Listen to this man singing El Paso and appreciate how a story, beautifully sung, should be told. Fabulous.

I was lucky enough to see him live. I've never seen anyone with such vitality and charisma. His voice was as good live as on his records. RIP Marty Robins.

My father and his best friend were in the Country Music business. In the early days of their career, George Jones, Buck Owens and Marty Robbins would often be at our house rehearsing and partying. George Jones used to date my Mom's sister. As a young lad, I was peaking at Jones and his band rehearsing in my parents living room. They had a huge party going on. They would play some, laugh, drink, smoke and play more. George Jones caught me spying on them and called me over. He sat me down on a chair put his guitar in my hands, stood behind me and was trying to teach me how to play the guitar. Of course, my hands were too small and it hurt. George was snockered and laughing the whole time. My parents told me, above all, they loved Marty Robbins. At the time, they could see that he was a diamond in the rough. According to my father, they helped Marty quite a bit. Marty was pretty much a mooch and constantly asking my parents for food, mostly money, booze, and transportation somewhere, etc. My parents helped him quite a bit and with no contingencies or expectations. As you know, all three of these guys went on to become big stars. After achieving fame, not a one kept in contact with my parents. They weren't sore or expected anything from these guys. They just took it in stride. Years later, I was attending university in Daytona Beach and Marty Robbins was competing in the Daytona 500. My dad told me to visit with Marty. I got as far as the pits and passed a note to Robbins. He refused to see me. I was a little pissed off but thought him too busy with his car and the up coming race. I tried again but received the same treatment. I told my dad about this and he was very disappointed. For the first time in many years my father made comment about Robbins. He said "We helped carry this guy for quite awhile and at the minimum he could have said hello to you." Some years later, my wife and I went to visit Buck Owens at his Crystal Palace. At that time he was pretty old and in bad shape. I went up to him, introduced myself and he just sat there staring at me. I said "I'm XYZ's son. My dad asked me to stop by and say hello." Mr. Owens replied, "I don't know what you are talking about I don't know any XYZ." It just seems many of these guys / gals who become famous don't want to associate with common folk or those who have helped them. I can somewhat understand. They think everybody is after them for something. Hell, all I wanted to do is say hello. Same with Robbins. At the time, I wasn't into C&W music and wasn't a fan of any of these guys. Their fame meant nothing to me. It was just a social call. Oh by the way, I forgot to tell you. Although this video is complimentary of Robbins, he wasn't well liked among the NASCAR drivers. They thought him reckless and dangerous. To be a proficient competent driver, you have to do this all of the time. You have to practice, etc. Robbins was a part time guy and it showed. When driving he would force his way causing accidents. That's why the guys didn't care for him too much.

He looked like Ed O’Neill (Al Bundy) at around 6:45. He was truly one of the best. Gone way too soon. RIP, Marty Robbins (Sept. 26, 1925-Dec. 8, 1982).

@@nathonics I noticed a couple weeks ago Hal Linden is still alive. I thought he passed away years ago. I remember him as the host of the 1970's tv program Animals, Animals, Animals.
