Ah... I've been waiting for someone to do this theme in true 8-Bit... It does not disappoint. I have to admit, I was surprised you managed to get the choir in there, considering the limitations of the Famicom's sound chip. All and all... This sounds really good. Immediately what comes to mind is a little 8-Bit song composed by Matt Creamer/Norrin Radd, called ‘A Barrage of Hostile Abstractions,’ which, like what you did with the choir in this rendition of ‘One Winged Angel,’ does have vocals, and also took an absurd amount of risks by doing so. What I’m trying to say is, this sounds absolutely phenomenal, even speaking as someone who isn’t a fan of Final Fantasy, but really loves how the song sounds. Seriously, incorporating the choir must’ve been an absolute nightmare. I have nothing but great things to say about this. This is outstanding.

@8BitDanooct1
@8BitDanooct1 10 жыл бұрын
this is all running on my NES. it requires a cartridge that can emulate or use the VRC6 expansion chip (in this case the Powerpak), and a small modification to enable expansion channel sounds to be heard (running a resistor between two pins on the expansion port). this can play natively on a famicom if you use any VRC6 cart (Akumajou Densetsu, Esper Dream 2) to play music. try downloading the NSF in the description and opening it in an emulator, it should play the same way.

For all who say this can't fit in a game, I think that if you replace a song from almost any NES game (let's take FF1 for example, and replace the encounter music with this) it could play, if the game is a japanese famicom cart with VRC6 (like Castlevania 3 jp version for example). It wold not be that big of a game (FF1 was 256 kb, and this song is 230 kb). Add some programming to get the song to play and it would be slightly under 512 kb (big, but not unthinkable, as many games, such as FF3 were this size). Correct me if I am wrong though :)

Wait, the voices were possible with the Konami VRC6 expansion chips? That is surprising, so I might do an 8 bit FF7 fan game. Just because, 8 bit expansion chips.

The problem is that digital samples take up a lot of storage space on the cartridge. Cart space was very very very precious, so there's no way they would sacrifice so much just for music quality. (Ever notice how the music and speech on the SNES version of Street Fighter II weren't as good as the arcade version? The SNES was capable of the full quality - they just had to save storage space, so music quality suffered)
