Apple was fully committed to FCP, high-end Hollywood features and episodic were regularly being cut on FCP, Apple would introduce updates with dozens of new features at least once or twice per year. The difference between then and now is stark and it has been inevitable. Apple is basically an iPhone company now that also sells some computers. FCP no longer sells high end Macs because the move to Apple Silicon has basically negated the need for 99% of buyers to even consider a "high end Mac" since even a mid level or in come cases, a low level Mac is more than adequate. Apple decided that old school editors would die off and to invest in the iMovie Pro audience, which was possibly a smart business move, but it never did endear FCP to working pros, and even younger working pro editors, I doubt very many came from learning to edit with iMovie. From Apple corporate's POV, what purpose does FCP serve? Hollywood no longer uses FCP. It no longer sells high end Macs. I honestly don't even think Apple cares THAT much about selling computers anymore, they're an iPhone company now. I still have FCP on my edit systems and will still occasionally use it but Resolve is a much more capable and flexible tool. What kept me on FCP for so many years was the flexibility in comparison with how you could accomplish specific tasks in any of several ways, while AVID was very rigid and would only function doing things the AVID way, FCP was very fluid. With the advent of the magnetic TL in FCP X, ironically FCP has now become a lot more like AVID, there is really only one way to edit that the magnetic TL is designed for. Sure you can hack your way around it but to use FCP most efficiently, you are pretty much stuck with only using the magnetic TL. Sometimes thats a good thing but often, it can be a PITA. I like the magnetic TL and have gone withthe flow for years, but occasionally more arcane edit tasks can be a PITA to deal with it. I like that Resolve has two different edit pages and you can choose the mode you want to use at any time. The audio mixer in the old FCP was actually pretty capable and even fun to use and mix outputs with. FCP's audio capability now is very basic and primitive in comparison. The color correction tools, while capable, are very basic in their function, granularity and capability in comparison to Resolve, CC in Resolve is a whole world unto itself. I hope the FCP team can dig FCP out of the early 2010s and make FCP more competitive with Resolve. Editors don't really want flashy bells and whistles, they usually want speed, reliability and the ability to meld with the tool so that they can concentrate on telling great stories, not to fight the software's weirdness or clunkiness. Users also want to see that the company that makes their editing software wants to keep on constantly improve it and BMD is incredible with this and Apple simply isn't, action or lack of it, speaks volumes about user perception. I personally think BMD has already won the war and the war is over but perhaps the FCP team can prove me wrong. I hope so, but I have moved on from FCP for most editing.

There's an engineering concept that's called, "If ain't broke, don't 'fix it'." Well, Apple "fixed it" by making FCP X. The person who thought the awesome visual metaphor that is FCP 7 could be improved was absolutely WRONG. To this day, I still have an Mac with Mohave O.S. so I can still run FCP 7. Had Apple "Just" kept making FCP 7 compatible with each new operating system and NOT killed its compatibility -editors would mostly opted to KEEP FCP 7 -even if there were no changes or improvements -because FCP 7 was not "broken." But Apple knows better than an editing metaphor that has been around for a hundred years. Also, be warned, after Apple killed Aperture thus leaving thousands of Professional Photographers PISSED just know, that, at ANY time the bean counters could kill ANY program at Apple even if thousands of professionals use it. Even though about half of the Professional (big-time) editors left Apple because FCP X Apple did NOT admit their mistake -they just plowed ahead with what editors called "iMovie Pro." Sometimes, thinking differently is thinking wrongly.
