I remember playing Final Fantasy 15 way back in 2016 and thinking "If they remake Final Fantasy 7 they'll basically have to recreate the game world on THIS scale. There is basically no way we are getting that." Final Fantasy 15 was a game that was constantly defeated by its ambition to have the scope of a 1990s/2000s RPG, but the fidelity of a modern open world game. But old school RPGs cut corners with their world design in ways games like Spider-Man/Red Dead Redemption do not. Skies of Arcadia can have that huge map because it wasn't trying to be Black Flag where more stuff is seamless. Something is always going to give when you try to serve two masters like this. Then comes FF7 Remake/Rebirth. And when you consider the fact that they split FF7 Remake into three separate games, my old prediction was still technically correct. It could take us 8 years to get through FF7 because not only is this recreation adding a metric ton of new material, fully rendering all this stuff in 3D that was basically presented to gamers interpretively through map screens & pre-rendered drawings in the '90s is a massive undertaking in and of itself. Part of me feels like FF15 walked to FF7R could run. Another part of me says this is the same situation as FF15 because Square Enix can't actually finish their over ambitious games on release, only now they're sticking you with a "to be continued" rather than scrambling to patch the holes with DLC. I'm still mad we never got all of Dawn of the Future.

Wish you would've said more about the exploration part. You said it's not as "open" as before, but I really want to know to what extent you can and can't explore the world, see certain places even before the story "officially" takes you there, etc. -- this is among the most important aspects of the PSOne era FFs, and it was dropped ever since FFX on PS2.
@Nick9309 ай бұрын
There's about 6 "open world" regions. Grasslands Junon Costa Del Sol Gongaga Jungles Etc Areas like the grasslands are fully explorable but are separated from areas like Junon through hidden loading screens. The cave connecting the two is huge so it makes grasslands and junon feel like totally seperate environments. The original game made it seem like the world map was all one massive environment
@TheSimChannel9 ай бұрын
@@Nick930Oh, you reply! Thanks for clarifying some more :) But it seems that the game has mostly abandoned the feeling of true world exploration then, if it feels like disconnected areas. In the earlier games I loved to be able to see villages, cities and other interesting things from a distance even if there was still, say, a river, mountain chain, or that swamp snake in the way of actually getting there. As well as a lot of areas that were completely optional and where the main story didn't bring you. Going there (early), seeing a world that exists outside of the main story line, that was one of the best parts. After playing Remake I was quite disappointed in the game. Pacing was completely off compared to the original game, and not making it out of Midgar in 60 hours of play time was frustrating, and it seems I should expect more of that frustration from Rebirth (once it makes its way to PC). Based on how the map in this game has tons of gaps and grey space and what the director has said in recent interviews about the Highwind in Part 3 I fully expect them to really focus on making part 3's world map completely cohesive. Maybe that's a dumb thought considering you would think they would get that technology figured out on the first try, but the way he described part 3 really made it sound like they are going to do that, and honestly I kind of think it's a great idea. Really make the Highwinds sense of complete freedom come alive.
@TheJadedJames9 ай бұрын
The Highwind, with no corners cut, feels like it would be an insane technical challenge. Building the entire FF7 map to scale and letting you just fly anywhere? At the very least, I'm expecting some FF15 style invisible walls that stop you from getting close to Midgar.
@crosis29 ай бұрын
The problem kinda is that Square Enix f'ed the whole implementation. I think it's okay to split in 3 parts but at the end it should be one game. Who needs the Highwind now? We have fast travel which replaced most of travel now.
@bricewgilbert9 ай бұрын
@@crosis2 Well if you turn all the areas on the map that are still gray after Rebirth (which is a lot. Even in areas we technically 100%'d) into places only the Highwind can reach then you have a lot of game left that requires manual flight to access instead of fast travel. Islands in the ocean etc. I mean my guess is that they are going to just accept a level of abstraction here like the original. Meaning the planet will be relatively small and you will be able to encircle it just like the original. It will feel a little more realistic than the original in some ways i'm sure, but it will ultimately still require a suspension of disbelief. They tried with Midgar to make you believe you were in a massive city the size of what it would be in our world using a variety of techniques, but you kind of have to throw that out when you get into the open world. In reality the Grasslands would be much more massive, they wouldn't be basically empty, there wouldn't be 6 towns or whatever on the whole planet etc. This is afterall still a video game.

Never played KH so for me i love what they’ve done with the remakes
@jessiejoy1703Ай бұрын
@ BUT BRO SERIOUSLY YOU HAVE NO CLUE HOW LUCKY YOU ARE RIGHT NOW. If you like the remakes you absolutely need to play KH. It really is a must. I’d even say it laid the ground work for these remakes. But sir you have no idea how lucky you are. You get the chance to play KH for the first time. Especially with the final mix of one and two. But unfortunately other than one and two……the rest of the series takes a sharp decline. I still like the chain of memories card deck one. And Birth by Sleep. Both are solid 6 or higher. If you like 1 and 2 obviously. Funniest part about what I’m going to say is that I’m about to reinforce my original point. While the KH storyline is quite good, it is an absolute nightmare of webs weaving all over the place. Including what might be the most convoluted time travel plot, EVER. lol. Sounds kinda familiar right?? lol. However, the ending of this series in KH3 was lackluster at best. At worst down right criminal to the series as a whole, including the side games. I think it’s possible 3 is the worst game of the series. Except DDD, don’t ever play that if you do try these out. Just watch a KZbin recap for the story. Utter garbage of a game. The only reason it isn’t worst than 3 is because of expectations and the significant failure to live up to a 2 generational legendary video game franchise. As a note. They did release a dlc of 3 apparently making massive changes, because 3 really was just so bad the made a whole new game as dlc. It might even be free 😅😅. I have admittedly yet to play it. I plan to tho after Rebirth, then Shadow of the Erdtree. Which btw is another franchise known for the most difficult bosses in modern gaming history. And I perfected them…..I still haven’t beaten the KH2 secret boss ☠️☠️☠️. It’s been awhile, but back then it felt impossible to me. Anyway best of luck friend!! If you try out the series gimme a response if you notice any major comparisons to rebirth.

I get what you're saying, it's not 100% seamless. But the game is already pushing Unreal Engine 4 as it is. It isn't a Rockstar engine. I think for the Next Game since it's going to be even larger they need in Unreal Engine 5. I can't imagine the underwater section and even mountains to still be in the same engine.
@SeveraLF9 ай бұрын
Actually by the end of the game it is completely seamless. Due to the tiny bronco
@awsomeboy3609 ай бұрын
@@SeveraLF It is seamless in the end, however will Unreal Engine 4 HANDLE that?
@Nick9309 ай бұрын
Its absolutely not "completely seamless." Just like the map in tony hawks american wasteland wasnt actually one giant open world. It just loads areas in giant sections with hidden loading transitions that are barely hidden (see the shot i captured of the bronco driving towards junon as a clear example)
@ziontea70458 ай бұрын
Oh it definitely will stay in the same engine. Expect part 3 to also be unreal 4. Game engines are like new cars and the tools you need to work on them. As soon as electric cars became more common place, mechanics needed to relearn basically everything they knew because the systems and methods and tools they used for older cars were not applicable anymore. Same thing for game engines. If they go to unreal 5 they'll have to remake every asset over again from scratch and development will take twice, if not 3 times as long.

Looks the same, what a waste of money. In all honesty FFVII rebirth is without a doubt the single biggest graphical upgrade of any video game in history. To think the original release of FFVII was released 6 years before the invention of ambient occlusion ( 2003 ). I would love it if more studios would be willing to take their classic titles and reimagine them in modern day graphical technology.
