Hope you had a good Christmas trip up there. I'm sure you had quite a bit of snow to trek in through. I was doing a little winter exploring down some back roads in my truck up at my place and just into Michigan down this little gravel road back in the sticks I found a trail labeled by the county something along the lines of a grouse hiking trail. Once spring/summer arrives I'm looking forward to hiking it. So many interesting places to explore up there. I was up a couple weeks ago to see another foot and a half of snow had fallen. Was telling my friend about your cabin adventures in the winter describing to her you go 3 Miles in to get to your cabin. Just curious what is the most snow you have had to go through to get to your cabin and did you ever feel like you wouldn't make it in? That has to be a scary feeling getting half way in or so and worrying if you can make it to the cabin.

I think about hip deep was a high amount decades ago. We got to the cabin and turned around after starting the fire and went back out 3 miles for another load. I question why we were in such a hurry.

Martin, I love these interludes in the Northwoods; they are so different from my Sierra Nevada mountains here at 4,200 feet but in many ways so alike. What satellite device do you use to send messages back to your Chery Pie Queen? I'm thinking of getting something like that because at 75 hiking alone, it may be nice to signal a friend if I get in a bind with a bear and no cherry pies to bribe it off me??

I use the Garmin 600 Inreach device. It uses the Iridium satellite system and is the best sound company in that business. I use a $12 per month package and then after 10 texts they are 50 cents each. When I got my 600 the lifetime Birdseys mapping came with it and I have found that to be very useful in my exploring off trail.
