Final Fantasy 7 Remake Comparison: 2015 vs. 2020

The Final Fantasy 7 Remake has had a pretty long development cycle, first being revealed way back in 2015. So we thought we'd take a look at how the game has evolved from its 2015 PlayStation Experience trailer to what is finally playable here in 2020. Cristián Paris to be fair the watch dogs devs were making their game on PCs when they first revealed them. They hadn’t even had access to console dev kits at the time. They didn’t exactly know what the consoles were going to be working with Whereas Square is super smart, planning this and announcing at the very beginning of a generation, so they had the hardware from day 1

We're in a post-Moore's law era, until other breakthroughs happen that allow us to use an alternative to classical computing chips like silicon we will only see incremental updates in computational hardware and by extent graphics. Now this is made for PS4, which is already a few years old, and so if this was made for high end PC's instead we'd see even better graphics.

@Christopher Yet, that's how it works for Ubi Soft trailers. Watch dogs is a particular case but Far Cry 3 trailer/real game comparison is pretty pathetic as well. They have that bad habit to make another branch of their projects and assign it to a completely different team to pimp up for the trailer, improvements that never end up in the real game. They even go as far as having actors to play the role of the players. At first, I honestly thought that the voice overs in the E3 trailer for The Division were real in game voices. The disappointment was immeasurable.

One thing I did prefer in the 2015 version is @0:55, when Cloud holsters the sword and has that tiny stumble. It really shows how heavy it is, even for a super soldier.

That's really interesting. It's the one thing I absolutely despise down at the very core of my being. And not just in this game but in every game and movie that has the teal color grading. Which is something like 95% of movies and probably 20% of games. I gave up on movies altogether largely because of teal filters.

Honestly, the green tint from the 2015 version was more representative of what Midgar would look like because of the Sector Reactors. They discharged green mako fumes into the air, the glow would stretch for miles, logically giving the areas the same color palette since the mako reactors flanked every corner of Midgar. But... Whatever i guess...

@@Captain-America92 See it's not about that. I love every color, especially since I'm a visual person. The problem is the color grading often favors teal over every other color, dominating the scene and killing the other hues. Magenta is all but gone from movies, and now many games as well. You see mostly cool blue tones and orange/yellow instead of purples and pinks. Unless it's a club scene or a neon cyberpunk world, in which case you see lots of pink and again, teal. But never warm blues, and never warm blue hues in the shadows. It's always that cold blue-green and I probably wouldn't find it that off putting honestly if it wasn't such a dominant color grading that so many movies go for...

@@LD1E60 I think he means in the context of previous footage compared to final product footage. Early footage of DOOM2016 basically looked the same graphically when they showed it off for the first time in 2014 as it did in it's final release of 2016. The only real changes were UI and HUD changes. Thankfully DOOM Eternal looks even better than 2016. iD, Square and Capcom basically own the video game industry right now. Throw CD Project Red in there too since 2077 is coming out in Sept.

Probably worth mentioning the dev team working on this release is a different team than the one that started working on it in 2015, so that's some things changed dramatically visually as it was probably done from scratch, instead of imported from the old team's old build.

Alright people, lets keep this in mind when viewing this video: 2015 Version: Was being worked on with an external studio. Square didn't have the time to fully commit to it, so they got CyberConnect2 - creators of the .hack series - to step in and help out. This version was scrapped literally the day of the announcement. They went ahead with announcing the remake anyways, but - and I don't have the link to it, you'll have to dig around google to find it - they(Square) said in an interview that they did not like the look of the characters and decided to bring it all in house. 2020 version: They spent 5 years to make it look actually like a square game and succeeded. (insert Barret doing a fanfare cover) I think that basically covers the difference. The main point in this comment though is that I see a ton of people commenting saying "thanks for not downgrading!!" which is a little.. Idk, it doesn't seem right exactly since they had to redesign the characters in general, the lighting, music, locations, enemies, etc. Essentially everything got visually better, and I see why you'd say its an upgrade, but I'd say its more of a remake of the remake. lol. That or they just completely scrapped the 2015 version and started from scratch. It feels more like you guys should be saying "Thanks for going with the right decision to bring it back in-house so we can get the game we all want and hope for!" vs the upgrade thing. My opinion. Take it or leave it. Just remember: Square dumped CC2 so they could make the game better than what they showed off at E3 2015. Either way, we get the remake and everyone wins! :)

Most notable change that I can see is the shift from green lighting to blue. Yes, there's been more texture changes and body language enhancements, but switching the lighting color changes the mood in a more general and yet subtle way. The city should have a more flourescent look to its nightlife, which is achieved with blue lighting. Hoping the lighting changes don't hold over even outside of Midgar.

What I really about Cloud Strife is how the character is designed and the way he generally fights with his serious attitude, by using the Buster Sword to attack enemies.

Who else here can't wait for the weapon bosses in the (probably) last part of the remake? Fighting Emerald Weapon underwater with this graphics and battle system must be f***ing intense!!

The atmosphere looks better in the demo but I kinda like the green hue from 2015. Kinda foreshadowing all the mako stuff
