So I took the stairs, because in my mind, it made the most sense. The dialogue was hilarious. My friend took the elevator, so I decided to come here and see the difference. Tbh, it’s nice to see them question the consequences of their actions. Like, Shinra employees just wanna get their Gil and go home to their families. Then again, I guess Tifa forgot that Jessie has parents top side.

You're lucky to be a newcomer. Barret has maybe the best backstory in FF7. If Cloud is the brain and Aerith is the soul of the gang, Barret is definitely the unbreakable Backbone Pillar character. Note that most of the critical lines he says will always encompass the struggle of everyone but his own past firsthand. But that, is something you will learn as the story progresses.

No, Tifa had the right idea. Barret is trying to dehumanize the enemy even though there are many people just trying to do right by life and their families even if the higher ups are rotten to the core. Kinda annoyed that Tifa rolled over for Barret's excuse. This is a war and innocent people are going to die at your hands, live with it.

While I haven't played the game, I got the impression from the stairs and elevator scenes that Shinra at this point hadn't yet realized that they had been infiltrated. The people they did meet wasn't expecting them, but reacted promptly when they saw them.

FYI the reason why Aerith now in custody of Shinra is because she help Marline to get away. also Zack Phantom memories in Cloud after all it Zack strong wish to see Aerith as soon as possible even knowingly facing of thousands of enemy and he died trying (but did he?) if only Cloud and Zack went to hiding and have Cloud recovered first or Place Cloud on a Safe Town like Cosmos Canyon. then go see Aerith alone with out a dead weigh he might have live To see Aerith.
