There's a secondary lesson here as well. Cecil is told that "justice and retribution are but trifling things" as well, indicating that it's not about retribution but stopping Golbez just as a means to stop bad things from happening. In that same moment, Tellah relearns Meteor. Learning Meteor set Tellah on his path of retribution which ultimately leads to his downfall, this solidifying what Kluya was speaking of. It's brilliant and perfectly shows how vengeance can lead to your downfall while at the same time showing that you cannot be passive about evil in the world either. There's always a fine balance to maintain. God I wish they'd remake this but in higher quality, I personally consider it the best out of all the FF series.

Seeking and accepting the truth has always been the primary story of FF4. Tellah was already on the path of retribution before he got Meteor and was only looking for a tool to exact his revenge. Tellah knew what would happen to him if he cast Meteor and wasn't ready to accept the truth and pass away until the burst of light from Cecil's trial gave him the confidence to know that the "kids" he was helping would be able to take over and that he could finally rest. Tellah wanted to go out with one last "bang", which is something a lot of the older characters seem to do now that I think about it. 🧐 And Tellah's quest for retribution did open up the door towards the truth: that Golbez's power over Kain wasn't absolute, which suggested an even more powerful being really pulling the strings which is confirmed after FuSoYa slaps Golbez back to his senses. The tragedy that unfolds before KluYa isn't just the obvious Golbez issue, but of KluYa seeing his own son still a Dark Knight. KluYa wanted Cecil to arrive in different circumstances to pass on his legacy but had to accelerate the process, hence the test. If Cecil truly was at the point where he could fully accept the truth he's known all along, that he is not defined by the armor he wears or the sword he wields, then the burst of power KluYa gives after the fight won't kill him. And that's the real point here: that justice and retribution, fighting for what is deemed "right" by others and for revenge, will never lead Cecil towards the truth of who he is and who he can be and will only further bury the feelings Cecil has. The Mysidian elder even pawned this fools errand off onto Cecil as retribution but quickly accepts the truth when Cecil returns a truly changed person. Even Palom and Porom know what's up after Cecil finishes his trial and attempt to apologize on the spot and reveal they were only originally there to spy on him and report his death back to the elder. On the flip side we have Kain who instead lets his "truth", his unrequited love for Rosa and thus rivalry with Cecil, consume him. While he had all the best intentions in not interfering with Cecil and Rosa's relationship, his truth turned to jealousy and allowed him to be controlled so easily by Golbez/Zemus. FF4 has been my absolute fav FF since I was like 10 and the older and wiser I get the more depth I find in it's storyline.

The moral is to repent of our wicked ways as Jesus went through pains and sorrows to die for us, as He has long been awaiting the day we would turn to him, and our test is if we will be willing to be purified in the fiery furnace in which only gold and silver can survive. Works of wood, hay, and stubble will no longer remain after this temporal realm's time has passed. Man can only achieve works that are filthy rags to a perfect God, but God is satisfied with a humble heart willing to admit wrongdoing and willing to give anything to Him that He requires, with faith in his perfect love.

Even cooler: In-game every enemy you come across leading to this point has high resistance to darkness, so Palom & Porom essentially carry you here. Then you become a paladin, and going down the mountain all of those same enemies are weak to holy skills.

When I played this almost 30 years ago now on my second or later play through, I grinded to level 45. My first grind experience. Made everything easier and loved that over powering feeling. At this scene when I first saw it, I felt those tingles all over my head and made me come back to FF again and again for all these years. Last time I felt those tingles was from those Origa tracks from FFXIII-2. Haven’t played FFXV yet though.

Even with the low Attack compared to later-in-the-game weapons, Deathbringer can still OHKO many enemies. Pretty niche use, but hey, at least it´s better than nothing.

When I was a kid, I thougt you had to beat the Dark Knight. I mean, Cecil literally points his sword at him. But not fighting him makes sense. Cecil can't beat the Dark Knight: he committed terrible sins and must acknowledge his past. Such a good game. Imagine if this game’s plot was like FFXII with Vaan. You’d have the game following Palom’s perspective even though Cecil is still the main character. He’d have 9x the dialogue in this scene, with him giving a pep talk to Cecil that the game implies he wouldn’t have accepted the trial without. And when the trial actually begins, you bet Cecil would invite Protagonist Palom to back him up in his duel with his dark knight self.

To be fair, Vaan didn't have that much dialogue. In fact, one of his main problems was his lack of involvement in the story, only interrupting in some cutscenes to get one or two lines in (which villains will immediately ignore as they focus on actually important characters, mainly Ashe and Basch).

Among Final Fantasy entries, it's challenging. As some said, VI and VII are better starting points. As a version of FFIV, the DS version is the hardest of them all. The original SNES and PSP versions are much more manageable.

It's as many have said, you face the darkness within and don't fight it, because you have to acknowledge your own past darkness. It is a part of who you were, and refuse to use it's base closed fist ways.
